The coffee machine.

That was bound to have a few Hunters around it. Specifically ones she needed to find. That was how it worked, right? Just like college: The more advanced you were, the more coffee you drank, the more you depended on the beverage to even open your eyes. By that logic, the Hunters around the fabled machine were more likely to be Full Hunters. That was where she waited.

Lo and behold, she didn't have to wait long to spot someone near them. A luckily male someone. Even better.

"Hello!" She said sweetly, almost literally popping up behind him. "Excuse me, are you busy? Can I ask you something?"

God, in a Christian (or any other official religion) sense, did not exist for Wilson. His only God was Coffee, the Prophet being whoever had discovered that boiling coffee beans had been an excellent idea. As much as he liked sweets, Wilson was quickly growing fond of this dark drink. In fact, he was pretty sure he was drinking coffee like he breathed air, but his body didn’t seem to react badly to it so he just headed toward the coffee machine for another cup (or two, maybe three, four?)

He ran a hand down his face, but at least he looked a smidge less-tired compared to his usual. This was a plus for whoever decided to nyoom behind him. “Hngh?” Wilson made a sound as he briefly looked behind him. Once he realized it was a foreign face, he went back to making a cup of coffee. “Hnn.”

Very talkative today, it seemed.

When his only response was incoherent grunting, Hattie let out a small, excited keen. She found one. A full hunter. On her first try! He had to be. There were many other indications to suggest this of course, but the most imminent and important was the coffee bit. Hattie had decided in that moment that she was an absolute genius.

"Oh. Oops. Sorry. You know? Have some coffee first. Wake up a bit first!" She even scurried over to a nearby table and took a seat, folding her hands on its surface and leaning forward with an eager smile. If nothing else screamed Trainee, that was probably it. "I'll wait here."

Wilson squinted his eyes at…was this a child? No, the island didn’t let in children. This trainee was just young and new; suffering and death had yet to choke her in their unforgiving holds.

He reached for the cup and poured some coffee into a mug.

That was nice. He wanted to see people like that more often. He wanted to fight away any darkness and shadows that came toward them. He wanted them to stay that way—excited, new, earnest. One part of him said this was useless and annoying but the other said this was precious, something meant to be protected; someone meant to be happy and stay happy even if they were a flower growing in concrete.

He hummed softy, worry lines un-creasing as he walked over to the same table and sat down. Wilson said nothing at first, just took a long sip before setting the cup down. “Okay.”

As promised, Hattie waited patiently for him to come around. After taking stock of the situation, she had moved on to plan the rest of her day, including pondering a new angle for her research, by the time the man came around. He'd taken his seat, he drank some of his coffee, and his single word was all that was needed to snap the redhead back to the present.

"Ah! Yes. First~ Hello, I'm Harley Kiddo, my friends call me Hattie." She held out her hand over the table, ready for him to shake. "I'm sorry for bothering you so early in the morning, I really am."

He blinked at the outstretched hand at first. What wa—Oh. Oh, this sort of thing was almost archaic for him. Finally, the full hunter took Hattie’s hand. “Wilson.”

Once he let go, he slowly shrugged his shoulders before reaching for his mug again. “This isn’t the first time so it’s okay. Are you doing research or something?”

"Nice to meet you, Wilson!" She shook his hand firmly, and retracted it a moment later, refolding her hands on top of the table.

"…Sssoort…of…?" Hattie's face scrunched up for a moment, wobbling her hand as if she wasn't quite sure. On one hand, this was definitely not research - at least not Deus-sanctioned research. On the other, well…it kind of was some weird social thing to research. "Okay, see, I have this friend, and - he's actually a friend, it's not a weird euphemism or whatever - and -" Like most things she involved herself with, she simply got right to the point: "I was actually wondering if you, or someone you know, might be interested in sleeping with a cute, pale white-boy with white-blonde hair and dark chocolate eyes?"

He stiffened. His Death hunter instincts were kicking in. Wilson’s eyes narrowed slightly as he tried to take in the girl’s movements, words, expressions. Everything. For someone not mentally sound, his thoughts were moving unexpectedly quickly, and by the time Hattie had finished with his question he’d already expected it. “Um.”

Considering he was more of a recluse, he couldn’t think of anyone off the top of his head. “I don’t think I know anyone who’s looking right now, and as for me…” A sudden pause.

He pursed his lips at first, then bit on the bottom one as he zoned out.

Wilson did a surprisingly-fantastic job of masking the pain and oncoming tears at the mere thought of maybe getting involved with someone else, but also he was tired and he kind of wanted to help her out.

“…I’d have to think about it. What’s your friend like?”

"…Oh. Well. That's alright then. Thanks f-" Hattie cut herself off as she realized, belatedly, that he had only really refused others. For himself, she had a solid maybe! That was something, right? Even a little bit of one? The trainee perked up considerably, blue eyes wide with hope.

"Ah! A maybe!" She wiggled in her seat for a moment, then leaned in again, grinning. "His name is Ever! He's pretty cool. Kinda quiet, pretty sarcastic, though. Not really a relationship person, but super into big beds. Lookin' for flings, you know? Very into dudes, not very picky." She prattled on with animated hands about what she knew about Ever which, really, wasn't much. Up until recently she only knew him as Zeke's occasional bedmate, but she did like the guy. He was fun.

"And hey, tell me about you? It's only fair, right?"

Wilson should have tried to pursue a career in Hollywood with the amount of flawless acting he was putting on. He managed to not reflexively lean back when the girl’s eyes lit up. She was starting to get expectations, and he was starting to feel pressured to meet these expectations. s**t.

He fidgeted slightly. Would drinking coffee calm down his nerves a bit? The hunter tried taking a sip but nope, it had absolutely no ******** effect like he expected it to. ******** this immunity. “Oh, okay.” Wilson wasn’t too keen on finding another relationship, considering—

No, no, don’t go there. He squeezed his eyes shut, filling in his silence with more mindless gestures like adjusting his glasses. “I kind of prefer girls, but—“ He stumbled. “—but I’m not picky.”

“Well, I’m 26. I like science, I got, my, degree in biomedical engineering. I like viola, used to collect guns.” He looked down, and for another moment his eyes glazed over. “Useless talent of walking backwards.” Wilson held onto his mug and closed his eyes, dimples dotting the edges of his mouth as he shared an inside joke with himself.

Despite her eager smile and her carefree casting, Hattie was actually watching Wilson rather closely. It was a habit she had, and not one that she actively announced. Though, for all her efforts, she couldn't see much past what he was giving her: the fill-in gestures, the way he seemed to think before he spoke. To her, it seemed that he was all sorts of normal, if not the more scholarly type of normal, but she knew better than to believe that.

Deus was practically the Island of Misfit Toys, after all.

"We really can't afford to be, can we?" Hattie heaved an understanding sigh, shaking her head as if it were a great shame. "But hey, at least we're all pretty awesome, right? I mean, for the most part - there are some serious pieces of trash on this island. Complete dicks, but on the whole, you know? We're pretty cool." She winked at him, and folded her linked fingers under her chin.

"Used to collect guns? Can't anymore?" Did the island have a thing against guns? She had never considered it before. "-Hey man, walking backwards is a fantastic talent! Also, that explains the cute butt!" Snorting at her own joke, Hattie freed one hand to wave it dismissively. "Sorry, sorry, I'm awful, I know." One eye peeked open, as if to see if she had scared him off yet. If she hadn't, she'd continue happily:

"Biomedical engineering, huh? That's pretty awesome! Can I ask how come you didn't end up in Life?"

A wry smile as he flicked his gaze away. “Is that so? I didn’t realize.” A pause. “If that’s what you think.”

This time, when he looked into the distance it was more comical. “What’s the point of collecting guns when you have to start from scratch?” Besides, trainees had miniscule salaries, and now that he had a decent income he just didn’t have the energy or will to pick up the hobby again. At the very least, he occasionally went to shooting ranges to dust off his skills during his off days, but that was the most he did.

Wilson’s eyes widened and he furrowed his brows at Hattie. What? Wait, that didn’t make sense. His partner would never see his butt because he was walking backwards, and she’d never said anything about him having a cute bu—nevermind. He opted for saying nothing and skipping to the next question. “Death is where they put me, and I like it too.” The technology here wasn’t exactly the same too, what with it being powered by runes and all.

Hattie blinked, as if she hadn't considered that.

"Ah. Right. Yes, of course. That makes sense." No wonder it was used to: he wouldn't have been able to bring them with him, after all. There would simply be too much to be worth the trouble. "Sorry, that was kind of a stupid question, wasn't it?" She laughed at herself, and happily so. It was the best way to cope, in her opinion.

Her laugh peaked just a little louder at the look he gave her compliment, but she thankfully had the grace to not bring up the way he so pointedly ignored it after that. It was adorable. Wilson was adorable.

"That's fair, I suppose. At least you're happy, huh? But hey - do you think I could maybe pick your brain for some upcoming research projects, though? I think your background could lend some very important insights into my work!"

Perhaps this was why Wilson was in Death and Hattie was in Life. “It’s only stupid if you direct it to Caelius.” A number of looks and emotions seemed to flash across the hunter’s face when he mentioned his superior’s face, but none of them looked all that pleasant.

He leaned forward, his hand pressed to his cheek as he eyed Hattie. Tired eyes flickered toward her coat then back to her face. “What kind of work?”

"I hear he's quite the friendly person." Hattie drawled, grinning a moment later. Nah, she had heard horror stories. Horror stories. She had yet to meet him, and hoped she would avoid it at all costs, but alas. It was a small island, and it was bound to happen.

Her grin remained when she realized that she'd gotten his attention, though perhaps it got a little more knowing.

"Well, right now, Zeke and I are studying the effects of FEAR run-off on surrounding aquatic wildlife. We could always use better equipment for that. As for me…I want to make an accurate scanner-radar. So we know what we're going up against, down to the sub-species, instead of simply knowing there are hostiles. It'll involve a lot of figuring out the molecular aspects of creatures." This time, it was her turn to lean in again, as if sharing a secret.

"So? What do you think?"
