User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Friends were hard to come by. Wallflower never had it in her to approach most other foals, and when she manged to wiggle her way into a group, her shyness and awkward air made her a target for teasing. But beggars couldn't be choosers. Any friends was better than no friends, and besides, everyone laughed when they made fun of her, obviously they were having fun. Only a bad friend would stomp on that fun.

The main offender was the leader of the group, a little filly named Mean Grill. She was also the one who often kept Wallflower the closest. After all, who else would carry her things, or pass off "do you like me?" notes to cute foals for her. Obviously they were the best of besties, one pair of matching bracelets away from ultimate friend status. So when her BFF asked her for a super special favor, there was no possible way she could say no, right?

Sneaking out late at night was nerve-wracking, the anxiety from possibly getting caught had her checking over her shoulder at every shadow. She very nearly jumped out of her skin when her friends hopped out of the bushes to 'surprise' her. Wallflower hated sneaking around like this, but at least her job was easy. She was the lookout, tasked with standing out in the cold and alerting the group if anyone returned to the bakery they had snuck into. She didn't like it, but it was okay to do things she didn't like for her friends. Right?

The quiet, midnight hours were always the best for grabbing a late night snack. Just Desserts was in the kitchen, prowling around in the fridge looking for something sweet to satisfy him when he heard a noise. There was a creaking of the front door and the ever so light shutting of it moments later. 'What was going on?' he asked himself.

Putting down a slice of cake, JD sighed, knowing he must investigate the issue. "I'll be back for you, don't think about going anywhere!" he cooed to the cake. The little green haired earth phony tip-toed to the door. Everything seemed normal, no intruders... but perhaps evidence was on the other side. Opening the door, he peered out through the crack. Nothing. Stepping out, he went for a better look. Still everything seemed to be in place. Perhaps it was just an imaginary sound.

About to turn and go back inside, something a little more than a block away caught his eye. The body of a small blue bab and familiar cotton candy hair briefly caught the light of a lamp post. Was that Wallflower? What was she doing out of bed? Just Desserts had to know, so as silently as he could himself, he started to trail her and what seemed like a gaggle of other young girls.

From a distance he watched the group of girls pick the lock of a bakery and disappear inside it; all but one when in. His sister was left out in the cold, for who knows what. This was a moral outrage!

JD popping out from around the corner, marched toward his sister and confronted her. "Just what do you think you and your friends are doing here missy?"

Well it wasn't exactly an adult returning to catch them red handed, instead it got to be her brother. Her brother who took pride in his sense of justice, and he had just caught her with more than just a hoof in the cookie jar. Close, but also a million times worse all at once. She rather get caught for a million and a half household infractions than what he'd caught her doing.

Wallflower didn't want to go to babby jail! She was a good pony really! She brushed her teeth three times a day and she even took the blame that one time another foal accidentally puked in the teacher's handbag. Panic was overriding logic and without really thinking she smooshed a hoof over her brother's mouth as if that would stem the tide of the monumental trouble she was about to be in.

"Shhhh! I'm sorry for sneaking out, I really am. I'll apologize a million times over when I get home. Really- Really- Really! But you have to go. If the others see you then they'll be mad at me for screwing up." Maybe that shouldn't be the biggest thing she was worried about. It was actually one of the many big things she was worried about. She worried a lot. But if her friends found out she was a no-good lookout, then they might just ditch her. She couldn't let that happen.

As his sister's hoof went over his mouth, he fell silent. The colt just stood there, listening to her sister's tale and his heart sank. She was just so desperate to 'fit in' she wasn't really seeing how awful what they were doing was. Internally, he sighed; this was clearly a job for 'big' brother to help her see the light.

He pushed her hoof back, "okay, okay, I'll be quiet." He whispered lightly to appease her. "I'm not going anywhere without you though. Don't you know that this is wrong? Your friends are B&E-ing, that's like.. 10 years at least. So a- that's a crime and b- they left you out here alone? Yeah, sounds like som' real good buddies you got there." Okay, so he wasn't really sure how long of a prison sentence that would be, or really even if babs got sent to prison, but what he knew for sure was this was no good at all.

It wasn't a matter of whether or not this was right or wrong. She had tried justifying it in her mind, excusing their actions, rationalizing. But ultimately it was wrong. What they were doing was bad and maybe they were right in saying nobody would get hurt, but that didn't suddenly make things okay.

Wallflower stared down at her hooves, knocking a rock back and forth between them.

"There was no B-ing. Just E-ing... if that's worth anything." Slowly she sunk to the ground, tucking her head safely under her hooves. "I know it's wrong. And I don't want to go to jail! Really! I just... if I stop letting them boss me around then I'll have no friends." It was a weak justification, for sure. But it was all she had. They were all she had. Being all alone was worse than the trouble she was courting.

SO 90s PSA response

"If you keep letting people boss you around, you might just go to jail!" Just Desserts was stern. He had a strong sense of morality, and the laws were there for a reason. "I guess.. it there was no breaking, that might be a lighter sentence. But really, if you knew it was wrong, why'd you go along with it?"

Placing a hoof on his sister's back, he tried to calm her down. "I... I won't rat you out to the police or security or whatever. I couldn't let them cart away my sister. " JD sighted deeply, "I might be your brother, but I can be your friend too? Sides, if Mean Grill only bosses you around and make you do stuff for her, I don't really think she's a real friend at all."

Next he's going to tell her not to do drugs

"You can't go to jail for being a doormat." She mumbled from under a hoof. Their father and mother likely could never hope to manage the same level of parental sternness that Just had mastered. She half expected him to pull out a 'I'm not mad, just disappointed' on her.

Just Deserts had the strongest sense of morality that Wallflower had ever known. He knew what was right and what was wrong and followed that regardless of whether or not he could get caught. She admired that. And she understood fully what it likely meant to him to keep quiet about her wrong doing.

"Thank you... for everything. But... I don't want you to be my friend just because we're family and you have to."

"You can go to jail, if you just let people do things they want and those things are illegal, that makes you uh.. " Damn, what was that word? Just Desserts had to pause to think. "An accessory, and not the shiny pretty."

The brother sighed as the girl stumbled on her words, suggesting that it was only for pity or duty that he was ever kind to her. "Don't be silly, Wallfie. It's my brotherly duty to look out for you, but hanging out? I'll do that just for fun. Fun should actually be fun, not nerve-racking like this." He half-smiled, trying to lighten the mood.

Wallflower stared at her brother's hooves as the seconds ticked by. His hooves were far less intimidating than his face. Most everyone's were. But maybe, maybe it would be fine. After all, it was Just her brother. Her dumb, snoopy, wonderful brother.

Nope, his face was awful, it was too warm and welcoming and she could feel tears welling in the corners of her eyes. Holding up a hoof in front of his mouth did a lot for putting a pin in the waterworks. "I really hate it when you're right." She sniffed back her tears as she spared one last glance toward the bakery.

"I think... I'm ready to go home now."

Maybe one end post and we are done?

"Excellent, you can show me one of your plants when we get back, if you like too. Maybe dig into of some of mom's doughnuts. " JD was about to lead the way home, before he remembered those silly ninny fillies. He was tempted to call the cops on them... but instead he thought it best to let them make an escape before anything awful happened.

Just Desserts put his hooves near his mouth to try and funnel sound. Then he did his best impression of a siren wail. Anyone one old enough would know better, but maybe it was enough to spook the girls out before they headed home.

Now seems like a good stopping point

"No takebacks." Looking at his face was easier this time. Less emotional nightmare and more her big dumb caring brother who she loved. Leaning up against him was all the comfort she could ask for, like using a wall when one's knees felt weak. Strong and there to keep her on her feet. And perfect to subject to a very long tour of the plants slowly taking over her bedroom. Like she said, he wasn't getting out of this.

The two of them were out of the way, no way for panicked foals darting out of the bakery would catch them. They were too busy running from phantom sirens to even wonder where wallflower went. JD was right, if it didn't even occur to them that they might be leaving her behind, these were not friends she wanted. She had enough right here.
