JANARIM (pl. Janarii) - These large, scaled creatures are vicious with piercing teeth and clawed feet. While speed is not their strong suit, they will move in packs of 3-5 to corner their prey, using their strength and spiked tails to take down their food. Bred in Oba for war, they are almost impossible to tame in the wild.

Sanele lay on a tree branch and watched the herd of quhar carefully. She’d been stalking this one janarim and her pup for a while. The mother was a lot less maternal than the others she’d seen. Often leaving the child alone.. except she always noticed if anything approached. Not a lot of mommy skills but by On’os was she over protective!

I wonder if I should pray to a god to help me, she thought wryly as she watched the hoard of slow moving herd beasts meander around her tree and towards the large oasis nearby. Stuck in a tree… she could try to drop down, but with the janarim (and she’d seen several hunters out there) about that would be a death wish. A stampede of Quhar was something she could do nothing to avoid or escape. Ot one of this size! Best I stay up here and observe, she thought as her sharp red eyes spotted a pack of janarim cresting a hill and making no move to hide themselves…

Or I can try to capture my own Quhar for dinner; the thought was fast and her eyes began to scan the herd for a weak one. A small one, young but not protected by a mother. Her actions mirrored the janarims; or at least the hidden smaller faster hunters that were starting to creep forward themselves. The larger males upon the hill were making a racquet, roaring and snarling as the magesticlly challenged the Quhar. They are smart, she realized; she’d known… but not really known before. They thought and planned and acted as a group. Eiso is right; what I use against an earthling ought to work against them and to train them I bet I just use the same tactics as a Xaraan! For this pack mentality was one she knew; she used it to her advantage when she was training and helping out on the farm. She’d always thought they were solitary warriors; lone and proud. Not to self; she thought to herself; do not target a packs cub. If one mother is bad… the entire group will be worse!

But her thoughts were stopped as the pack charged, and the quhar did two things; half stampeded and the other half turned to meet the janarim. She watched wide eyed; quhar can... fight? Today was a day of mind expansion. She pulled out her whip and looked at it; this was not a hunting weapon. I need to get a better knife or something, she thought wryly as she realized this. Guess I am sitting this one out!

Her tree shook and she cursed out loud as she grabbed a branch and hauled herself further up. Below a young janarim had decided a stationary smaller target in the tree was better than the running quhar.

Sanele found herself pulling her small knife out in one hand and her whip in the other; she was in a situation she’d done everything she could to not be in for the past two weeks! But she was not a coward; while the only fights she’d done were in alley ways and street fights, she wasn’t useless. She snarled back and cracked her whip at its nose as it clawed its way into her tree. It growled and tried to advance except any paw that was put forward was hit with her whip. Normally she never cracked it at full strength; the point was to make a loud noise to startle the creature into obeying not to hurt it! But today it was to hurt it. Each crack broke through the sound of stampeding quhar and the sounds of animal snarls; loud and startling. The quhar made a wide birth about that tree as there was a janarim and loud sounds coming from it. Eventually the janarim whimpered and dropped down, creeping away to sit elsewhere and lick its smarting paws. By this time most of the quhar had left, but the janarim hunters had claimed a few of them with only some wounds to their hunters who’d had part of the herd turn upon them. Sanele took this time to drop down and dash away herself, running with some quhar until she was far enough away she doubled back and left to find her teacher. He was bound to be near… her heart beat and adrenaline still pumped through her; her fear of fighting a janarim was lessened… she knew she could do it now.
