Laurel loved spending time in Arkham's common room, espescially when the caretakers let him bring his projects in so he could work on them. He'd found a great amount of joy in sewing lately and had experimented with making small plushies, the kind you'd put on your desk or dangle from your backpack. It was fun, though challenging, and he really hoped that constant practice would help him improve.
"Hmm... Not many people today." He muttered as he took his usual seat in the corner. He was used to a few other kids occupying the room and, admittedly, felt a little sad that there wouldn't be the noise of someone else playing to keep him company. However, this was his practice time before he had to join Emma for dinner and he had to use it well, noise or no noise!

It wasn't long after Laurel flopped down that Milo wandered in, his arms filled to the brim with painting supplies. He was so happy that the caretakers had finally agreed to let him paint outside of art class! All he had to do was clean up after himself and everything would be a-okay! He scurried about, dropping at least three tubes of paint, and set his canvas down. Now... What would be his subject? There had to be some interesting this laying about that he could study, but where? Blue eyes peered around, scrutinizing the area, before noticing Laurel sitting in the corner. A still life! Perfect! This would be his masterpiece!
He inched closer to Laurel, not wanting to disturb the demon from his work, and quietly sat adjacent to him. They had a lot of pink on them, didn't they? He hoped he had enough red and white to cover all of them! If not, maybe he could improvise?

Though the baphomet's steps had been quiet, they hadn't gone unnoticed by the carefully trained ears of the demon in the corner. Laurel glanced up to this new person curiously and stifled a laugh as they seemed to fumble about with their paint, before settling on sitting across from him. He wondered, as he tied off his last few stitches, just why the blue haired boy had decided to sit next to him instead of anywhere else in the room. There were plenty of other places to sit and paint, so why choose the space where someone else was sitting?
"Hi there! I like your smock." He commented, his hands busy threading a needle. "It's got all the colors of the rainbow on it!"

Oh no, he'd been spotted! He'd wanted so badly to paint them without being spotted! Mama said it was the best way to get someone to look natural in a painting or picture was to catch someone when they weren't looking! Milo hid his disappointment behind his canvas, not wanting the other boy to see him looking upset, but gradually lowered it when they noticed what Laurel was doing. Were they stitching? He leaned closer, his eyes widening.
"T-thank you!" He stuttered, his lips contorting in thought. "I like... Uh... Your... Starfish?"

Laurel laughed as the boy came closer, obviously interested by what he was making. However, he couldn't help but pout at their assumption. Couldn't they tell he was making a kitten and not a starfish? He needed more practice than he thought! The demon let out a sigh and set his work down, before giving the boy a smile.
"Well, I guess it could be a starfish now, but it was supposed to be a kitten." He replied, offering a chuckle. "... Uhm... What's your name? I don't think I've seen you before!"

Ah! Now he'd gone and insulted their work, too! This was turning out to be a great meeting, wasn't it? He couldn't imagine that they'd let him paint them if he asked after that slip up! Milo glanced away, a nervous habit he'd learned from his days in the orphanage, and only looked back when Laurel asked for his name. Wait, he hadn't upset him? They were laughing! Maybe things weren't as bad as he thought they were?
"I-I'm Milo, and I just moved in a few days ago!" He said, grinning. "My mom said I could become a great artist if I started studying here, so she signed me up! I'm really excited, art class is so much fun!"
He wiggled, his body suddenly filled with excitement, and laughed.
"But, uh, what's your name?" He asked, pointing toward Laurel's sewing bag. "You look really professional with all that stuff, I bet you're gonna get really good!"

Laurel tilted his head as Milo spoke. So, this kid had a family and he was going to school here? That was kind of cool, but it had him curious. He didn't have any family, as far as he knew, because he was born and raised here in the academy like a lot of other kids. The idea of having a family to go back to on weekends sounded nice, but it was something he'd never have, so it wasn't really something he dwelled on. However, he could imagine what it would be like. An adult, maybe two or more, some siblings, a room of your own, family meals and trips... It had to be nice.
"Oh, welcome to Arkham, then!" He chirped, nodding along with Milo's excitement. "I've never met someone who had a mom before, though. What's it like? Do you live in a big house? Do you have your own bedroom?"
He found himself pausing as his sewing was mentioned again and blushed. Aw, did they really think so? That was a relief!
"Thanks, I'm trying my best, because that's the best I can do!" He said, echoing Milo's grin. "And my name's Laurel! It's really nice to meet you!"

Milo's expression faltered slightly as the conversation shifted to questions about Milo's mother. The feeling he had wasn't exactly negative, but it did make him a little nervous. Was Laurel an orphan like him, or one of those kids who were raised in the academy? He'd heard that there were tons of children like that here, so he was bound to meet one eventually, but he couldn't help but feel jealous. Getting raised in the academy had to be a million, billion times better than growing up in an orphanage. ... But, maybe that was insensitive. He did have a mom now and a beautiful house, which Laurel didn't. It was wrong for him to be mean-spirited like this.
"It's... Nice!" He replied, mustering a smile. "I like having my own room and stuff, but that's not the best part. They best part is having a mom to snuggle up to when bad dreams happen and that bakes really yummy cookies! That's what I love the most!"
He allowed himself to dwell on his new mother for a moment and remember the scent of the cookies she'd baked him on his first day home. Chocolate chip peanut butter, the best cookies in all of Below! The thoughts calmed his nerves and gave him the confidence to continue talking.
"But, I wasn't always so lucky. I had parents before my mom now, until they passed away." He continued, somberly. "I don't remember them, though, all I remember is the orphanage I got taken to. ... But, I'm really happy that I don't live there anymore and I get to come to school here! It's super fun and everyone shares their toys and stuff. I like that!"

An orphanage? Laurel had heard that word somewhere else before. It was probably during one of his classes when he wasn't paying attention, but it did sound familiar. Wasn't it a home for kids who didn't have families? But, that would mean that Milo didn't always have a family. His eyes widened as Milo went on and Laurel's little demon heart just about sank. He couldn't imagine having a family, let alone losing them, too! It was almost too much for him to handle thinking about! His hands went toward his work.
"I'm glad you're happy now, Milo!" He exclaimed, his hands fumbling with the plushie a bit.
He eventually placed it aside again when he felt that wouldn't distract him enough and tapped his hands against his legs. He had so many more questions to ask about the orphanage and what that was like, but something told him that it would make Milo feel sad. He didn't want to make a new friend feel sad, espescially if he'd only just moved into the academy! He had to think of something, anything! His eyes moved around the room a moment, before settling on Milo's painting supplies. Bingo!
"Uhm, can you show me how to paint, Milo?" He asked, scooting toward the paint. "I'm not too good at it, and if you want, I could show you how to stitch? It's really easy and it's useful to know when you have a tear in your clothes or toys!"

Milo watched Laurel fuss with his sewing and leaned away. Maybe talking about the orphanage was a bad idea, Laurel looked really nervous and, frankly, Milo didn't feel too good either. There were still some sad memories he hadn't dealt with yet and he didn't want to talk about. Hopefully Laurel wouldn't ask any more questions about it... But then what else would they talk about? He didn't really have anything else to say!
The baphomet bit his lips, the awkward silence starting to get to him, until Laurel spoke. What? Teach him how to paint? No way! Milo's cheeks flushed red before he could take a breath. He was floored!
"S-sure! I would love to!" He chattered, snatching his canvas from off the floor. "It's not tough at all if you follow the basics! I can show some really easy stuff!"
The pair of freshlings huddled together in the corner for at least the next hour or two before Laurel realized it was time to meet Emma for dinner. However, as all children do, they'd gotten themselves covered in paint! Some of the paint even had pieces of thread and fabric stuck to them from Laurel's part of the lesson! Hopefully the caretakers wouldn't be too mad at them for the mess they'd made!
