While on a patrol mission, Aerona and Luxara fight out some boredom.

Patrol missions had gotten significantly less terrifying since Aerona’s encounter with the huge Swamp Parent. Other than the occasional mini-parent, chitterbeast and fluttermaw there weren’t particular fauna-based dangers during the nighttime. Daytime was another story, of course, but when wasn’t it? If anything, daywalkers helped cut down on mid-sized predators that were more of a threat to the rebel outpost. While the rebels had gotten settled in, Aerona had taken every opportunity to volunteer for scouting and border missions – sometimes hoping to walk back into the mountains where she could feel brisk, cool air again rather than the muggy moisture that the swamp seemed to ensure. It was on this night that she was fortunate enough to be paired with Luxara Seleni – Moon. Terms had still been a bit awkward since the original discovery of Salamire, but with a few battles under their belt she couldn’t deny her fondness for the little greenblood. Scrappy and hell, even used and displaced. She could admire someone who’d fallen that far and was still kicking, maybe a bit selfishly.

Aerona tugged her beanie over her head and pulled twin braids in front as she waded through the muck. This mission today was methodical, if not painstaking. Charting the flow of the swamp and the landscape was nasty, ever-changing work, but at least getting a basis on their immediate environment was critical for the rebellion. Aerona had taken to tinkering with mechanics during her time in the Initiative, creating her own explosives and other useful trinkets from scalped blueprints from the city. Tonight, she’d outfitted some measurement devices that she had stored in her pack and given to Luxara.

“Only…” Aerona checked her map – a modified version of the TPS she’d completely stripped. “One hundred meters that way, and we’ll get our last measurements until the tide rises all the way…” She announced. Aerona sighed. “We might as well save ourself a round trip back here and wait a bit for it, shouldn’t we?” What a pain. Aerona looked to Luxara for her input.

Luxara had wanted to go all in and help with whatever she could. She had to prove herself as loyal and willing and capable, and she had plenty of unique services to provide. Scouting and hunting were her forte, for example. So she was happy enough to get an idea of the area without the royal army on her tail. It made sense, anyway. Knowing the area around where you live. Good for having an idea of what was safe, what was gator hell, what was mostly-solid ground, what made for good routes to and from the Outpost...

But she wasn't exactly one for the complicated side of things. Luxara was given some things to help measure stuff, but it was a new idea for her. They were watching the water levels. It was so...specific. Definitely not forest stuff. There had been the lake at Four Fronds, sure, but she didn't have to keep track of its rise and fall. New territory indeed.

Watching, waiting, and not much else to do. The experience seemed like it could get boring pretty quickly.

"I mean if we don't want to waste stamina for no good reason, sure." Luxara replied with a shrug. "I like moving when I need to, but you make it sound like there wouldn't be any point. So let's go with that!"

But the question was, what to do next. Few creatures were stirring at the moment, and it might not be a good idea to draw a rise from anything anyway. "Soooooo...how's your new place coming along?"

“Mmm…” Aerona found a stick laying on the ground and promptly began making patterns idly with it. “New place? Well… I kinda have a little hovel back at the HQ or whatever, but since I’m not as wanted as you guys I can skip back home occasionally. Or ‘coon hop around the cities. But you’re making permanent residence, right?”

Poor Luxara. Her face – among the rest of the rebels, maybe excluding the rebel leaders – was well cemented in the minds of at least one prominent royalist commanding officer. Aerona at least had some anonymity, though with Lorata she too was playing with fire. It was something strange that the two had in common.

“Do you know if your old hive is still standing, or do you think they’ll go bust ‘em up?”

"Oh. That's cool! Being able to do stuff like that. I kinda wish I could do that. I mean, I never really got out a lot before, but now that I can't without playing pretend it's...I dunno. It's kinda suffocating." Luxara admitted, but amiably. "You take advantage of it, right? If you don't, you totally should! I mean, whatever you cityslickers do there." She didn't have a clue.

She started fidgeting with the coat arms tied around her waist, pulling them to reinforce the knot. Aerona had to get deep in the subject about her old home, making Luxara halt. "Well there was a fire, right? And Captain Jackass knows where I live, so. It's a crapshoot!" she laughed, painfully. "But living out here is fine. It's a community, and I never really had that before so it's nice, you know? I miss everything, but at the same time.....I've got you guys. I'm somewhere better, I think. I mean part of it sucks, but there're good parts. I like to think about that more than the fact that the only place I've ever known is probably gone."

God, the subject just made her want to climb up a tree. She still had that. "You ever look at the stars? Like, really look at them? Sometimes if it's clear out the clusters kinda look like shapes. It's nice." A sudden change of subject, but kind of necessary to change the train of thought. "Space is pretty, y'know?"

Someone please shut Luxara up

Aerona listened and nodded. “Mmhmm…. Yeah… Yeah.” She folded her arms across her chest. Luxara was spouting off again. The redblood kicked at a stray rock on the ground and grimaced. She could at least return home. Luxara was in the center of all of it, and beyond Byakko was enemy number 1 for a certain greenblood. Well – who knew if that was the case. Maybe he didn’t care all that much. He sure didn’t care about killing his previous associates. Luxara changed the subject desperately and Aerona went along with it.

“Sure is, Moon.” She agreed. Aerona looked around and exhaled out her nose. “Hey, look. This may take a while and we’re not going anywhere. You wanna tussle or something? I could use a breather from this dark woe-is-us-but-at-least-we’re-not-dead stuff.”

Right to the point. Aerona gestured to her thigh pouch and then Luxara’s crossbow. “No weapons, no gadgets. It’ll be fun!” She gave her a reassuring smile.
