Mahogany Sunset Ismae plodded along, dragging her tentacle behind her. It sucked instinctively at the ground, twinging every once in a while when it ran over a sharp rock. The appendage was no stranger to wounds, as it was more delicate than its owner and wandered wherever she did. Just now it left a shiny little trail of mucus behind on the packed trail, as though a very large slug had passed through the area. Phail Ninja Sunshine stared up at the sky, letting the breeze gently tousle her translucent mane. She couldn't believe just how quiet it was. All her life she'd been surrounded by the cacophony of the carousel, crowds chattering away and music blaring at all hours of the day. Even when they'd been travelling it was never quiet, always the clatter of wheels on rubble and the whispers of her herdmates flowing around her. But now she was alone, and the silence was almost eerie. Or was she? Her ear swivelled to one side, just picking up the clunk of hoof on rock. Was someone approaching? Mahogany Sunset Strange, glowing, grenadine eyes focused on the translucent figure in front of them, yards away. Ismae's next step hesitated only a moment as she made a decision, somewhere in her subconscious mind, between continuing forward and going back. But her hoof hit the ground before her, and the next step took her forward, as well. To an outside observer, Ismae might be ambling right up to the mare in front of her, but Ismae simply followed the path of least resistance. Phail Ninja A bizarre looking mare approached her, coming closer and closer without saying a single word. Strange appearances did not phase Sunshine, after all the night guard had often looked rather… sinister to those not from the herd, and they had been some of her closest friends. But even so the tail dragging behind her caught her eye, seeing the light glinting off the slight trail of slime. Excitement gripped her chest, someone else was here, she wasn’t completely alone in this vast, terrifyingly quiet land. Greetings at least, were a simple matter for Sunshine. She had greeted countless guests throughout her life. It was a well-rehearsed routine. A pleasant smile crossed her features as she sunk into a low bow, arching her neck gently with respect. “Greetings, traveller.” Mahogany Sunset Ismae did not stop when the mare smiled at her, nor did she stop when she bowed. She did not even stop when a greeting was spoken. Instead, her footsteps slowed, gradually bringing her to a halt. When she at last stood still, she was nearly nose to nose with the other mare. Her button-shaped eyes took in the mare's pale ones, her pale mane, pale everything, all translucent, like a beam of light crafted into the form of a soquili. Unblinking, she stared at the mare, the only response to the greeting a flick of her ears. Phail Ninja Sunshine rose from her bow only to find herself almost nose-to-nose with the mare. Her glowing eyes seemed to bore down into her, infiltrating her with their light. Sunshine’s own gaze danced with a pink hue, reflecting the stranger’s from their close proximity, bright shadows swirling across her orbs. It should have been terrifying, having someone so close. But Sunshine sensed no hostility. No fear. Not really… anything. So she held her ground, her smile not wavering. Her ears perked forwards as she gently stretched her muzzle out, touching her nose to the stranger’s own. Maybe she would understand that greeting better.

Mahogany Sunset The warm, gentle touch of skin and fur to her nose made Ismae flinch slightly, but not out of fear or anger or hurt; her bundle of instincts flared to life for a moment before settling again, and her nose came back to rest against the other mare's. She stood very still, except for her tentacle, which crawled heavily forward along the ground. When she was more lucid, if she ever had been so lucid, sometimes she thought that it had more sentience than the rest of her body and mind combined. Slowly and as non-threateningly as it could, the tentacle wrapped gently around the other mare's ankle, the light hold easily breakable if she wished to get out of it. Phail Ninja Though the mare flinched initially, Sunshine felt her soft nose touch her own once more. A true smile broke across her face. It had been a while since she met someone. She wasn’t loud and rowdy like most of her herdmates, in fact she appeared to be quite the opposite, as quiet and still as the lands around her, but she was someone, right there, with her. Sunshine’s eyes flickered downwards, noticing what looked like stitches across the mare’s mouth. Could she talk at all? She wasn’t sure, but in that moment it didn’t seem to matter in the least. “I’m Sunshine.”
She felt a cold spot touch her leg and stiffened in surprise, before realising what it was. Cool mucus coated her ankle as the tentacle slowly wrapped her, its touch gentle. It was almost… a greeting? The sensation was strange, although not entirely unpleasant. She stayed still, not breaking the contact.
Mahogany Sunset The tentacle's grip lessened even more when it felt Sunshine freeze, then settled more cozily around her ankle when she seemed to relax more. Ismae's mouth opened the tiniest fraction before closing again. It had been so long since she had spoken, since she had done more than breathe, walk, and eat. It took her a few moments to remember how to put out sound, how to slide air over the vocal cords in her throat. "Issssmaaae," she whispered, her voice stretching from so little use. If she had spoken any louder, it would have sounded like a croak, raspy and halting. Phail Ninja The mare’s name was almost a whisper, barely an audible sound. But it was there. Sunshine’s ears swivelled in surprise, but excitement ran up and down her spine, leaving pleasant chills along each vertebra. Ismae. Her voice sounded thin, hardly used. When was the last time this soul had encountered someone else? But here she was now, making an effort to communicate. Sunshine couldn’t help but grin. She had been one of the herd’s best greeters, luring in all sorts of Soq to come and see their festivities. But she had no such intention here, she wasn’t doing her job, she just wanted someone to be with in the moment here and now. Although she felt like bouncing around, she kept herself still, not wanting to break the tenuous contact between them. She feared that if she did the mare would continue onwards, ambling away from her as steadily as she had arrived. “Ismae. It’s an absolute pleasure to meet you.” Her voice was level and calm, but her eyes with afire with joy. Mahogany Sunset Ismae blinked slowly, the pink light of her eyes shining dimly through her eyelids. Smokey mist still seeped out from beneath her lashes, clinging to them and her mane. The mare was so bright, catching the sunlight, that she saw an afterimage of her behind her lids. Her tentacle told her that the mare would still be there when she opened her eyes, but even so, she felt a jolt of something when Sunshine disappeared behind her eyelids. Disappointment, or panic maybe? She did not know; it had been too long since she had felt it to identify it. She opened her eyes more quickly than she had closed them, desperate for that half a heartbeat of unpleasantness to go away.
The mare was still there when she opened her eyes again; her tentacle had not lied, doubting of it though she might have been. Her insubstantial thoughts paused for a moment as she processed the thud of her heart, faster than normal. She had not run; indeed, she had stopped altogether. She had not held her breath and been stressed for it. And some strange, pleasant feeling was seeping into her muscles and her gut.
Relief?
Discomfited, Ismae shifted, her back feet shuffling a little. "Fffffeeeeliiiiingsss," she murmured, shifting her weight uneasily from side to side.

Phail Ninja Sunshine watched Ismae’s face carefully as the mare closed her eyes, tracing her features with her gentle, glowing gaze. She was such a strange creature, her fur was soft but dark, almost glowing with faint pink highlights. And her eyes, even when closed, seeped with colour, soft wisps dancing across her cheeks. Her gaze flickered down to the stitches once more. They crisscrossed across not just her mouth, but down her neck and across each flank. Had someone done that to her? Or had she been born like that, much like herself with her strange transparent glow? Ismae’s eyes fluttered back open, and Sunshine thought she saw alarm flash through them for a moment. Had she starred too much? Was she making Ismae uncomfortable? But the tentacle remained wrapped around her, lending her comfort and support. Maybe it wasn’t her. She watched carefully, ready to apologise if need be. But instead Ismae rocked back slightly, one more word escaping her. Feelings. Sunshine’s smile crept back in, her moment of worry calmed. When was the last time Ismae had come across someone else? Maybe she was feeling just as relieved, just as happy, as Sunshine felt then? After all, she didn’t think anyone really liked being alone… Feelings, yes. She knew feelings. The sorrow of losing her herdmates, the eeriness of the silent landscape, the calm of meeting someone else. “Feelings, yes.” She echoed, unable to keep the corners of her lips from turning upwards. Mahogany Sunset "Whaaaaat..." Her word trailed off almost in a sigh-like sound, her tentacle tightening ever so slightly around Sunshine's ankle, seeking comfort. Something in Ismae felt hollow, at a loss. Her ears flicked back and almost pinned at the unfamiliarity of it all. The stitches around her mouth tightened and loosened as she worked her jaw, struggling for the words and struggling to get them out. "..arrrrrrre theeeeeey....?" Phail Ninja Sunshine paused, almost stumped by the question. How could you describe feelings? “Feelings are like… Hmm…” She frowned slightly in concentration, her brows coming closer as she puzzled out the words. “When something good happens, maybe you meet someone you like, or you find your favourite food, and your body feels like its glowing. Not like my body glows, but like everything is bright and warm inside you. Deep inside, like your heart feels light and everything is just… nice. That’s feeling happy. Then you get bad feelings. Like when your throat just closes up, your stomach starts jumping about, you start shaking and you just want to run and hide and everything is big and taunting and your heart starts beating like you’ve been running for a hundred miles. That’s fear. Or… sadness. When your body is hollow and empty, when you feel like something is missing inside you and its like this darkness creeps into your brain. Everything is grey and your limbs are heavy and you can barely move…” Her frown eased up, forehead relaxing as she felt satisfied to word her emotions. “Like right now, I am happy. I was alone and the quiet was drowning me, but then you came and now everything is bouncy and warm and it… just makes everything seem good.” Mahogany Sunset "Haaaappyyyy," echoed Ismae, her toneless voice continuing in its hissing way, though she had spoken more words than she had... Since she could remember existing. She wasn't sure how long that was. Her mouth stretched around the P sound, the stitches pulling a little in her skin. "Whyyyyy aaaaloooone...?" Phail Ninja Why was she alone? Sunshine momentarily stiffened at the question before settling herself back down. “My herd they… they stopped being a herd.” She considered going more in depth, telling her about their past, their flight from the skinwalkers darkening every action, but the words just wouldn’t come out. All her life it had been a closely guarded secret – the façade of being an entertainment group when really they were on the run. Of course, they had entertained too, but every action the herd took had always been menaced by the skinwalkers. They had been a recurrent theme in every decision, every movement they made. And it was hard to give up secrets like that. “We found… a home, after wandering for a long time, and everyone went in different ways. So now I am alone.” But the mare didn’t want to stand there, dwelling on her past. With a curious tone she deftly tried to steer the topic away from herself “How come you’re on your own?” Mahogany Sunset Ismae followed where Sunshine led, blindly following the turn in the conversation. Something wriggled uncomfortably in her gut, her breath heightening in her lungs. She had always been alone, always, the soul inside her not quite right for this maimed body, not quite right for any body. The tentacle was the only thing that was hers. "Aaaaalwaaayssss aaalooone..." Phail Ninja Always alone? What an awful way to live. Sunshine felt her heart go out to Ismae. She’d only been feeling empty for the last bit of her life, but her whole life? That was almost unimaginable. She pushed her muzzle forwards again, nosing the mare gently. “Not always. Not right now.” Mahogany Sunset The renewed warmth against the end of her nose calmed the creepy feelings in her gut, and Ismae's uneasy shifting at the strange emotions that caused such physical reactions in her body stilled. She exhaled more easily, and her heart felt as though it were beginning to slow. "Nnnoooot aaalooone nooow..." she agreed. Phail Ninja Sunshine gave her a confident smile, her body almost glowing brighter with each millimeter that her grin stretched further. Ismae seemed much more relaxed now, and that made her happy. Her heart fluttered about lightly in her chest, its beat a gentle whisper. And yet... something about the thought of being alone forever crept back into Sunshine's mind. It seemed like such a terrifying concept, never having anyone. What would she have been like if she hadn't grown up surrounding by her boisterous herd mates? The words just seemed to bubble out of her. "What was it like?" Mahogany Sunset Feel free to either tag me on AIM or in here~ You're 23 words away from stats for the month XD I'll edit it into this post if you decide to reply over AIM <3

Whatever thoughts had been suspended in Ismae's mind all at once seemed to freeze and fall away. What... what had it been like? She remembered nothing, not how she had gotten here or how long she had existed. She vaguely remembered sceneries different from this one. The one foremost in her mind had been made up of trees, far too many trees and sticks for her tentacle's liking. More distant was simple whiteness and the feeling of being stiff, and being too cold to remember what warmth felt like. Even further back in her mind was her earliest memory, of earth so fine it jumped when one kicked it, of a roaring blue expanse with a foaming white mouth. Where had that been? Ismae tried to find words again, but this time, none really came. "Blaaaaank..."
