JANARIM (pl. Janarii) - These large, scaled creatures are vicious with piercing teeth and clawed feet. While speed is not their strong suit, they will move in packs of 3-5 to corner their prey, using their strength and spiked tails to take down their food. Bred in Oba for war, they are almost impossible to tame in the wild.

“Today, we will capture a janarim.” Sanele’s spoon dropped into her bowl as she stared across the morning’s fire at her teacher.

“What?”

He grinned, white teeth startlingly bright against his dark bronze skin. “Capture. Janarim. Need I simplify it more?”
She glared at him. “I get that…. But you haven’t even taught me how to!”

He merely laughed; “Oh but I have! You can stalk a janarim now without making it wary. You know their habits.. well the ones about here anyways.” He chuckled again. “What else do you need? I do not spoon feed children… I merely allow young adults to learn at their own pace! If you think you cannot do it.. than you will not.”
“Thinking I ca do something and actually doing it are two different things!”

“But you do not even believe you can?”

“Of course I ca---” She stopped and glared at him. “Jerk.” He always did this; always used her own confidence against her.. but these were janarim! Not her Xaraan!

“And stop using your xaraan as an excuse.” Eishtah laughed again. “You always think ‘ they are janarim, not xaraan! It won’t work!’” He shook his head. “Foolish girl. Xaraan are beasts. Janarim are beasts. Earthlings are beasts to an extent. What works with one will often work with another. We cannot talk to true beasts… but do not some earthlings not listen no matter what? Traps can be used against many types of creatures… you just have to tweak it to fit the landscape and the temperament of the animal.”

Snaele nodded, slightly chastised. She did prefer her xaraan and perhaps she did put herself down before she could do it…

“Did you not do everything you could to become a racer and get that job upon the farm? Where is that drive and determination now? Have you become complacent since you got your foot in the door? Silly girl.” Eiso chuckled as he grabbed his gear and left.

She sat nad stared out into the desert after he’d left. He had a point… she was getting complacent wasn’t she? Simply taking things as they came instead of pushing and jumping at each chance. She growled and put the fire out.

“Guard the camp czar.” She told her perzi who merely flicked his tail at her from where he was curled up. She left in the same direction as Eiso; this was part of what he did. He’d leave and she had to follow him somehow. IF she managed then she’d find that days lesson. Today apparently was for capturing… And Sanele wanted a cub. Who cares about large janarim caught wild? Sure it would be a large feather in her cap… but it was stupid for one such as her. Start small then go for it.

How to do it… separate the mother from her cubs somehow… That was the issue. And then, even worse, avoid being tracked down by the mother and attacked at night. But she would do it. No more saying she couldn’t; she would! One way or another!

That day was a series of failures and moments of panic followed by running for her life. For the most part she was able to separate the mother rather easily; you just had to wait till she was hunting! But the cub would always give her away, crying when it noticed her. Sometimes the cub would attack, Sanele’s ankle burned from where one had managed to get a good grip on her. That had been a painful trail! All the while she felt Eiso’s eyes upon her and everyone and then heard his cackling laughter… Oh how she wanted to punch him right now!

Back at camp she realized it had been two weeks.. two instead of the one she was supposed to be out here for! But she shrugged and didn’t mention it; she was here to learn and she wasn’t going to leave until she learned. To admit defeat was not in her and she wasn’t giving in! She’d prove she could do this!
She’d need to return within a month though as racing season was going to start soon… but she trusted her uncle to get Simba ready.
