[note: this takes place before Ganymede grew]

Ganymede was in that weird lull in between finishing all of his classes, and moving into the next year of school. It was a strange time - mostly because he didn't really have much of anything to keep him occupied since homework wasn't a thing. But, on the plus side, it did give him more time to think about what he wanted to do once he escaped the ever-watchful eyes of the caretakers and the incessant whining of Ella (and sometimes Foras). Well, not that being a junior would truly release him from prying eyes, but it was close enough.

He just had to decide what to do. As time had gone on, he'd gotten more and more interested in clothing. Specifically, drawing clothes and maybe even making them. The trouble was, he had no idea how to sew. So, it was to the library to look for some books. His search landed him a nice stack of basic how-to books for both sewing, and clothing design... he just had to find a place to sit.

As he was searching he couldn't help but grow annoyed as every table he came across was just... FULL of people! Why were they all here?! After another ten minutes of just looking for a place to sit in peace, he finally found a table with only one-- oh.

Great. He stared at the other geist at the table, eyes narrowed, mouth in a tight line as he considered the options. Go sit somewhere he wasn't supposed to... or sit at the table with Quilo. Granted, he'd never really spoken to Quilo, but he was one of Ella's posse and therefore was not on Ganymede's "tolerated" list. After a few more moments of internal debate, he decided to suck it up and marched on over to claim a seat at the other end of the table. There. That should be the end of it, right?

User ImageEver since his quest for his parents had begun in earnest, the library had become Quilo's second home. He practically lived there--when he wasn't living in the dorm, or at Tarin's house or...anywhere else, really. But when the girls needed some alone time--or he needed some alone time--he retreated to the library. He had some books to read, newspapers and magazines to review. Right now, he was studying the recent history of air travel on zeppelins and balloons. Specifically, he wanted to know what could go wrong on them. It was finals season and the library was packed full of people, so finding an empty seat for himself had been a real coup. And he desperately needed to be alone--the book he was reading was written for seniors, and not the sixteen year old kind of seniors--the college graduate kind of seniors. He honestly couldn't tell if he was understanding any of this, and he needed to be alone, without distractions, in order to figure any of this out. So when someone else came to sit at his table, he looked up from the book to tell them, gently but firmly, to go. Away.

But the sight of the other student made him purse his lips. Ganymede. He'd never formally met the other Geist, but he'd heard about him. Apparently he had some ongoing feud with Ella, which was something he'd never really understood. He'd been afraid to ask, no matter how hotly the curiosity burned within him. The older freshling didn't seem to have noticed him yet. He seemed to have a stack of books to read, so he probably didn't want to be disturbed...

But Quilo didn't want to be kept in the dark on something so important that it involved one of his friends. He leaned over and tapped the table next to Ganymede's hand. He didn't want to touch him--that would probably be unacceptable. But he did want to get his attention.

Ganymede had pulled the first book of his collection into position... Basics of hand sewing. It had some small projects he could work on in it, which was why he'd chosen it. He'd already opened up the front cover and was scanning over the contents when he noticed a tapping off to the side where... Quilo was. A visible rolling of irritated lights flashed through his markings. He'd never been one to be particularly emotive when he spoke, but oh, his body language was definitely expressive if one knew how to read it.

With a long sigh, he turned his eyes up from his book, locking them onto Quilo with a slightly narrowed stare. "What do you want, I'm busy." Ah yes, the best opener to a conversation. He was sure that if anyone that was supposed to look after him found out about that opener he'd get a lecture on manners, but Ganymede did not particularly care. He wanted to read his sewing book. He did not want to converse with one of the friends of Enemy #1. Well, no, Enemy #1 belonged to Tarin. Ella was more like Enemy #2. Either way, this kid knew both of them and therefore, Ganymede wanted nothing to do with him.

User ImageAnd yet it was that very fact, those two people he knew, which brought Quilo to talk to him. Quilo had heard a lot about Ganymede, but nothing specific. Just that he was a trouble-maker and tended to make Ella upset. He'd gotten it into his head that Gany might be a bully--but he hadn't yet heard anything specific enough to know if that was so. He needed confirmation. He was a researcher, after all! That's what he'd decided to be when he grew up. So he needed answers, and he needed confirmation. He couldn't afford to let misconceptions persist--he wanted Ganymede's side of the argument.

He watched the lightshow of teal markings flicker across the other Geist's face. His own cheeks glowed yellow with embarrassment, worry, and slight annoyance. He was only trying to understand the other freshling's point of view, after all... "I know you're busy, Ganymede," he said quietly. "I'm pretty busy myself. It's the library. Everyone here is busy. You've got some sort of feud going on with Ella that no one will tell me about. I was wondering what started it all. I'd like it from your perspective, if you'd please." Quilo braced himself for rejection. Anyone who replied that flatly to him was definitely the sort to rudely brush off such a personal question.

He eyed the blue boy, expression blank as always as he took in the question... A feud with Ella that no one would talk to him about. Sure. As if he bought that. He was sure Ella said all sorts of things, and if not Ella, probably Tarin. But whatever, he had to decide if he wanted to humor this intrusion or shut it down right then and there. Shutting it down risked getting into trouble... or more fights in the future... He just wanted to get out of his last few months in the freshling dorms without a hitch. So, humoring it was.

He sighed, resisting an eyeroll and sat up a little straighter. "Everyone else would say that I started it, but all I did was lay down ground rules that she wasn't to come near me, my stuff, or talk to me. Apparently I spoke too harshly or something so she started crying." He couldn't resist an eyeroll at that... "All I wanted was to be left alone and she just couldn't handle that, I guess. Too meddlesome." By that he was of course meaning that despite his clear declaring that he wanted to be left alone, both Foras and Ella proceeded to interact with him anyway. Therefore, they had started it.

User ImageQuilo sat back patiently as the other freshling answered his question. Okay. He had now heard one side of the story. Well, he had sort of heard two sides, but he was certain now that whether or not he had heard both sides of the story, he knew that neither side was telling the whole story. And even between the two, he was fairly certain that details were being left out. Quilo didn't like people picking on Ella. Ella was so shy, and so sweet, and so timid. She was just the sort of person to reach out to a boy with no friends. She had been rebuffed, and that should have been the end of it. And yet it had not--certainly not while Quilo still had his doubts. Because Quilo did not like it when people made Ella upset. He was going to keep picking at this until he could figure out a solution to make Ella happy and get her bully off of her back.

"I see. That would seem to be a reasonable request. But I am given to understand that you left a candy poo on Ella's pillow at Haunted Hallows." Quilo did not narrow his eyes. The yellow on his cheeks faded, though. His voice remained calm, even, and nonjudgmental. "I would like to know why, if you wished to be left alone by Ella, you provoked her." Well, technically he provoked me. Me and Tarin. But that's not the point...

He watched as the other boy mulled his response over, his own light show starting to die out into the occasional irritated flicker, but what was new? He always seemed to have at least a minor flash or two of irritation. The longer he considered, the calmer Ganymede began to feel... Maybe he actually was here to listen. That was new. It wasn't every day people were actually interested in his side of things...

And then the question about the poo. He was unable to resist a snort in response, amused that Quilo had overlooked the obvious answer there. "Well, one, she never actually stopped talking to me so all bets were off there. And two, it was Haunted Hallows, you're supposed to play jokes on people. It was a gummy. Foras got a turnip. It was only fair." He shrugged, tone as flat as always despite the animated hand gestures he was making to go along with his explanation. Ella had made several attempts to talk to him since their initial meeting, he had just decided that since she was going to keep talking, he might as well consider his initial demand ignored entirely.

User ImageThe snort offended Quilo, something clearly reflected in a flash of color from his cheeks. He took a deep breath after Ganymede finished his reply. His cheeks calmed down, but too soon--Quilo didn't yet have a response. He knew, vaguely, that he shouldn't let his emotions show so much. For one thing, other kids would take advantage of it. For another, and somewhat more important point, letting his emotions, especially anger or irritation, show would make him seem less impartial, more judge-y. He didn't want to be judge-y. He wanted to be understanding.

"So you figured that if she was going to keep bothering you, you might as well retaliate?" He said it in a calm, even voice, one that showed no judgement--only the need to listen and to comprehend. He made no acknowledgement of the pranks bit. He knew some people believed that Haunted Hallows meant a time for pranks, but he rarely interacted with those people. He didn't like pulling pranks--people rarely played them on him, but when they did, he found it actually rather bothersome. That wasn't really a nice thing to say as a Geist (or mostly-Geist), but it was true. He didn't like pranks. "So you have given up on cutting off contact with Ella, then? Because if you'd like, I could ask her to leave you alone."

Oh, he'd made him mad. At least, that looked like anger to Ganymede. His own markings often flashed like that when he was angry- so he could only assume it meant the same for Quilo. But just what exactly had he done to make him mad? A little ripple of light went through his own markings, signalling his confusion. Perhaps if Quilo could figure out his patterns, they'd see a little more eye-to-eye.

"Yeah I guess." He shrugged. That's basically what it was- or at least, he'd given up pretending he was ever going to get his way and was just. Interacting with her at this point. "And yeah, I guess. Even if you ask her not to talk to me she's gonna, it's just who she is. So I might as well get used to it and she might as well get used to what it's like to interact with me." He rolled his eyes, not really realizing the egotistical nature of what he'd just said. "So if you wanna get all mad about her crying like Tarin does, I don't care. Most of the time I can just look at her and she'll do the wibbly thing with the tears 'n stuff." He shrugged and sighed, Ella really had done that at least twice... He hadn't even meant to make her cry! Then again he'd only meant to do it like. Twice.

"But I suppose it was... nice... of you to offer." He was still getting used to this whole "thank people for making effort" thing, so hopefully that was good enough. Quilo wasn't going to get any better than that, anyway.

User ImageQuilo noticed the look of confusion that passed across the lights of the other Geist's face. Geists were easy to understand, or at least easier--compared to other races, at least. Litches were the hardest to read. That didn't mean that Quilo didn't try, though. Just as although he was beginning to understand why Tarin's dislike for Ganymede was so strong, he still wanted to try to like him. Or at least to tolerate him. He didn't like hating people. It was just so pointless, and it lead to too much misunderstanding.

"I see," he murmured. "That is a logical conclusion to reach. And yeah." He sighed. "That's definitely Ella in a nutshell. I like that about her, it's very endearing, but I can see how that would be...exhausting, if you just want to be left alone. I don't think being...I don't think playing tricks on her will make things better. Between you two, I mean." There didn't seem to be any end to Ganymede's arrogance, but he felt like he had to mend fences somehow. "I'll talk to her about it anyway, Ganymede. I might be able to have a different effect on her."

He shifted in his seat. "If you ever decide you need someone to talk to, Ganymede--I figure from what you've said you're probably a loner, so you probably don't need this, but, um, if you ever do need someone to talk to--yeah, you can talk to me." He looked away from the other Geist and turned his eyes to the page. "That's all. Sorry to have bothered you--I'll leave you alone now."

I think that's about it for my posts--Gany can say something more if he'd like.

Ganymede narrowed his eyes a little at the other boy, he'd been about to say something about "being" rather than "doing," but he wasn't going to press on it. He'd obviously thought better of it and changed his mind. "I'm not really interested in her being my friend so 'making things better' isn't exactly on my list of things do to." He shrugged again, and looked back to his book... then spared Quilo another glance as a few more ripples of confusion passed through his markings.

He was... offering to be someone to talk to?

Why? He was Ella's friend, and he'd just made it clear that he wasn't going to be particularly nice to Ella... So why offer? It didn't make any sense... Not even a little bit. "It's... fine. And sure. I guess. Maybe." He shifted a little to sit on the very far edge of his seat as if to put more distance between them. This was... suspicious and strange and he wasn't sure if Quilo was being particularly genuine, but... he didn't seem like the type to not be genuine.........

Ugh. He focused on his sewing books, deciding to block Quilo out for now until he was done reading.
