Kipenzi huffed, lifting her head from its resting on the soil and shifting into a sitting position. Once again, Kintori had woken her up with her loud wandering off. The other mare consistently left in the middle of the night in a flurry of sniffles nowadays. Kipenzi was not all that surprised. Although her friend had been in surprisingly great spirits lately, it all of a sudden came crashing down just a few days ago.

Apparently, Kintori had finally met, who she coined, "the stallion of her dreams." A nice, big, handsome stallion whom she had encountered while floundering in the midst of the storm. He sheltered her, flirted with her, and introduced her to the beauty of his herd lands. There had been something there, she insisted over and over. She had been hopeful that she had finally found something... what was the word she used? "Stable?" Kipenzi nearly snorted at the thought. After a few days Kintori finally found him again, only to discover he had met someone else. Well, he had met someone else before he had met Kintori. But he thought it was just a "fling" or whatever. Evidently, after thinking long and hard about his "options" (who was this guy, anyway?), he decided upon sticking to the side of the other mare. Which, honestly, did show some of his character. But leading Kintori on like that (according to her, at least - Kipenzi recognized she was only getting one side of this crazy story) was not the best choice.

With all that Kintori had going on, wrestling with her past decisions and such recently, this was the worst thing that could happen to her. Knowing her duties as default best friend, Kipenzi stuck out her front legs and worked her way up, shaking out her coat once standing. Here goes nothing.

Trotting, she soon found Kintori riverside, staring out at the stars and sniffling. This seemed to be the default, recently. Kipenzi slowed to a walk. Sidling up next to her friend, she sighed and pressed her nose into the mare's neck.

It seemed all too often now that her sleep would end rather abruptly, while the stars still shone high in the sky. She knew it wasn't just about Skaalbjorn. There was a lot on her mind as of recent, and his rejection just seemed to be what pushed her over the edge. It wasn't as if she loved him or anything. But she had felt real possibility with him. All Kintori really desired at this point in her life, with all the grappling she was doing with everything else internally, was some sense of stability. And that rock she had envisioned for herself in Skaal was crushed beneath the hefty hooves of the gods. That had been the last straw.

Jolting away for the umpteenth time, Kintori sighed heavily, feeling her emotions overwhelming her. The tears coming uncontrollably, the mare sniffled, attempting to hold them back. However, she knew it was impossible. Just as returning to sleep would be. So, she heaved herself up, sniffling all the while, and headed out to her favorite spot by the river. It wasn't long before she heard the hoofsteps of her friend, Kipenzi. They weren't really friends by choice, moreso by the fortune of often inhabiting the same land. She was good to her, though, so she could not complain. The other mare slowed and sighed, walking up beside Kintori and pressing her nose into the crest of her neck.

Kintori smiled and laughed nervously, shaking her head. "I'm swearing off boys for good this time, Kenzi. All they do is cause foals and heartache. And neither of those is really worth the trouble, in my opinion. If I never see another stallion again it'll be too soon." Finishing her statement, she leaned into the other mare, sighing softly. She knew she didn't appreciate the other's friendship the way she should, but it was nice. Nice to know she always had someone to run home to in times of need. But often she wondered in Kipenzi had problems of her own. Problems that she kept quiet about, only to selflessly assist Kintori with hers. She quickly knocked the thought, knowing that if Kenzi had an issue she'd be forthright with it. That's what friends did, after all, right?

Kipenzi laughed at her friend's statement. "Oh, Tori, we both know that's a lie. I don't give you half the attention you need to survive - you have to get it somewhere!" She chuckled again, but this time it felt rather empty. Sometimes she feared she would lose Kintori soon. Some handsome stallion, inevitably, would sweep her off her hooves and whisk her away to some glorious, far-off land. And Kipenzi wasn't quite sure what she was to do when that happened. Even though they didn't often discuss Kipenzi's own personal problems, Kintori was wonderful to have around... even if she did disappear pretty often. Plus, the distraction was more than welcome. Particularly now.

The mare resisted every urge to glance down at her stomach. She could almost feel it growing as each moment passed. Some time ago she met a wonderful stallion named Asar (Kintori was right - they really do cause nothing but foals and heartache), and, well... now her tummy was getting bigger. Her friend didn't notice quite yet, of course. She wasn't all that observant, that Kintori. But Kipenzi knew and that was all that matter. She had already told Asar, as he deserved to know. And they were going to raise the foals together, because gods forbid either one of them raise them on their own. But that didn't alleviate her concern one bit. Kipenzi knew damn well that she wasn't mature enough to handle this. She'd heard that birthing the foal (foals?) would end up giving her maternal instincts, but that didn't happen with Kintori, so why on earth would it happen with her?

"Kintori, I uh... have to tell you something." The mare scanned the river, looking at anything but her friend. She knew there was no way she'd take the news well. Not only was she having her own troubles, but foals were pretty much her worst fear at this point. They triggered a depression in Kintori like she'd never known. Therefore, she'd been dreading this moment like no other. But it had to happen some time.

Kintori burst out laughing at the comment. She did know it was near impossible, but she would try. Honestly, her desire to have any contact with stallions had waned to an almost nonexistent point. They were absolutely nothing but trouble, and she was glad to know that now.

Having a heightened sense of emotional discharge, Kintori could feel her friend growing uncomfortable. She chose to ignore it, blaming it on a number of things. The cold air, being up so late when she could be sleeping, having to comfort her again, et cetera. She was honestly quite shocked when Kipenzi spoke up. A slight gasp escaped her mouth and she moved aside to glance at the other mare. Kipenzi wanted to talk about something? Seriously? Taking an audible (possibly all too dramatic) deep breath, Kintori hunkered down, ready to get serious. "You know you can talk to me about anything, Kenz. What's bothering you?" Her mind raced, attempting to think of how Kipenzi spend her free time, but her mind remained black. She didn't really do anything, to her knowledge. As far as she aware, she... existed to comfort her. Kintori's eyes lowered, realizing how terrible of a friend she'd been up until this point. Thankfully, this conversation would hopefully allow her to change. Step up. Really be the best friend she claimed to be.

Taking a dramatic deep breath of her own, Kipenzi glanced over at her friend, then away again. "I haven't known for that long, I swear. But I..." She stumbled over the words, not sure how to phrase anything, but knowing she didn't have time to figure it out now. "I wasn't quite sure how to tell you, because I didn't know how you'd react and I didn't want to upset you but I also know keeping it from you would probably upset you, too, so I..." Kipenzi shuffled her hooves, moving further away from the other mare. She took a few more quick, deep breaths to steady herself, calm her nerves. Seeing the pleading eyes of the other mare, she looked towards the ground. "I'm pregnant," she finally murmured, almost inaudibly.

The gold and white mare struggled to imagine what made this other mare trip over her word vomit. She almost butt in to inquire what it was she was rambling on about, but Kintori realized that would probably be considered rude. It was clear that her friend was having trouble with this, and she deserved Kintori's undivided attention and support, not interruptions. When she finally spat it out, Kintori barely heard it.

"What is it? I'm sorry, I-" she cut herself off as her ears and brain finally processed what it was Kipenzi said. "I'm pregnant." The female blanched. Surely, she was hearing wrong. There was no way Kipenzi could be so stupid, so dumb as to fool around with stallions when Kintori so clearly demonstrated the dangers they posed. Kintori stared at the mare, awaiting an explanation until she realized that she very clearly wasn't getting one. The wobbling gaze and fallen ears of the other showed it very clearly: she wasn't lying. She was pregnant.

"Oh, oh gods..." Kintori herself felt unsteady, uneasy, sickened. But this wasn't about her. 'You're not pregnant. Get your s**t together.' More deep breaths. More steadying. Faking a smile, Kintori peered over at her friend. "Kipenzi? Honestly, that's wonderful. You know you're going to make the most spectacular mother." Soon enough, the smile faded into a real one. "For gods' sake, look at how you mother me, constantly!" She laughed, moving over to the other mare, clearly having forgotten her own problems and reservations in the area. This wasn't about her - this was about Kipenzi. And she needed to feel special and cared about, for once.

Kipenzi's nap nearly snapped from the rapid way it whirled around to stare at her friend. She was... happy? Although it was evident that Kintori's knee-jerk reaction was not so great, she overall seemed to be taking the news quite well. She seemed excited, honestly. How strange. But Kipenzi was not slightly hesitant about accepting the mare's congratulatory tone. Kintori was even making jokes about how great of a mother she would be. The knot in her stomach unfurled and Kipenzi offered up a smile. A great mother? She wasn't so sure about that, but it eased her nerves slightly to hear her friend so positively encourage her.

"Thank you, Kintori. This..." she looked up at the other mare, grinning now. "This honestly means a lot, you have no idea." Kipenzi chuckled, nuzzling into the mare. There was really nothing better than having friends by your side in times of need. And although she was certain Asar and her would do a great job raising the foal (or foals, gods forbid), it was nice to hear it from someone else. This made her all the more thankful for such a great friend like Kintori.

Although Kintori still had her reservations, she did feel positively about Kipenzi's soon-to-be-motherhood. All of her reservations pushed aside, this could be a blessing. Hell, perhaps she would let Kintori help with the foals a bit. Maybe it would make up for her past transgressions - raising a foal made up for abandoning three, right? Wrong, but it was a nice thought. Plus, she had never really liked foals in the first place, but not for any particular reason, maybe they weren't so bad. Now was as good of a time as ever to figure all of that out. And it would definitely make for a great distraction from the Skaal issue, that was for sure. Kintori grinned back at her friend, enjoying this time together. What more could she be thankful for that friends like this?
