She and her brother- her favoritest unicorn brother- were going to hang out today! And they weren't just going to hang out, oh no. No, today they were going to practice fencing, which was one of her all-time favorite things to do. Normally she practiced with her dad, but today was just going to be her and her dear brother. She had everything all set up in the back yard; she'd picked the springiest foils and had gotten their masks out of storage by herself. Perhaps she was a little over-excited; after all, it wasn't like they never saw each other. They did live in the same house, after all. But this was different- this was planned and going to just be oodles of fun! She had a special bond with Lance; while she loved all of her siblings dearly, Royal We and Damselfly were a little more... delicate than she'd like. They were less down for the rough-and-tumble stuff, and they didn't quite understand her drive to be a great knight like her brother did. If she ever got to fight a dragon, it'd be Lance she'd want at her side- which was why sparring with him was so important. Practice always made for better teamwork!

Now. Where was Lance?

There was something itching at the back of Lance's mind that he felt like he was forgetting. Some of his schoolmates had asked him to come study, and well, who was he to say no? It was a grandly generous offer of them to include him in their learning. He was, after all, very new to the school. It would have been very easy to be overlooked in favor of simply associating with the phonies they already knew and were friends with. But no! They had extended a hoof of friendship to him! All in all, Just Lance was over the moon with excitement. With a skip in his step, he bound out the back door, humming a jaunty tune to himself.

"Good morrow, sister! How fares th--" Whatever happy greeting was on his tongue died in his throat when he spied the setup. Ah. THIS was what he had been forgetting. Swallowing heavily, he trotted over, inspecting the lancing arena. Yes, he and Dragonfly HAD discussed this previously. How on EARTH had he forgotten? Frowning to himself, he glanced to his schoolbook.

"I... wouldst you hold our activities for one moment? I seem to have forgotten something, sister mine. I..." Gosh, how was he going to admit this. "I have double-booked myself for the day, it would seem."

Dragonfly's heart fell as Lance looked at his book. But- but- but- but they'd planned this! This was their brother-sister bonding time! This was important!

But then, they lived together. They were siblings. They could hang out any time, and if Lance had big plans for the day, then that was fine. If the book was any indication, he was doing something important and academic. Studying wasn't her favorite thing to do; she hit the practice field far more frequently than she hit the books- but that sort of thing was important to Lance. She shouldn't be selfish and insist on her interests; while this was something they shared, he deserved to get to do his own thing as well. They could just do this some other time and she could practice by herself; after all, you didn't need a partner for stances and stretching and working on fine magic and motor control. Certainly it was more fun with a partner, but it was definitely something she could do by herself.

She'd just ignore that her heart was in little pieces on the floor. Anything for her brother! That's how it went with family. You sacrificed for their happiness, so that's what she'd do.

"Oh! That's- that's fine! It's ok- we can do this any time!" She put on a big smile so that he'd know she meant it. "I'll just work on magic and maybe some wing stuff; you know, balance, stance, posture, that sort of thing. I can work alone for now! Are you going to the library?" If he was gonna go off on his own, he could maybe at least tell her where he was going. That way at least she wouldn't be jealous. Because he was obviously going to the library... which was not her favorite place.

Dear sweet Dragonfly was putting on the semblance of a brave facade, but this was his sister. Just Lance just knew. They had a special bond, the two of them. An understanding of the dedication of knighthood- the sacrifice, the work, the time. His studies were important, but..

"Just- just hold a moment, will you? I'll be right back." And with that, he was off- racing away down the path to the aforementioned meeting spot with his school fellows. Luckily, his satchel had a quill and paper, so he could leave a note- knowing them, they would not show up for some time. With his magic, he ripped the quill from his belongings, and began to scramble out the note. A flowery apology, laced with regrets and sincerest apologies. Onwards he wrote, feather flowing in the grip of his magic. And... there! Tacking it up to the meeting tree, Lance drew a deep breath, and once more made the sprint back to his house. Only once did he have to stop, chest heaving as he tried to force himself to breathe.

And then he was back. Collapsing to the ground, Just Lance breathed as best as he could manage, hooves splayed out and exhausted. Running was not his thing. Holding up a hoof, he bid Dragonfly wait one moment more, then wheezed out.

"You- you're. You're more important," he gasped, looking up to her with a shaky smile. "I canceled."

Who was crying? She wasn't crying. Her brother might be having some kind of attack, but she definitely wasn't crying. Extending a hoof, she pulled him to his feet. "You didn't have to do that, you know. I could have waited." She paused, not wanting to seem ungrateful. He'd sacrificed time spent on his studies to hang out with her, and that was important. Really important. He understood how much this meant to her in a way that the rest of her siblings couldn't. Loyalty was important- she'd always be there for any of them- and it was so wonderful that he was there for her. "But I'm really glad you did. It's a lot more fun to do this with a partner, and you're the best partner. Really. You're the only one who really gets me, you know? And so... thank you. Thanks for hanging out with me." She lifted a foil and swung it around. "But that doesn't mean I'm not going to kick your butt!"

While he enjoyed the company of his friends, he had given his sister his word. And it was like Dragonfly said- they got each other. There was a special bond in their gallantry. When he was back to his hooves once more, Just Lance shook his head.

"Nay, there was no other option." He argued, shaking his head with a smile. "Tis true I care for my friends, but not nearly as much as I care for you! I also pledged you my word, and that is not something I intend to break." Perhaps his friends would be upset, but were they good Phonies, they would understand. If not... well. They were not Phonies he would need in his life. Who would not understand the value of the ties of loyalty?

With his own magic, Just Lance picked up his own foil, and scoffed dismissively at his sister. Hah! Thinking that she could best him!

"You're going to eat your words, dear sister!

"Hah! I'd like to see you try!" She quickly blinked away a tear. She wasn't as good at words as he was, but she knew he knew how much this meant. This was what was best about family. The love and loyalty you put in was reciprocated tenfold. Family always had your back- in the end, they'd pull through. At least... hers always would, because that's what family meant to them. Maybe other families weren't as awesome.

Most other families probably didn't let their children play with swords so frequently, for example. "Parry! Riposte! Thrust!" she shouted, swinging the foil carefully. Between their hard work at practice and their work at being better phonies off the battlefield, they were both going to be great knights!
