He sat, his bloodshot eyes wide and open, looking around at the table around him. He didn't know almost any of the phonies there, other than, of course, Holier Than Thou, the spirit medium. Tale of her experience and prowess talking to the dead was beyond famous, so much so that Thriller was surprised he was able to be a part of one of her seances on such short notice.

He wasn't the only colt there, even! To Thriller's surprise, he spied a familiar yellow colt across the table--Sandlot Bambino, their pee-wee league's star hitter. A fellow spiritualist? Thriller was enthralled.

Holier Than Thou was not nearly as enthralled as Thriller. She sniffed haughtily.

"If there are to be babbens present," she said in her drawling voice. "I am to be most discommoded. You do not know the toll my work takes on my nerves, and who knows if they will even come tonight, for such low-paying peasantry."

"I'm quite sure that the babbens will be quiet," pressed Truther, another attendee, his shifty eyes moving from Thriller to Bambino. "Won't you?"

Thriller nodded with excitement. "Won't do a thing to stop the ghosts coming," he promised.

"I never saw a silent babben," moaned Holier Than Thou. "Not even when I was one. Other than myself, of course. I always conducted myself with the utmost decorum, you know."

Thriller couldn't imagine that she'd ever been a babben. Or, like, less than eighty--but, despite what Holier Than Thou professed, Thriller kept a lid on his own thoughts.

He was trying hard not to look nervous, he obviously had a reputation as the cool guy to uphold, but auuuugh ghosts wigged him out. Why did he decide to do this again? Curiosity? Probably wasn’t the best thing to risk his butt for.

“Yeah yeah, we’ll be quiet. Mouths shut tight.” He said following after Thriller. He had seen him around but they never really spoke. The colt was definitely the type you would see at a ghost hunt…he was probably not afraid at all. Lucky dude.

Bambino huffed and looked back at Holier Than Thou. She was so….old. From his spot at the table he would probably count all the wrinkles on her face. Wrinkles were like rings on a tree that told you how old someone was and with a lllll the wrinkles on her face she must of been really really really REALLY old.

Oh wait…could she hear him? Or could she only hear ghosts? She wasn’t a psychic so…maybe not? But Bambino quickly tried to concentrate on something else just to be safe.

Holier Than Thou seemed mildly placated by their replies. She turned her face toward Truther and exhaled loudly through her nose. Whether she could hear Bambino or not didn't seem obvious; she seemed sour regardless do whether she knew what he was thinking or not.

"Turn down the lamp," she commanded imperiously, holding up a silk-covered hoof. A gong sounded in the background and the lights went low. Thriller felt a surge of electricity up his back in anticipation of what was next. Would a ghost truly appear? Would it come out of her nose while she breathed out?

He wanted to make a noise, but he knew that was not allowed. He watched her carefully instead.

"OHHHHHHHH great spirits," she moaned. "We come in peace to gain some insight into your being. Come to me, Holier Than Thou, the incandescent bridge of your arrival. Come, spirits."

Even for Thriller, lover of all things dramatic and spooky, this was starting to be a bit much.

"COMMMMMEEEE, Spirits!" Howled Holier than Thou. The wind outside the windows seemed to pick up, rattling the windowpanes. A cool breeze hummed through the room, lifting the hairs on Thriller's neck.

"Even though two brats are in attendance, we welcome you," said the medium. Thriller squinted at her. What was her DEAL?

Bambino’s eyes grew wide when the lights dimmed. He scanned the room for any frightening ghouls but so far so good. And honestly even though he was afraid, Holier Than Thou’s performance certainly made his fears lessen just a tad. At the rate she was going the old broad truly belonged on stage. Maybe he could talk with his mother about a new opening act? Course he doubted his mother would ever share the stage…

Soon as the wind picked up and whirled into the room Bambino had to stop himself from whimpering. Alright, that brought his attention back to the thoughts of scary ghosts. It was so cold! Shivers ran down his spine but what if it was actually a ghost touching his back? Was that possible?

Bambino inhaled deeply and looked over to see how Thriller was doing. He looked…not all that scared. The colt looked more like he was trying to figure out if their psychic was real or not.

The comment towards the two of them brought on a great big eye roll. Come on…they hadn’t said a word. Old lady needed to just chill out…unless…was it possible she could get possessed?! Maybe that’s why she was such a grump? A spirit of malice could be hanging over her....

"If you are here, spirits… knock twice," said Holier Than Thou, her voice hushed. For a long moment, nothing happened, and Thriller wondered why. He looked at the medium, his eye catching Bambino's as he did so. Poor guy looked positively pale. Thriller wondered at it. Bambino seemed like a nice enough guy, and certainly a great athlete. Why be afraid of something that couldn't really touch you?

Suddenly, surprised even Thriller, there was a slow thud that seemed to reverberate all around them. Just as it quieted, another followed. He started, looking over his shoulder at the window outside. Nothing there, right? No horrible see-through faces.

Bambino’s hooves knocked against the table when he jumped at the terrible sound. Oh jeez! Something was happening and he did not like it one bit. Thankfully he didn’t say anything but this was pretty freaky. How would you even deal with a ghost? They didn’t have the GhostBuster phonies here to help them…And it’s not like he brought his trusty bat, and even then that probably wouldn’t work because it would go right through the spectral.

The colt tried to focus on something else to keep himself calm so he started to count backwards but it was hard to shake the feeling that something was watching them. Augh…what was he to do? Bambino was becoming more and more nervous and being a loud individual it was only a matter of time before his big mouth opened up.

Holier Than Thou opened one eye as she heard something clack on the table, but she quickly closed it once more. She opened her mouth, allowing herself to make some strange noises following up with: "ohhhHhhHhhhh! I feel you in the room! Are you here?!"

A gust of wind blew open the window at the side of the room, clattering the pane against the wall. Thriller jumped--it took all his self control not to make a peep at that!

It was happening!!! It was HAPPENING!!!! Bambino's eyes could not get any bigger as he stared at the window as it sprang open. Any moment now some kind of creature from beyond the grave was going to creep in and steal his soul! He hadn't even used enough of his soul to begin with. Hopefully the old bat was strong enough to fend off whatever was coming. Her face could scare a normal phony away so if they were lucky it was good enough to work against ghosts too.

By now it took everything in him not to scream. Still...No matter how tightly sealed his mouth was, there was no way he could stop the high pitched squeal that wiggled out. Hopefully no one could hear his pitiful sound against the rest of the noise the ghoul was making. Maybe he could just blame the wind as a big gust of it blew against their faces. And the sound of his chair scraping against the wooden floor as he trembled on top of it? Just an act of nature...totally the wind blowing against him.

Bambino took another deep breath and shut his eyes as tightly as he could. It had to be over soon. All he had to do was make it through this, see the ghost, and then he'd have a great story to tell the team when he got back. Just a little bit longer...he could do it...maybe.

It was over sooner than Bambino expected. His squeal snapped open the eyes of Holier Than Thou, who immediately glared around the table. All the noises at the window ceased, and she unceremoniously dropped the hooves of those who were completing her circle.

"WHAT WAS THAT?" she screeched. "That was not from the other world. That was a BABBEN NOISE."

She peered around the table, her eyes narrowed angrily. Thriller thought at any moment her hair might explode into flames, she seemed to furious, and her face was white. She looked just as bad as any creature returning from the crypt.

"Which one of you tiny little babbens made that noise, HM?" she spat. "Which one of you scaredy-kitten chicken little babbens cried out at my seance, offending the spirits? WHICH ONE?"

She looked from Thriller to Bambino, looking like she might bite the head off of whomever spoke. Thriller looked at Bambino. He was the star athlete at school! Thriller himself almost made a noise, but Bambino HAD, and well--he couldn't put his reputation at stake. Besides, maybe the old lady wouldn't eat his own head. His eyes looked like he might have hay fever and his hair was floating.

"It was me!" piped up Thriller, his voice a little shaky. "I got scared. It was me."

Holier than Thou turned furiously at Thriller. "WHY, YOU LITTLE--" she started, but then, with an imperious look around the table, decided to handle things a different way. She cleared her throat and pointed to the door. "Get out, you mangy vermin," she said, cold. "Pack your things and LEAVE."

Uh oh…. A real noise…He hadn’t kept it in his head and it was not as quiet as Bambino thought. For an old bat the psychic’s hearing was way too good! Now he was in for it. All that struggle to stay quiet and shut was for naught.

The wrath of Holier Than Thou was upon them and there was no where to run. The ghosts had fled but Bambino wasn’t invisible…he could fly but like a bug the old mare would probably swat him down. How could he have been so stupid? Why couldn’t he keep his trap closed for just a little bit longer? Why did he have to make a sound right then?

He was already afraid of the ghosts, but the way Holier Than Thou was looking at them would make old phonies his next fear. She looked like her head was about to turn all the way around, pop off, and fly at them.

It wasn’t his fault that ghosts were so sensitive. If anything they should grow a backbone and not let a little squeal scare them off.

Before Bambino could admit his defeat, Thriller spoke up…for him.

The little ball player stared at his classmate in shock and awe. Why was he throwing himself on the grenade? Thriller hadn’t made a sound at all! It wasn’t his fault and Bambino knew that the other colt shouldn’t take the blame for his mistake.

“WAIT!”

All the screaming volume Bambino had saved up during this traumatizing seance finally broke free as he flew up from his seat. He looked to Thriller with a little smile before turning his sights on Holier Than Thou. “Thriller didn’t make the noise. I did! He was just trying to help.”

And now it was Bambino’s turn to help him. The truth had to be said. “I’ll leave. He’s supposed to stay. He shouldn’t be punished for my mistake. He was quiet the whole time and really was looking forward to this.” Bambino didn’t want to mess that up for the other phony. He could see from the moment they sat down Thriller was excited for all the spooky ghosts. If Thriller took the fall for him, Bambino would never be able to feel good about himself again.

Holier than Thou started, but she glared down at the other pony with her lip curled and her eyes narrowed. Another stupid child! And the two stupid children were attempting to be noble? Who knew who really screamed… "it doesn't matter," she said at last. "You are both unworthy to see my gift."

She finished with a haughty sniff. "Both of you would have screamed eventually."

Thriller frowned. Well, that was just a load of poop, he thought, bristling. He could feel the back of his neck getting hot, and he narrowed his eyes mightily at the old... old... CHARLATAN! "You know what?" He said. "We are both leaving. Cause you're not-- you're not-- you're not nearly as cool as I thought! You're really mean! Come on, Bambino."

He shuffled off his chair and clomped angrily toward the door.

Bambino hoped that maybe it would all work out like a Saturday Morning Cartoon. Thriller stood up for him, he stood up for Thriller, and Holier Than Thou will be touched by their actions and let them stay…maybe even a really nice ghost would show up.

Or….she could kick them out either way…which is exactly what the old bag decided to do.

Bambino scowled in dismay and glanced over at Thriller. The colt didn’t seem as upset as Bambino thought he would be. Huh.

“Yeah! No wonder only nasty ghosts come here! All the cool ones want to stay away from you!” He fluttered his wings and flew after Thriller. “I wasn’t even that scared anyways! All a grand show that you got to see. You’re welcome!” Aw yeah, that would show her.

"That's right!" Thriller called back, in support of Bambino. He wanted to make a vile gesture at the old bird, but ... well, he didn't know how. Instead, he just stalked angrily out and slammed the door behind him.

Then he stuck his head back in, glaring at all the dumbstruck guests. "AND THAT SLAM WASN'T A GHOST, YOU FAKER!"

And he slammed it shut again.
