Orin had not slept much—or, at least, it hadn't felt like he did. Several long hours had passed so his body should have felt rejuvenated, but he was tired and sluggish and he suspected it had something to do with all the running around he did yesterday. His brain was running slow though—probably a result of emotions, lack of sleep and…that thing.

Orin sighed, because he had specifically told himself not to think about it, and yet here he was, doing it again.

He held his spoon a little tighter and poked it into the bowl of cereal Bellatrix had provided him with before she had run off to go get ready for work.

As soon as she started moving around, he'd woken up, and she had been too good of a host and too caring of a mother not to try and pamper him before she left. So there he was, sitting at her dining room table, hesitantly spooning small bites of cereal into his mouth as he tried to figure out what he was doing today. On one hand, he felt tired enough that he might actually be able to get to sleep, but on the other hand…

He was afraid if he closed his eyes again he'd dream about her eyes all night long.

So instead, Orin sighed and focused on shoveling a huge spoonful of cereal into his mouth and chomped loudly, as if by doing so he could chase away all his unwanted thoughts.

Millie liked sleeping in when she could, and with highschool being the life draining pest that it was…sleeping in had become a weekend only treat…but since today was the weekend. She had slept in like a real champion. Finally the teenager managed to drag herself out of bed and went downstairs, completely ignoring the note on her door from her mother letting her know that Orin was there. Because who actually looked at notes that were tacked onto the bathroom mirror? She sure didn’t.

She was still in that zombie like state as she entered into the kitchen, pouring herself a bowl of cereal and frowning when she saw just how much milk was left. There had been so much more there yesterday…oh well.

With a sigh, she brought her bowl to the table and sat down, filling it with milk and finally taking a bite, her eyes flicking to Orin.

She jumped so high, the spoon went flying through the air, landing with a clatter clear across the kitchen.

“What the hell are you doing here, Orin? Don’t scare me like that!”

Orin nearly jumped when the spoon clattered, but it took all of his nerves to sit still and not look like a total coward. Even if he was confused as to why Millie was yelling at him. "Sorry," he said, and while he genuinely meant it his voice sounded muted and tired.

He swallowed the lump in his throat and had to put his spoon down. He didn't want her to see how badly his hands were shaking so he set them on his lap under the table.

"I came over last night. Your mom said I could spend the night. She said she left you a note," he mumbled, voice tapering off. "…Anyway, if you don't want me here I can leave. I…kinda wanted to talk to you, though…"

The teenager shook her head, getting up to retrieve the spoon that she had flung, and get herself a new one. It gave her a good thirty seconds to compose herself too, if there was anything she was expecting at the breakfast table it sure as heck wasn’t Orin.

Finally she sat back down, sticking the new spoon into her cereal bowl. “Okay, what did you want to talk about…and if mom left a note, I didn’t see it.”

Millie took a bite of cereal and blinked, frowning. “You spent the night? Seriously? Mom let you do something like that? Your dad let you do something like that? Jeeze, the first time you came over he practically needed a court ordered background check on me and mom…What’s up, Orin? You okay?”

He didn’t really seem like himself…

"We…I didn't ask him, she left him a message. I am pretty sure I'll have to explain myself when I get home, but…" he sighed heavily. "It's buying me some time to come up with a good answer. I'm no good at lying to dad so I just…I hope he doesn’t find out…"

About his whole powering up thing. He just couldn’t let him find out.

"…I've been kinda messed up last night," Orin confessed, twiddling his thumbs beneath the table.

"I ran into this Nega, and…I don't know. I couldn’t go home. I came here to talk to you, but your mom was home, so I talked to her instead. But. I don't know what to do now. She—the Nega—she…took this girl's…"

Was he rushing into this? Should he have taken more time to build up to this, or was it okay to just be blunt? Millie was blunt. She'd understand if he didn't want to pad around the situation.

"…She took her starseed. She killed her. In front of me, and I couldn't stop it."

Millie winced as she took a bite of her cereal, chewing slowly. Jeeze that must have been a bad thing to watch…and Orin wasn’t nearly as tough as she was…but even she was pretty sure that would make her a little messed up. That was really just watching someone murder someone else and…

That was just harsh.

She was going to give a word of comfort, of strength, but instead she frowned slightly, confused at something.

“Orin…what did you tell my mom that let her let you stay here?”

Because…well. That was a scary thought in and of itself. But it was something that she had to know before moving forward…if he told her mom that he was a senshi, well…that might not end well for either of them!

Orin was not a good liar so he did everything in his power not to lie to Millie. "I just…I told her I saw something and was scared to go home. Your guys' house was closer and I was going to ask for a ride or something, but she said I could spend the night and texted my dad. Which is good, because—Millie—if my dad had seen me last night…I don't know, I was really messed up."

He was still messed up, but now he was just trying to handle it a bit better.

Now though, Orin looked worried and glanced up at Millie like he was ashamed; he didn't know what to tell her and he didn't know what he expected, but he couldn't keep his head up for long. After only a second his head was bowed and he was chewing on his cheek, worrying she was going to berate him for messing up.

She let out a relieved sigh and nodded, taking another bite of cereal. “Orin, you know this job isn’t for everyone. I know this job isn’t for everyone…it’s a scary thing, and the people we’re fighting against are crazy ********.” She looked at the other teen with a somewhat sad expression.

“I’m glad you’re okay though. You’re lucky you didn’t get hurt. Orin, we have to get you stronger. I don’t want to lose you. You’re my best friend, and if anything happened to you, I don’t know what I’d do.”

Millie stood up and walked over to the other side of the table, hugging Orin from behind. “Be careful. If you want me with you when you patrol, I’d be happy to go with you. We have to get you to be a real senshi too...you’d be so much stronger if you were.”

The teen gave the boy a squeeze and sighed. “We got this, Orin. We got this.”

When Millie started talking about how the job wasn't for everyone, he was worried she was going to tell him to quit. Because that was the last thing he wanted to do—not when he knew there were people out there he wanted to protect, and not when he knew that he didn't want to seem weak to her.

She walked around and hugged him from behind and he let out a shuddering sigh and nodded. "Okay," he mumbled. "…I want to get stronger, I don't want to quit. I'm working on it—I have been, I promise. I just…feel like I'm always a few steps behind where I need to be. But I know I want to get stronger. I'll do anything, Millie. I want to be stronger."

“I don’t want you to quit either, Orin. I need you with me, pal. I mean…no pun intended, but you’re the glue that holds me together when I’m upset you know.”

Millie didn’t like seeing him like this. Orin was supposed to be happy and…and cheerful. She was supposed to be the brooding one, not him…this just wasn’t right.

She had to do something, clearly. “Why don’t you take me on a date or something later…you know, if you wanted…” Maybe she was reading him right…because she thought he might have a crush on her…since she sort of had one on him…

“I mean, mom says I can’t date until I’m sixteen…but I guess you’re a different story since she let you spend the night, so…wanna do something?”

Orin seemed absolutely dumbfounded with the words Millie did choose to use. Tough love, he expected, but…

His ears were burning and he was afraid he'd misheard her—and then the red flushed over his cheeks. "A date? I—I'd love to do something, yeah," he said, and for that split second he forgot all about the girl on the roof. He should have felt bad for it, but how could he when it was Millie talking to him? …It was too easy to just focus on her and remember that things weren't all bad in the world.

"Y-yeah, we should go see a movie or something, or get some cheeseburgers or—or something. I'd—I'd like that a lot. And even if your mom doesn't want us dating, like, we could still be friends. Dad likes you a lot, too, so…I mean, he might be okay with it."

He looked up at her and flashed a small, hesitant smile. "…I like you a lot, so…I'd like that a lot."

Millie grinned in response and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. “Great. Then I’ll go get ready and we can swing by your place first so your dad doesn’t end up dying of worry. Finish breakfast, I’ll be right back, Orin.”

She fluffed his hair and ran back upstairs, her own breakfast lying forgotten on the kitchen table.

There was no turning back now. Things had just taken a turn with Orin that she had caused and if things got bad…well. She just wouldn’t think of that now. Couldn’t think of that now.

But what was she going to wear?

If Orin had thought his face was red before, he'd have died seeing it now. His stomach was full of butterflies and all he could think about was a date with Millie. A kiss from her.

…He was going to have a lot of time to worry about that girl he'd abandoned on the roof top—the girl he'd watched the Negaverse Agent steal the life from.

It was something he might never get over, but for right now…

But Millie had taken his mind off of the woman's face. And even just a little reprieve…meant the world.

And if Millie had faith in him, he could have faith in himself, too.
