I have been wondering did anyone read the memoirs of a geisha ? Or read the book ? Did you know the author of the book never ever went to japan and he based the book on a real geishas life and just added few stuff to interest the readers and such?

I don't think that this topic belongs in Movie and Television subforum.
I read Memoirs of a Geisha. I absolutely LOVED it!!!
And did you know that Arthur Golden DID go to Japan. Actually, he LIVED in Japan for a while. He became inspired when he met a man who was the son of a Geisha. He also interviewed one of Japan's number one geisha, Mineko Iwasaki, to get a sense of how a real geisha lived. It is true that it is partly based on her life, and he added things that never happened and such... but that's the point. It's considered a fiction novel....and fiction is not absolute fact. Authors twist some of the truth in order to create a story they feel will be more appealing.

I loved the book. ...The movie..was okay. v.v meh. I was disappointed. Filming it in english was just a rediculous thing to do. Why even have Asian actors? Why not just set the story in America? Why call them Geisha? mad And yeah...Arthur dearest had been to Japan and knew what he was talking about. Most of the storyline was fiction. It would have been pretty amazing if that were a true story. ^^

I loved the book... really shouldn't have gone to watch the movie, but i did.. it was way too long...disappointed by it... the way it was shot was incredible..artsy... but even that dragged on... so by the time me and my friends stumbled out of the cinema...it was early hours in the morning and we just wasted a few hours of our precious night.
book was brilliant though.

Otasa I liked the movie, but everyone keeps saying the book is better they ay "it makes you understand the movie more" or something like that. Well anyone who reads a book before seeing its movie version is going to feel like the movie was rushing the story. I guess some of the things that happened don't make sense if you don't know about Japan and geisha so the book would explain those things when the movie can't.

I loved both the book and the movie. It's a great story ... I honestly thought it was nonfiction ... I felt so fooled! XD
But I was impressed that Chinese actresses pulled it off pretty well.
