Joy was back. Joy was happy to be back. Joy was back and as she climbed down the steps to the basment dorms, it struck her that she now had a ******** of paperwork to do. Oh God, Joy suddenly wished she wasn't back. Things were a lot more quiet on the off-island base. Quiet and somewhat boring but with the glorious bonus of no ******** paperwork.
Her partner wasn't giving her any sympathy though. He may have made one or two suggestions for his bonded to get to work on her paperwork while still off-island. But given how he tended to ignore her probing questions, she ignored his good advice to spite him. So he was feeling mildly smug, in that unspoken way one radiated I told you so.
Perhaps that's why she was too distracted to realize why "My key doesn't work. Puki ng ina, who the ******** changed my bedroom's lock!?"_ p a o cx I am so sorry, pao, Joy can be kinda dumb

Rhys was just getting back from an afternoon session on the training grounds, so he was drenched in sweat and ready for a shower before heading over for a torturous and boring bout serving pod room duty until dinner. Whoever and whatever he passed got, at best, a nod out of him; at worst, a grunt without so much as a passing glance. That is until he came to the basement dorms and he saw someone ahead, standing in front of a door they were clearly unable to open.
Visitor, maybe, from one of the upper floors? He didn't recognize her.
His leisurely pace quickened slightly until he came to the woman and the door in question and he looked at the dorm number that was clearly indicated, then at the woman. Then again at the dorm number, and again at the woman. And then he cleared his throat.
"And you are...?"

Apart form No pain, no gain, Joy lived her life by the saying if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Some might call it hardworking or dedicated or even determined. But really Joy was just stubborn and never quite knew when to call it quits. So instead of pulling the key out of the lock and taking a step back to assess her situation, Joy continued to stare at the offending knob as opposed to the number painted on the door.
She didn't even look up when someone asked her who she was. "Locked outta my dorm," she answered with a grunt while jiggling the handle fruitlessly. "I'm not in the way am I?"

Rhys leaned against the wall, facing her with his arms crossed. The brunette could only watch her for a moment longer, slight irritation morphing into hints of amusement as she continued to persist against the lock that he knew her key would never open. He probably shouldn't encourage it, but he wanted to see if she would give up sooner rather than later.
"You sure you got the right key, there?" he asked, looking at her curiously. He wasn't sure he could play "innocent" very well, knowing that the only key that would work on that door was currently in his possession (though he didn't doubt that management had a copy of their own for emergency purposes), but he was hoping she would buy it.
"That's happened to me sometimes, not paying attention and getting details wrong." He shrugged. "Human error type thing."

The suggestion that she was using the wrong key gave Joy pause. She finally looked up from knob to give the other trainee what she could only describe as the Bert-face minus the unibrow, the huge honker, and all that yellow felt. Slowly, she withdrew the aforementioned security item and held it out to him, "Dude, I only got the one key and it's for my dorm here in the basement. Bee Thirty One," she said, then with the same deliberate movement she pointed to the door.
And its number. Which apparently was, "Bee Thirty Two." she read. Cue awkward pause.

His eyes flitted to the key she held out to him for a second, then to the hand went to the door's number, at which point he grinned as he watched it dawn on her that she was at the wrong door.
"Room B32, aka my dorm," he said as he pushed off from the wall. Swiftly he pulled out his key--the proper key--and easily unlocked and opened the door. "Name's Rhys, by the way. You're welcome to come in, take a look around. I've got nothin' to hide." With a grin he walked past her and headed for the dresser to grab some clothes for that shower he was planning on taking.

Joy's lips pursed tightly as she debated between wordlessly just walking away as if none of this had ever happened or acknowledging that yes, this did totally happen and then threaten the guy into pretending none of this ever happened. Fortunately, he made the choice for her.
"Joy," she said, taking a step back to give way to him. Whatever feeling of embarrassment she might have felt was easily forgotten when he invited her in. She had to admit, she was curious to see how he might have decorated his place. She certainly needed ideas in making her room feel more lived in.
"And sure!" She didn't even hesitate in walking past the threshold, "What sort of things would you have to hide, though?" she asked casually._ p a o cx It's totally fine, I am worse @ 3@

His room was more organized than one would assume. The boxes from its old use as a storage room were piled up and arranged to make makeshift walls and a small table-and-two-chairs arrangement. It wasn't anything fancy, obviously, but it was better than just having a giant pile of boxes in the corner not being useful.
Rhys rifled through his dresser while he shrugged at her question. "Everyone has secrets," he said in a matter-of-fact tone. "At least, I bet everyone on this island does. Even you."

Joy's hands were on her hips, "Oh really? Whatcha wanna bet and what kind of secrets do you think I got?" she grinned in challenge, "Dumb embarrassing s**t like not realizing I was trying to get into the wrong room does not count."

"Yeah, really," he said, clothes in hand as he turned to face her again. The hands-on-hip thing didn't really put him off, it was more her tone. And that grin. "I don't bet on things I'll obviously lose," he snorted back. "Given that I know nothing about you."
He dropped the clothes on his desk and took his necklace off, then his jacket, to start getting ready for that shower. "No one came here just for shits and giggles though, and I doubt any of 'em would willingly share it with a stranger. That's secret enough to me."
He gave a shrug. "I don't actually care. I'm just sayin'."

"E 'di wow" Joy muttered beneath her breath at Rhys' statement of not really caring before shrugging, "Okidoks then, I'll leave you to your room. But if you need help with s**t like cleaning up or some other chore, feel free to call me. I'm always game for stuff."
A beat.
"Except boring a** duties like Pod watching or doing paperwork."

For a second he wasn't sure about one or two words that she said; foreign language, maybe? Not that it mattered much; it seemed like she was leaving so it was probably some word for "bye" or something. Once he was down to just his shirt, jeans, and sandals, he grabbed the pile of clean clothes again and nodded toward the door just as she offered to help him out with stuff.
"I'll probably take you up on that," he said as he started to walk her out. "Cleaning or boring a** duties or any of it. We're all in the same boat; least it'd be easier to get s**t done with someone I kinda know."
Rhys glanced over his shoulder to make sure nothing outside of the pile of gross clothes on his desk--he'd shove them in his hamper later. It all seemed alright so he turned to her then, gesturing for her to step out first. "It'd be better if you were up for sparring now and again, though. Easy to get a hold of you since you're right next door and all."

Joy brightened at the suggestion of sparring, "Uy, hell yeah, I'm down for sparring! My weapon's kinduva weirdo. Like it wanted to be one thing then another but went in the middle and, well, it's weird."
The moon trainee felt a tinge of indignation at her description. But she didn't think it mattered. If her weapon refused to engage with her despite being literally in her head, Bert was going to have to deal.
"Eniwei, when your sched is open and stuff, lemme know. Oh! You can text me too," she realized, bringing out her phone._ p a o cx If you've hit the word count, lemme know and we can wrap up so I can set up that spar OvOb

"Wicked," he replied as he pulled out his own phone. "As for the weapon thing, mine's just pissy pretty much all the time. Not much else I can complain about her, though." Rhys gave a shrug then nodded toward the stairs.
"I really gotta grab that shower. I'll hit you up for that spar at some point. Count on it."Huni Pi All good here. We can close with this post or your next one, either works for me. On to sparring! :>
