As much as she loved Laney, their tiny apartment had just felt too small this evening. She'd stolen away, not to patrol, but to sit on the roof of a neighboring building, a flannel blanket pulled tight around her shoulders, and look at the stars. It was a clear night. Cold air always made the stars shine brighter - Teide had thought that for as long as she could remember.

She wasn't paying much attention to the ground below. As the skies spun overhead, so too spun the earth. She could feel signatures moving in the night, light and dark, kin and once-kin. No one was going to approach her, she didn't think. Not a single, unremarkable knight minding her own business, a blanket around her shoulders and and a bag of gummy dinosaurs between her knees.

No. On second thought - there was chaos approaching, darkness that reeked of blood and tarnished metal. How strange to think that darkness had once felt like home to her - now it just set her teeth on edge, made the hair on the back of her neck stand up.

Teide pushed herself up against the side of the HVAC piping, wedging herself into a bend between two sections, and peered around owlishly. The captain was close. She didn't want to fight - but she would if she had to. She still remembered Bischofite's Lessons. Avalon's lessons. The things she'd learned from Natron and from Quartz.

She reached through the dark, pulling her crystal ball to her chest. Maybe it was just her imagination, but did the stars seem dimmer?

The rooftops of Destiny City were often empty.

Although, in Quartz's experience, having command of the high ground was a powerful advantage, he was accustomed to seeing senshi and knights keep themselves mostly planted firmly on the ground. It made sense, from a certain point of view -- youma rarely got it in their heads to go climbing up fire escapes or riding in the service elevator -- so most of their would-be targets were down on the ground, easily accessible and more safely fought.

It made sense, for a knight or a senshi. But for a Negaverse agent, that created an advantage.

Quartz always preferred the safety of as many advantages as possible.

Tonight, though, he'd picked up on the auric bleed of a nearby knight -- and since it was alone, and hadn't really moved in quite some time, he'd decided to follow it.

The power differential -- a knight and a captain -- was a little intimidating, and he nearly passed by. It would've been easy -- the smaller glow of his captain's aura meant he could feel the knight's presence long before he would be close enough for his own to be sensed in return -- but on this occasion, he felt compelled to chance the interaction.

He didn't have as much information to put in his reports, this week. Business had been slow. If that meant venturing into higher-risk interactions, he was just going to have to do it more carefully.

Schörl was understanding of caution, but not of cowardice.

Quartz lit from one rooftop to the next in a series of easy jumps. Finally, his movements carried him to within a line of sight of the knight he was seeking, and he slowed to a stop at a safe distance -- where he could teleport out faster than a knight could probably run.

"Hello," he called out -- but his brain was already telling him something was wrong, something was off -- "I just -- "

It was her pink hair, her skinny knock-knees, her gentle nerves --

No, it couldn't be --

But it was --

" -- Astrophyllite?"

Teide saw him before he saw her, and her breath caught in her throat. She would know him anywhere, the oily sheen of his uniform, the golden trim that spelled out the phases of a solar eclipse. In another life, they'd been friends, however briefly. In another life, he'd saved her and dried her tears and taught her to protect herself.

But that was another life, a different girl, and they were on opposite sides of the war now. There was no telling what he'd do to her. Report her for treason, desertion- drag her back- she knew what she'd do. She'd swallow her own tongue and choke on it first. She'd never tried it, she didn't know if she even could, but she'd read about it in books.

He'd spotted her. Called her by that name.

"Not anymore," she said. "Not since-"

She counted back. "April." She got carefully to her feet, crystal ball in one hand and Haribo bag in the other. The flannel slipped off her shoulders, and her epaulettes caught the light. "I'm Teide. I was always Teide, I just didn't know it yet."

She held the bag out to him - maybe, if they shared food, he wouldn't report her. "Would you like a gummy dinosaur?"

"No," Quartz said stiffly, still staring hard. "I'm afraid I can't accept anything from you."

He was silent for a few long seconds, transfixed.

"What were you thinking?" he finally demanded. "You know what they'll do to you. How could you do something so dangerous? You're just -- "

He dragged a hand through his hair, struck again with emotions he didn't want. This was a lapse. He'd have to report himself to Schörl for this, ask her for her help in ridding himself of it. "You're just a kid."

Teide recoiled slightly. This Quartz was very different from the one who'd saved her from Zircon. "Dangerous?" she asked, looking at the bag in her hand. There was absolutely nothing dangerous about gummy dinosaurs, or offering Quartz one. He was her friend, and he'd found her, and he hadn't attacked her (still hadn't attacked her) - she didn't understand what threat a bag of candy posed to her, except maybe as a choking hazard.

Unless... her eyes drifted from the bag in her hands down to her poofy pastel dress. Unless he's not talking about the candy.

"What do you mean?" she asked, tilting her head to the side. "I know the risks." She'd already begged Natron not to tell anyone about her - she wasn't above begging Quartz.

"Quartz, I wanted to die," she confessed. "I gave my club to a civilian and asked her to kill me - and she would have. And then I wouldn't have been a kid, I would have been dead, and I'd still have been happier than being alive in the Negaverse."

Death before dishonor, she thought. That was what he'd probably say. He wasn't her Quartz anymore, not really. He was a captain, and Chaos was making him cruel the way it had made her cruel. "I had to," she said. "For me. To survive. Please take a dinosaur."

Quartz shook his head. He couldn't accept this. He wouldn't accept this. Not the gummy dinosaurs she was offering, and not her -- dressed in a pristine white and blue dress like a sacrificial calf.

She was waiting to be stained red, waiting to die.

"You just had a lapse," Quartz insisted. "It's okay. You were scared -- you were upset. I have lots of lapses. It's okay, you just have to tell someone, and they'll help you get yourself under control. They'll understand how this happened. You had a lapse and no one was there to make sure you stayed safe."

Quartz looked at her plaintively.

"Please come back. I don't want this for you."

Teide tilted her head to the side. It had taken her a moment to figure out what he was talking about, but now she felt certain that it was the chaos talking. The chaos, and maybe fear. Teide had never felt the sting of a cruel commanding officer the way schorl had. Maybe if her training had been left in steadier hands, it would have never come to this. "No," she said. "I chose this for me. I want this for me."

Something in him had changed, she thought, and felt terribly sad for him. He'd been different last time she'd seen him - there'd still been a bit of fight in him, a bit of righteous indignation. Who hurt you, she thought. Show me on the doll where they hurt you.

She bit her lip, taking a step backwards from him. Her hand went to her signet ring, just in case he made a grab for her. "They changed you," she said. "I know that Chaos talks, but - what did they do to you, to make you like this? You're like a dog that's been beat so many times that you're afraid to leave your kennel anymore."

Quartz laughed. It was not a pretty laugh. It was low and chalky, and it had a certain dry-throatedness to it that sounded like someone sounds when they're about to cry, or have been crying for a very long time.

He put both hands to his face, dug the heels of his palms into his eyes, and just kept laughing.

He had no idea what else to do.

"You assumed it was a metaphor," he trilled. His eyes stung. "Just now, you thought it was a metaphor for something else -- ahaha -- ah -- " He was laughing so hard it was difficult to catch his breath.

It took him a minute of gasping laughter before he was able to speak again, pull his hands away from bloodshot, damp eyes. "Astrophyllite," he said, with a bitter laugh still on his lips, "You really don't get it, do you? They did beat me so many times that I'm afraid to leave my kennel anymore."

Teide stared at him, two fingers poised over her signet ring. Something was weird here. Something was wrong. His laugh. His words. All of it, wrong.

She'd misunderstood him, she realized. I don't want this for you wasn't knighthood. It wasn't a traitor's death. It was his sorry existence. Come back. Make nice. Tell them you love them and maybe they won't do this to you.

She cringed. You stupid, stupid baby, she thought - Astrophyllite wasn't smart and Teide wasn't, either. She glanced fearfully to either side - were they being watched? Was Quartz speaking in double meanings and code because he was being surveilled? Or maybe he was just paranoid. It was hard to know, with the state he was in.

"How can I help you?" she asked, ask quietly as she could muster. "I don't know what to do."

Quartz snorted. "You can't help me," he said. "There's not a person in the world who can help me." He wiped at his eyes, trying to slow his breathing. "I'm trying to help you. And what you can do for me, right now, is leave and pretend we never saw each other. And then, any time you ever see me, stay away. Get as far away as you can."

He took a few steps back. "That's what you can do, that's what'll help. I can't let you off the hook more than once."

And even this time, I'll have to bring back information, even if it isn't much. Our rank differential's the only reason I can get away with not engaging her here and now.

Teide nodded, tears burning hot behind her eyes. Don't cry, she thought, jaw clenching. You big stupid baby, don't you dare cry. You knew this would happen! You knew all your old friends would hate you!

But it was just so sad! She'd been saved. Why - why couldn't the same be done for Quartz? She wanted to know, but... she didn't think asking him was going to get her anywhere. She'd more or less already tried that.

She took a few steps back from him, nodding away her tears. "Okay," she said. "I'll go, but - if you ever change your mind, if you ever want to leave and be a wonder again, be a star - come find me. I know people. I can get help."

"The person I used to be had two daughters," he said. "A baby and a toddler. They don't get new glamours, if I purify. Their mom doesn't either. Just me. There's no magic that protects them from being punished if I even try to run." He looked at the ground. "That's reason enough to stay a rock under Metallia's foot. I don't have the luxury of becoming a star anymore."

He turned.

"Goodbye, Astrophyllite."

He disappeared.
