The whooshing sound stuck in his ears for many moments too long. His eyes felt stuck shut – it took him a minute to pry them open. At first, he thought he was blind. It seemed as if everything was gone from his sight. But slowly, he adjusted. Then the whole world seemed sharp, crystal clear – as if he was taking in everything at once. It gave him a headache, the amount of information flooding through his brain. But eventually that settled, as did the ringing in his ears.
Moving his head, he swiveled his neck to glance back at his body, painted like spring daybreak. It was at that moment that he realized he wasn’t sure if it was painted, or if he just looked that way. The thought struck suddenly, hard. He had no recollection. But this must be his true form, right? The stallion fought down the panic that he felt rising, rapidly, alongside the knowledge that he had no name. Digging deeper, he realized he could remember, well, nothing. No name, no family, nothing before the ruckus filling his ears. It was then, just as he was trying to calm himself, that he spotted in the near distance a rather pretty (if plain) mare, grazing peacefully, completely ignorant of the internal ordeal he was going through.
Taking a few deep breaths, the stallion steadied himself. He found his head leveled itself out quite quickly. Was that normal? A trait of his, or some anomaly brought on by the distant presence of the mare? Either way, it was working. His head was clear (whether he wanted it that way or not). The stallion glanced back over to the mare in the distance, quirking his head a bit at the sight of her. Deciding this mare must have some influence, and perhaps knowledge of, well, anything, the stallion decided to trot forward.
“Hello, miss, I-” he started off, having arrived just behind her. He didn’t mean to scare her, but…

Kintori was grazing. It was a beautiful day and she was finally taking time to enjoy her solitude. What with recent events, she knew she needed some time to breathe. And this was what she was doing now – clearing her head, clearing her mind. Letting it all wash over her like the morning sun.
Now, Kintori was grazing. Until a certain stallion glided up behind her and frightened her wits by opening his big, dumb mouth. “What the-” Kintori yelped, whipping around to get a clear view of her attacker. That was when he realized he was not an attacker at all. Despite his rather sizable figure, he looked rather harmless. Although, that might have just been the distant look in his, uh, eye sockets? Which sounded as if it may be creepy, but it shockingly was not. It was a feature that only aided in looking as if he had been dropped from the heavens.
“Who are you?” Kintori hadn’t meant to growl out the question, but her patience with stallions had been rather short as of late. She had little time for their s**t at this point. “And what is it you want?” It was rare for Kintori to come off as snotty, but she had sought out this place specifically for its emptiness and obvious serenity. And this stallion was deliberately destroying the happiness she had sought in this little getaway. So now, she demanded answers. (240)

The stallion was internally as surprised as the mare, but managed to keep his composure. Almost instinctively, he extended one hoof and sunk down low into a bow, glancing up at the fuming mare. “Nefertem, my lady,” he stated, blinking wide as the name escaped his lips. ‘Where did that come from?’ he wondered, a bit jarred at the act; but he knew it must be the correct name. It felt strange, but for some strange reason it felt… right.
Rising back up, Nefertem eyed the mare, a bit alarmed. He was not really the type to really “fight” back, so he wasn’t sure how to handle the idea that the mare may go off on him in any second. For a moment he feared for his life, but almost immediately brushed away that thought. She didn’t seem the type. Although he decided to keep an eye on her, just in case. Even though, he was quite a bit larger than her. Almost twice her size, really... but it wasn't smart to underestimate her. That he knew.
“Truthfully, I am not sure why I am here. I was honestly hoping you could help me with that…” His shoulders made a shrugging motion, not quite sure what to say. “I don’t, ah…” Nefertem chuckled, feeling awkward. “I don’t quite recall anything before, uh… just a few moments ago. I don’t even remember how I got here… I’m guessing you didn’t notice anything?” The stallion gazed hopefully at the mare through messy purple bangs. She had to have some semblance of an answer, right?

The mare was about to answer sarcastically. Why on earth would this stallion, this Nefertem, think she had been paying attention? It was silly, conceited, downright arrogant! That was, until, it began to dawn on Kintori what had happened.
Eyes widening, Kintori stared at the male. There was no way. There was absolutely no way. "Oh my gods," she muttered, shaking her head. This really couldn't be happening. And if it was real? Gods, how they messed up. A stallion? Seriously? What kind of cruel, cosmic joke was this, anyway? A laugh burbled out of her throat as she looked around, head still shaking. It just didn't make sense.
It was then that Kintori's gaze hit Nefertem's and she noticed the downright puzzled look plastered on his face, plain as day. "I honestly don't know what to tell you," she blurted out, still laughing a bit. In all truthfulness, this oddity was calming her down a bit. Serving as a distraction, really, from the gloom of her everyday life. She anticipated the stallion to be nothing but trouble, but already he was doing her good. How ironic. "There's this story I've heard since I was a young foal, about this... this star..." Kintori rolled her eyes, knowing how ridiculous she was about to sound. "This star that grants wishes, y'know? You blab all about your problems and what you really want out of life and, boom, you got it." The shrugging motion he made earlier was mimicked, now, in her own shoulders. "Stories about couples who can't have foals suddenly finding themselves with three baskets, the reunion of long-lost siblings, stuff like that. It's crazy, I know." Kintori's gray eyes gazed at the male, mirroring his disbelief. (287)

As the mare rambled on, Nefertem didn't find himself fighting the urge to laugh. Even though it sounded preposterous, it didn't register as so. A lot of what she was saying felt as his name had felt: right. And even in his mind, that idea sounded ridiculous. But he knew it wasn't.
Listening to her, however, he wasn't quite sure how he fit into it all. What did him sneaking up behind her have to do with all this business with the stars? The tales she was told as a filly and the good fortune of these far off others had little correlation with his presence here and now. Although this mare was pretty, it seemed she didn't have much going on behind the scenes - her brain was all out of whack. Attempting to get her train of thought back on its track, Nefertem chose that moment to interrupt. "This is all very interesting, uh... m'am, but what does this have to do with me?" He cocked his head slightly in an effort to look cute and innocent, an attempt at avoiding getting his head bitten off for cutting in on her estranged monologue.

At Nefertem’s statement, Kintori laughed. No, not laughed – it was more like a maniacal cackle. Of course, she wasn’t getting to the point. She wasn’t getting to the point because it would make her sound, well, crazy. She rolled her eyes, tucking her wings in close to her body to protect her from what would likely be an incredulous reaction. “Well, you see…” she began, sighing with dread.
“I’ve been having a rough time lately. Like, a really rough time.” Kintori figured if the male was who she knew he was, then he wouldn’t mind her complaining. In fact, he was supposed to relish it – that was his job, right? “I’ve come across all kinds of problems and have been feeling rather depressed and lonely and so, I uh, took a chance…” Glancing at his face, the stallion had a brow quirked, urging her on. “I took a chance on those silly old tales. I traveled up to a mountaintop, as close to the wishing star as I could possibly get around here. And I talked. I told them all my troubles and asked them for a friend, anyone to help ease my mind.” Her shoulders made the shrugging motion again, her tail flicking anxiously. “I mean, I have Kintori. She lives around these parts and is a friend to me, I suppose. But it’s more… circumstantial. We wouldn’t be friends if we didn’t live so close together. All I wanted was another mare I could connect with, a mare I could talk to…”
At this point, Kintori looked at Nefertem’s massive body and burst out laughing. “And gods be damned, they sent me a stallion instead. Funny sense of humor they must have.” She scowled for a second, before remembering who she was standing before. Her new best friend, right? Pale cheeks reddened in embarrassment, remembering her earlier speech. “My apologies for earlier. I, uh, like I said, have been in a mood…” The mare stretched out her wings, starting to relax. "My name's Kintori, by the way. Since I refused it to you earlier." She grinned, lighting up her face as bright as the wishing star itself. Hopefully he didn't think she was crazy.

Nefertem listened quietly, attentively. Attempting not to show any indicator of reaction. He felt his tail flick back and forth idly, the most feeling he allowed himself to show. In reality, all of this sounded nuts. Some star in the sky listened to her problems and responded by sending him to fix them? It was laughable at best, and at worst... at worst, he (realistically) should turn tail and run far, far away from this psychotic little mare.
And yet...
And yet, something stopped him. Just like everything else that seemed to be coming back to him, the idea felt familiar. So he found himself shirking the knee-jerk reaction to judge the mare. A combination of that peculiar gut feeling and the sparkling, yet embarrassed look in her eyes had him convinced. At the end of it all, Nefertem nodded towards her blushing face, a crooked smile working its way upon his lips. "No need to be embarrassed. The ever-wise Kintori seems to have discovered my true purpose in life." The grin blossomed fully as he continued, "I exist only to serve you." Once again he bowed to her, keeping eye contact as the grin remained dancing on his lips.
"Now, my dear Kintori, what was this about having a rough time recently?" (213)

Kintori found herself immediately at ease as Nefertem spoke, laughter burbling to the surface. As more and more time passed, she felt her suspicion to be true. He was perfect (well, except the "he" part, but she'd have to excuse the wishing star for that). Everything he said made her feel comfortable, welcome, and valued. It was strange. The relationship she had with Kipenzi was wonderful, yes. But never had she felt so compelled to spill her problems as she did with this relative stranger.
At his inquiry, Kintori found herself recounting everything. The enchanting Helberd, the panic at the baskets, the guilt she'd carried with her since. The meeting of some new stallion who broke her heart and hardened her. It was all waiting at the tip of her tongue to be told to him, her true friend. And this was only the beginning. (145)
