Kaiju Blue was patrolling down by the lagoon. Monster patrol was hard work, but good work. It was good practice for eventually fighting a monster; while he didn't think anything too sinister lived in the lagoon, he could always be wrong. And besides, the swimming and flying and jogging were good for the body. Well, the flying and jogging. The water was really choppy today and didn't look great for swimming. It was still its usual crystalline blue, but even the prettiest water could be deadly- especially if there was an undertow or a riptide.
In the distance, he saw another phony approach. A little unicorn, white and blue- and carrying a beach towel. Waving at him, Kaiju Blue fluttered over. "Hi!" he said, sticking out a hoof. "Name's Kaiju Blue. I'm on monster patrol, but so far this sector is secure. Out here to enjoy the sunshine?" It was a beautiful day, really- so warm for this late in the year. A little breezy, sure, but nothing too blustery. Almost perfect, really.

Scaramouche Fandango I really wanted to quote ScaraDOUCHE fandango but it wouldn't have alerted you. Nobody finds me quite as clever as I find me.  "Kaiju Blue? An interesting name indeed, but I find myself inclined to like it!" Just Lance replied easily, smiling warmly at the stranger. A day by the water was just the thing he needed to get his mind off the stresses of school. All of those books and all of that studying... He just needed some time to himself that involved absolutely no level of higher level thinking. As was appropriate, Just Lance offered his hoof to Kaiju, and shook his hoof firmly in greeting.
"Well met, Kaiju! I am called Just Lance. I suppose Lance would be just fine, if you find my name too long." He had not had a nickname before, but the other phony had introduced himself with one. It seemed only fitting to return the introduction in kind.
"Yes, yes, Tis really a perfect day! I thought I might try some swimming," he added, glancing out to the still waters. Admittedly, he had not had complete lessons, but no matter! A test of strength was nothing to get in his way! Laying his towel down, Just Lance began stretching.
"Too nice of a day to pass up, really!"

The kid was a little prim, but Kaiju found himself liking him nonetheless. He shook the other colt's hoof heartily. "It is a lovely day, isn't it? No monsters, nice and sunny- and- wait, you're here for swimming? A lot of kids don't really swim here because of the waterfall. The pressure creates an underwater current, which can drag you under before you know it. I know it doesn't look like much, but there's a strong tide today. Might be a little too strong for safe swimming; you sure you're up for it?" The kid looked strong, but tides were stronger- and if there was one thing Kaiju knew from his career as a monster hunter, it was that underestimating the strength of the water was a bad, bad idea.

Just Lance's attention turned towards the deceptive lagoon, his grey eyes fixed on the still waters. It made... some sense, he supposed, that it could hide an underwater current. The issue was just... he had his hopes set on practicing swimming. And goodness, wouldn't it be embarrassing to admit he wasn't that great in front of a stranger? Fixing his jaw, he turned back to Kaiju Blue.
"I do think I'll be fine, though your concern is muchly appreciated." He added, sincerely thankful for the kindhearted caring of other phonies. How grand they were! Such nice souls there were. Looking out to the lagoon again, Just Lance dipped his hoof in.

Moonstone Dazzle u can't bring grubs to the school bake sale the principal doesn't CARE if you're pretending to be a cave man
After reaching the point where the water spilled out of the rocks, Kaiju was impressed with how loud it was. There was quite a lot to see up here; while he doubted any large monsters were present, who knew what smaller things he could see! He pulled out his journal and began to sketch a rough map of the area, marking points of cover that either he or a monster might be able to use.

Just Lance waved when the pegasus took off, and carefully set himself into the water. It didn't seem so bad! Rather pleased that he'd decided to try for a swim anyway, he paddled about, rather content with the feeling of the sun on his back and the water around him. What an absolutely perfect day it was! Even as the water pulled him closer and closer, Just Lance had not a care in the world.
...Wait, pulling him closer?
Oh FIDDLESTICKS. Trying to work his little legs harder, a sense of panic crept up on Lance. He REALLY should've listened to that Kaiju fellow! And now he was gone! Closer and closer he drew to the waterfall, and in a panic, Lance cried aloud for help.
"A-anybody? Help! HELP!!!"

As Kaiju investigated a highly suspicious newt (with a little radioactivity, that newt could mutate into something terrifically dangerous within one generation!), something in the distance caught his attention. It was... a voice. A cry for help! Lance? Lance! Abandoning his gear, as he could always come back for it later, Kaiju took wing. It didn't matter that he wasn't saving someone from a monster; Kaiju's mission was to protect life at all costs. It was a little reckless, certainly, to fly so close to the waterfall- but it was the quickest path down. Yes, there he was- struggling in the undertow. Mist from the water dappled the underside of his wings as he dove towards to the lagoon. Flapping his wings as hard as he could, he smacked straight into the flailing foal and let his momentum shove them back into shallower waters. Spluttering and coughing, he used his wings as stabilizers to get the two of them back to the beach. "Are you ok?" he asked, watching Lance carefully. Was this the point where you did CPR? He wasn't exactly a lifeguard.
Come to think of it, what was CPR?

For a moment, Lance was certain this was The End, which was rather a shame- he hadn't even earned his cutie mark! Or been knighted! So many things he hadn't experienced. He and Dragonfly were going to go slay a great beast together... Oh, his poor parents. He should've written a farewell later, in case of a great tragedy like this. Knights were often prone to untimely ends, as far as he could tell.
Only he didn't seem to be dying too badly? Opening his eyes, Lance blinked up several times, taking in the sun and the sky and Kaiju Blue. He'd been saved! The little unicorn shot up, slightly woozy, but none more worse for the wear.
"I- I'm so sorry," he apologized, flushing with embarrassment. "You were, of course, correct the whole time about the pool. I ought not to have doubted you, nor thought so highly of myself." He sniffled, just a touch.
"I owe you my life."

The kid was hysterical- and Kaiju couldn't blame him. Almost drowning was never fun. "Woah woah woah, slow down there buddy!" Kaiju gently pushed Lance back down. "You gotta get some oxygen in you before you can just jump up like that- otherwise you might get dizzy and then things only get worse from there. Right now your body's kinda freaking out a little- take things slow, let it rest and return to normal. It's important to listen to yourself- right now you're running on adrenaline. Take some deep breaths and tell me what happened. Undertow get you?" It was probably the undertow. Kaiju had seen this before- foals who weren't honest to themselves about what they could realistically do very often ran into trouble in the long run. It was lucky that he'd been there, but he wasn't going to say that- Lance was freaked out enough already. No need to rub it in. "You're gonna be ok now. You're on land, you're gonna be ok." Deep breaths, calm him down. That was the priority now.

Sound advice from his newly found saver. (Not savior, no- that language was far too spiritual sounding for this moment. Besides that, Kaiju did not seem the type for such floral language. It would do nothing to try and endear himself to the pegasus.) Inhale, exhale. Inhale, exhale. Just Lance forced himself to pace his breathing, focusing on the sensation of air entering and exiting his body. When he seemed to be at a reasonable breathing rate, he turned his attention back to Kaiju Blue.
"Again... thank you. I shouldn't have thought so much of myself," he admitted with a sigh, casting his eyes downwards in embarrassment. "I was a bit of a liar to say I was such a good swimmer. At least now, I know better."

"Hey now, don't beat yourself up. It was a mistake- the kind everybody makes. Trust me, I've been where you are. I've pushed myself too hard and nature has punished me for it. It's super important to listen to your body and be honest with yourself about your abilities- looking really good at something is one thing, but being unhurt is better. It's not shameful to be honest about your limits!" It probably wasn't exactly what Lance wanted to hear, but it was important to say. Kaiju knew that it was far more important to be honest than to sugarcoat things. But he also knew that honesty needed to come from a real place of love and concern, so he wasn't going to yell at the colt, even though his activities had been interrupted. It was more important to make sure he was ok.

"Thank you for your understanding. Your compassion is admirable," Lance breathed, closing his eyes and continuing to relax more and more. The longer he sat, the better his legs and muscles felt. What a dreadful decision this had been. Truly, he'd hoped just to swim- not to nearly drown and be put in the position of a damsel. He was going to have to rethink his physical abilities before he tried something like this.
"'Tis not shameful at all, no. I'll keep that in mind for the future."

Kaiju shrugged a little, suddenly bashful. "Hey, it's what it is. I mean, my big thing is patrolling for monsters in case I ever have to fight one, but we gotta look out for each other, y'know?" He was really hoping the kid was ok- he knew how frustrating it could be to have your plans thwarted. But maybe he could help a bit... "You know, if you're interested in running around today, maybe working on your quads and getting some endurance training in, why not hike up to the top of the waterfall with me? There's some really cool salamanders up there, if you wanna see 'em. Just if you're up for it! But if you're feeling ok enough to start out, it might help to walk a bit. It's not too far and it's got a great view up at the top. What do you think?"

What a noble soul, to not rub his undignified failure in his face. Just Lance shakily rose to his hooves, and took a few uncertain steps to make sure his footing would be fine before he set out on his next great adventure. When he seemed to be alright, he offered Kaiju a nod.
"I would like that a great deal, my friend!"
