The sound of breaking glass had been tremendous, but Mistral arrived on the scene too late. The youma was already long gone, a trail of rapidly-drying caustic ooze in its wake, and that meant it was someone else's problem. She wasn't about to go running off after something that was probably already three blocks away.

"Alright," she said, patting her dog's head. "What happened here."

The youma looked like it had burst through the pastry case, ransacked the bakery, and then burst out through the front window. Mistral considered the trail of ooze.

Caramel.

"Runaway baked good," she said, bemused. "That's a new one."

And then she realized she had company - there was another squire signature nearby, probably attracted by the same sound that had drawn her attention. Mistral tuned. "Oh," she said awkwardly to Falias. "Hi."

It had been the start of a September when Falias had last seen Sarras, the day clear still clear in the Earth Squire's mind despite over a year having passed since the occasion.

Then again given what the two of them had been doing it would have been hard to forget.

He hadn't seen the Cosmos Squire since that night, although after his meeting with Hvergelmir at the start of May, Falias had done his best to keep an eye out for the blue and red-haired Squire.

He had even tried to send a few of messages via his knight ring.

The first had been in June, after he had witnessed the corruption of a Saturn Squire and the last had been just a few scant weeks ago. The result had been the same however - silence.

He knew that there could be reasons for the silence - after all as he had told Hvergelmir it wasn't as if he and Sarras were friends and even at the time of meeting the Cosmos Knight it had already been three quarters of a year give or take since he had last encountered Sarras - but as time continued to pass with no sign of the other, Falias couldn't help but find himself starting to worry. Even if he also knew that Sarras would be the last person to actually appreciate it.

Perhaps that was why he was still continuing to try and keep an eye out for the other on those nights like tonight when he hit the patrol beat.

The ping of the youma aura was almost a relief in its distraction from his thoughts and Falias moved to try and track it down with a bit more enthusiasm than usual.

By the time that he stumbled on the bakery with the busted window however, it appeared that the youma had either already been taken care of or that it was long gone - he hoping for the former - and there was a fellow Squire there, perhaps like him drawn by the aura.

She turned at that moment and Falias kind of wished that she hadn't, because it was something of an understatement to say that Mistral of Mercury was not exactly his favourite person.

"It's you" and whilst his own response wasn't venomous, it wasn't particularly enthusiastic either.

Mistral nodded. How observant of him - it was, in fact, her. "Yep," said Mistral, glancing up the street, her eyes following the trail of slime. That, she thought, was someone else's problem, but saying so in front of Falias might make her sound callous, and she already had a lackluster reputation with him.

She made a little flourish with her hands, kind of a taa-daa gesture. "It's me," she confirmed. Little old absolutely not homicidal Mistral. She bit her lip and slipped a hand around Mendel's collar.

"Judging from the mess," she said, "My money's on a sinnamon roll."

She paused, realizing that joke only worked in text.

"With an S," Mistral explained. "It's a pun. An evil cinnamon roll."

Falias had lapsed into silence after his, self-admittedly, not particular stellar conversation opening choice of acknowledging Mistral's presence.

He wasn't particularly sure how to follow up because truth be told she was kind of the last person he'd been expecting to run into.

For what felt like a moment after Mistral spoke, the silence dragged along in one long awkward pause.

Until Mistral broke it again.

"Huh?" His green eyes gave her a startled look at the sudden topic shift. "Sinnamon?"

Although perhaps Falias should have waited, since after a few moments she was explaining "Oh right because of that" he pointed at the slime trail, wondering if he was the only one who thought that this was kind of stilted.

Even if the pun hadn't been half bad.

He glanced down to where her hand was resting on a dog collar, noticing the dog by her side for the first time "You patrol with a dog?" And despite the awkwardness, there was honest curiosity in his voice.

Mistral gave her dog a sidelong glance and tried to think of something witty to say, but nothing came to her. "Yeah," she said. "I get tired easily?" She'd always tried to be sort of vague about her health with other knights, because it was none of their business. "He watches out for me. Knows how to go get help if I collapse. We try to avoid Negaversers - I'm no good in a fight, and he's sort of distinctive."

Which was to say he was ugly: some kind of big merle mutt with uneven fur, heavy on the pitbull, with mismatched eyes - one brown, one pale, ghostly blue.

"You can call him Dog," she added, "It's kind of like a secret identity."

She bit her lip.

"So how've you been?" she asked awkwardly. "Doing okay?"

Distinctive was kind of putting it mildly given that the dog was never going to win any awards for 'cute' given that it was one ugly-looking bruiser of a dog.

Falias couldn't help but think that it fit.

"Ok," whilst he wasn't sure he got the whole dog needing a secret identity thing, Mistral's dog was pretty distinctive looking
and that was even without taking into account the mismatched eyes. Besides it wasn't as if it was really any of his business what she wanted to call the dog.

He shrugged at her question "Pretty much the same" he said and if one discounted the fact that he'd been trying to track down Sarras with a distinct lack of success then it was pretty much true.

"Apart from tonight it seems like it's been pretty quiet" he hesitated for a moment after the stilted words and then because having the elephant stampeding around them was really feeling uncomfortable added "You know Sarras and I gave Old Man Pluto" an awkward pause "I mean Ankh of Pluto's things back to his widow like he asked. We did it last year - back in September."

Mistral shook her head - she hadn't known that. "That was good of you," she said. All of the deaths at her wonder stung the same, but Falias's good deed brought Ankh's to the forefront. Mistral half-hoped she could have been there, because maybe it would have brought her some closure... but it probably wouldn't have been a good idea. Let Sarras and Falias find their peace - Cosmos knew they deserved it more than she did.

"How did... how did that go?" she asked. Well, she hoped for their sake. Had Ankh's wife known about his life as a knight? Had she understood what cause he'd died for?

Mistral sucked in a shuddering breath. It still hurt. A year and a half later, it still hurt.

"I met the new Mycenae," she said softly.

Falias was silent for a long few moments as he remembered the moment that Ankh's Carolyn had seen the wedding ring. Remembered how her face had drained of colour and how his voice had cracked as he had told her how her Ankh - her Harry - had said to tell her that he loved her very much.

He remembered also Sarras' outburst and the crumpled figure of Ankh's Carolyn clutching on to the wedding ring as he had apologised for something that could not be apologised for - because no amount of apologies would bring her husband back.

"It went" he said at last.

He had avoided that part of the city like crazy for a long, long while but eventually had ended up in the neighbourhood as Marlin on something unrelated and had found that the place had been put up for sale and the at the time once beautifully weeded front garden looking forlorn and overgrown.

"It went" he repeated and then found himself staring at Mistral, his green eyes a mixture of emotions at the mentioned name.

It went.

Mistral nodded. He didn't need to say anything else - she could see in his eyes exactly how it had gone. "I'm sorry," she said softly, "that you had to do that. Thank you."

She knew her apologies wound up sounding hollow a lot of the time. It was hard to do the things she'd done and not have your apologies sound awful and empty. There was no taking back the horrors she'd inflicted on Sarras and Falias and, well, everyone... but if she went down this path, she'd spend the rest of her life apologizing.

And she couldn't have that.

"Thank you," she repeated, flattening her hands against her skirt, "for going above and beyond the call of duty."

You're a better knight than me, she thought.

"It wasn't just me" the four words came out sharper than Falias had meant them to and for a moment he looked away from Mistral awkwardly.

"It wasn't just me" it came out less sharp second time round and was followed by a quiet sigh "And besides it was a promise."

It wasn't but it had been Ankh's last request, so he figured it was close enough.

He finally looked back at her "You said there was a new Menae" a brief moment of awkward hesitation "I mean Mycenae?" And it seemed that he had been listening as his voice made it a question.

"Yeah," said Mistral, feeling a bit dry-mouthed all of a sudden. "A relative of some kind. I guess if any of us die, our knighthood passes to whoever's next in line." She wasn't sure who that would be in her family - she was an only child from a long line of only children. Someone on the Derouen side, maybe, hijacked from the Babylon inheritance--

Not that it was a particularly enjoyable subject to think about, so she resolved not to.

"This is awkward," she said, adjusting her grip on her dog's leash. "I - I'm gonna go, if you don't need anything else from me."

"I don't need anything" Falias said as Mistral called it on the awkwardness. "Although I should probably get going too."

He absently stuck his hands in his pockets as he turned, a part of him acknowledging that despite his words he really didn't have much to do. It was better than making awkward conversation though.

Although despite it Mistral had left him with things to think on, because whilst he knew that Daithi had called him his descendent, Falias hadn't really thought on the implications. Although he found himself thinking on them as he turned with a last awkward nod and started walking off as he wondered for one long moment who the knighthood would pass to, if anything ever happened to him.

Mistral nodded. "Right, seeyah," she said, but he'd already turned and walked away.

God.

Could she be any more awkward?
