 Sequoia found herself sitting in the playroom a lot lately due to the cold weather. Winter wasn't a time of year she particularly liked or appreciated because of all the plants dying and animals hibernating. Everything was so... Blank in winter, from the snow to the sky. It was a lot like the piece of paper in front of her, white and waiting for a splash of color. The crayon in her claw would help color it in eventually, if only she could keep her eyes off of the gaggle of Imps across the way.
... What was it like to have a history and reason to gather? She couldn't help but wonder. What was it like to know your culture? To have a family? A reason to run home after school every day? Her hand shook and her tail pinned itself between her legs. ... She was so jealous. Why did she have to be part of a race with so little known about them? It hurt!
Finally, she put her crayon to the paper and began drawing. Her motions were emotional at first, almost frenzied, until a smile crossed her cheeks. A long green tail, a pair of floppy ears on the side of her head... A new Sequoia surrounded by a group of Imp friends smiling along with her. ... But it was only a nice thought, wasn't it? Her ears flopped against her head. Just a silly dream, something she'd never have! She balled up the drawing and tossed it behind her, before leaning forward and sighing defeatedly into her sleeve.

 After practically rolling inside the playroom from outside, Jacie popped up and shook the snow from his fur with a shiver. He swatted what snow was left off of his ears. He looked up to see his best friend, coloring viciously. His shoulders dropped in confusion, she was normally a bit more chipper. As he started to walk over to her, she balled up the picture she was working on and off it went.... to his forehead. He leaned down and picked it up, opening it as quietly as possible. He smiled a bit seeing his friend's artwork till he noticed... HE WASN'T THERE! He frowned, looking up to the green furred grimm. He sighed, wanting to comfort her but remembering there was something he had to do first or she'd yell at him again... Oh yeah... Ask permission!
Jacie gripped the paper as he took another step towards her, stopping as he noticed the imps across the room then looking at the picture again. Why did she want to be surrounded by imps? They were sneaky and way less cool compared to grimms. He finished his steps to her, sliding his claw into her and tugging her up. "Come on, Mopey butt!" He smiled to her, tugging her more. "Let's go have fun and play over here. Okay?" He was trying coax her away from the others so he could talk to her.. so he could find out what was wrong.

Sequoia's ears perked up at the sound of snow falling to the floor and leaned up to see Jacie standing next to her. Not that she'd admit it, she was very grateful to see him, even if he proceeded to tug her up from her spot and call her a butt. She pouted but allowed him to tug her away from the others. Hopefully he'd want to sit a chat? She really didn't feel like wrestling today...
"I'm not a butt, Jacie." She quipped, moving to stand closer to him. "... How's the snow? Is it really cold?"
She shifted her feet nervously. Her questions were more of a distraction for herself than anything else. She was still feeling sad from the drawing she'd made...

Jacie's tail swished behind him, disregarding her statement of not being a butt. "It wasn't too bad cause we have fur!" He exclaimed, leaning forward to press his forehead to hers. "What's got you all upset?" He asked in a surprisingly soft tone. He gave her cheek a little nuzzle before sitting down, "How come you want to have a bunch of imp friends?... Did I upset you?" He asked, his eyes drooping a bit. "I-I'm sorry that I wrestle you a lot.." He added, his tail still. He looked up to the other, searching her expression to try and figure out what was upsetting her. Did the imps say something to her?... Couldn't be bullying her... they'd be dead. He scratched the back of his head, "Did the imps bother you? I'll beat them up for you..." He mumbled, not sure what to do.

Sequoia leaned forward as Jacie nuzzled her and slowly sat in front of him. However, his next set of questions sent her arms up into a flail as she shook her head. No, no, it wasn't his fault, it wasn't his fault at all! Where did he get that idea from? ... Maybe she hadn't been nice? Was it rude to say no to wrestling? She had no idea how to be a Grimm! She whimpered and tried to keep herself from crying.
"No, please, don't! They didn't tease me!" She exclaimed, desperately wiping at her eyes. "I just... I just feel like I'm so different, like, it would be so much easier to be an Imp than a Grimm! They know who they are, they have a history and... I don't!"
She heaved in a breath and shoved herself toward him, her head colliding with his shoulder at a force that even she was surprised with.
"It's not your fault, Jacie." She mumbled, shivering. "You're the only other Grimm I know and I don't want you to be upset with me... I'm sorry."

Jacie listened to her, more than just a little surprised by her jealousy. He never really saw that in her before but it didn't bother him, it was a normal feeling. His chest clenched as he saw her tears, frowning till she collided into him. His eyes widened before her wrapped his paws around her and nuzzled her. "That's why you are all upset?" He smiled a bit, "But... Sequoia... I like you just the way you are." He gently pulled her back so he could use his sweater to wipe her tears. "Just because we don't know our history... doesn't mean we are alone. There are lots of other grimm! Remember all those grimms that came with the nixies?... They said they'd teach us our history. But even if they didn't.. You always got me, okay?... You're the only family I have.." He explained to her, looking to her with a smile. "Don't you see... you'll never be alone anymore because you are stuck with me!" He added for reassurance.

Sequoia allowed Jacie to nuzzle her and wipe her face, but really wanted to flop back on him and stay there for a while. She couldn't remember the last time she'd wanted to snuggle up to someone and being this close to Jacie just made her want it even more. However, his words kept her sitting upright as she listened, her ears giving a twitch or two.
... He liked her just the way she was? Her ears piqued. She placed her hands on her lap as he spoke, only for her shoulders to arch slightly. F-family? He considered her his family? Had she heard that correctly? She reached out to hug him.
"A-are you sure? You'd never get sick of me?" She sniffled, her lips twisting. "I... I've never had a family before. I don't know what that's like! What do you do when you have a family?"

Jacie nodded to her, "I'll never get sick of you. I promise." He told her, blushing a bit. "A-And even if we fight or argue.. I'll always forgive you because that's what family does... they forgive, protect and take care of each other no matter what..." He explained, looking down. "I... I have a grandma. My Father imbued me then after a couple weeks he gave me to his mom and I haven't seen him since. My noni took care of me for a while but I guess she got really sick.." He rubbed his neck, "These people came to take me away.. my Noni told me that she loved me and didn't want me to go but it was what was best for me.. That's what family does... They do what's best even if it hurts." He wiped his eyes some, wondering how his grandma was.

Sequoia's ears twitched as Jacie spoke and slowly, she rose to look at him. He had a family before coming to academy? But weren't all Grimm from the cache like she was? Her gut twisted a bit at the thought and she found herself looking away for a moment. Even if his father had left him and his grandmother had sent him to live in the academy, he was still luckier than she was. He'd had someone older to protect them, love them, and rock them to sleep at night. She wanted someone to do that for her so badly...
She lifted her gaze again when he wiped his eyes and quickly used her sleeves to help dry them. Maybe it was wrong for her to be jealous of him, it didn't seem like he was having all the good of a time here either. After all, he was just as lonely as she was, right? She bit her lip.
"I'm sorry they took you away from your Nomi, Jacie." She replied, her lip quivering. "I'm sure she had a good reason to do that... And besides, if she hadn't sent you here... You wouldn't have met me, right?"

Jacie looked up to sequoia with a smile, "Yeah... I'm glad I met you." He told her as he hugged her close, "I just hope she is okay... I miss her... You'd love her! A-And she'd love you too!" He exclaimed, his tail swishing. "Usually around this time of year, we would eat cookies and drink hot coco together and talk about the year." He explained, trying to hide his sadness with a more happy front. "I promise I will make this winter, the first of many best winters... okay?" He nuzzled her again, hoping he successfully cheered her up. If not then he would try harder. He thought of what he could do for the holidays to make his friend be proud to be herself. It was almost as if a light bulb lit above his head... he definitely had a couple ideas! He just had to work with putting it together annnnnnd getting a little head from grown ups! After all, he was just a kid.

Sequoia nuzzled Jacie back and smiled. His Nomi would love her, huh? She didn't know what a grandmother was like, but hot chocolate, cookies, and chatting sounded really nice. Was that a special something you did when you had a family? She shrugged her shoulders and let out a short laugh.
"If you want that, Jacie, then I want that too." She said, wiping at her eyes again. "I hope we can enjoy a lot of winters together, and springs, summers, and autumns... Let's stick together forever!"
She took a breath after speaking and turned her gaze toward a pair of Nightmares holding cookies and steaming mugs. Cookies and milk sounded so good right now... She looked to Jacie.
"... Do you want to go get some hot cocoa and cookies?" She asked.

Jacie liked being close to his best friend, happy that she seemed to cheer up a bit. He meant every word he said to her, every last bit. "I want what you want, Quoia!" He told her, taking her paw in his. "I'll always be there! Forever!" He agreed, feeling all warm and fuzzy on the inside... just happy to be with her.
Jacie didn't notice anyone but Sequoia at that moment... well until she mentioned cookies and coco. His smile brightened, "Sounds delicious!" He told her, gently tugging on her paw to have her follow.... looking back to her with a smile.
