At the designated meeting place, Lutrin waited with bated breath in the treetops. Very soon her so-called accomplice would arrive, unwitting and unaware. Alas for her. She thought that this would be a simple foraging game, but nothing ever so simple. She would arrive to find the glade empty. Where, she would wonder, could her dear friend be? Maybe she was running late. Yes, that seemed right. She knew she would arrive soon though. Lutrin would never fail her. In the meantime she would busy herself. Perhaps rest on the old tree stump. Sketch a little. And as she pulled out a pad of paper and a pencil, she would have no idea the danger that lay in wait... in the treetops... with bated breath... Lutrin!
Waiting was hard however.
After several minutes, Lutrin's impatience won out and she repositioned herself from a predatory crouch, to a more comfortable, upright, sitting position. Dangling her legs off the branch, she hoisted up her sack from beside her and plopped it into her lap. Aside from two round lumps, it draped across her like a blanket. Thrusting a hand inside, she retrieved a caramel apple and one of the lumps disappeared. She held it up to the moonlight admiringly. Then, as she sank her teeth into the artificial sugary flesh...
Squeak.
“Because it's a surprise,” Lutrin said, talking around the cube of fruit in her mouth. Admittedly, her response sounded a lot less like words and more like garbled nonsense, due to the way the caramel made her teeth stick, but SugarDad seemed to understand anyway. “And everyone needs a surprise every once in a while! Oops!” The second time she spoke, she almost lost her mouthful. She swallowed hurriedly.
Perching on a branch across from her, SugarDad looked uncertain. He was about to protest, Lutrin just knew it. She dove once more into the bag. “Oh, look Dad! I got this for you!” She held out a large candied walnut. It glittered with saccharine goodness. Taking it, SugarDad thanked her for her thoughtfulness.
Lutrin nodded, and catching a glimpse of movement across the clearing, pressed a finger to her lips. “Better be quiet though! Someone's coming!” Giggling, she stuffed another bite of apple in her mouth.
Down below, all seemed quiet and ordinary. There was no sign of another troll about, except for the flurry of chewed apple bits raining down from the canopy amidst the sound of muffled laughter.
