Ever since Quenton had started the Catfe, Colin had been supportive of his friend's business. He'd also decided - at some point - that having a cat of his own would be a good idea. Faust had also expressed approval of his choice to 'remove' one of the 'normal, stupid' cats from proximity with Quenton - and keeping Faust happy was important too.

It was with this in mind that he'd made arrangements to meet some of the older cats - not kittens - that his friend hosted in his cafe.

Colin had an appointment, as it were, but he still texted his friend to make sure it was a good day, a good time, for him to come by.

SMS Q-man
Is today still good to come by and meet some cats?

He already had a Star Trek themed scratcher at home, as well as permission to get a pet from his land lords. Something warm and fuzzy waiting for him at home might make life that much better.

By all means. You're on the schedule at the time you picked, everything is set- feel free to check in at the front with the part-timer, Elliot, then come on back into the VIP room to have some one on one time with each of the cats.

Quenton went about business as modifiedly usual, since having hired on extra help to cover hours and make life during the whole of October easier with having a cast. Today Elliot was in front, which left him free to tidy up the Cat Lounge and ensure there was a selection of favored feather teasers, approved treats, clean pillows and lap blankets stocked in the VIP Room. He double checked where each of the current cats were and gathered Montague into his left arm to take into the suite first. The cross-eyed tortoiseshell was the cuddliest of all the cats there, enjoying lap time or even just sitting with a heavy lean against any present human like a little magnet, which seemed like something that would endear Colin. And do the danseur well in the unconditional affection department. The long hours at the ballet were a concern, but that could wait for posing to Colin directly.

The sculptor settled in on one of the room-ringing couches, drew a blanket over his lap, and allowed the cat to settle into a contented puddle of purring, upside-down fluff.

SMS Q-man
Okay! Will do. Be around shortly.

Before leaving his apartment, Colin did one last check - he wasn’t certain he’d be bringing home a cat, but just in case it was best to be certain that he had all the things he might possibly need. The scratcher was cool, but it wasn’t everything of course - He had a nice litter box, toys, metal bowls for food and treats, a water fountain (he’d read that cats liked running water) and other important things. Because he knew he wanted to bring a cat into his home and being prepared was always the way to go.

The drive over was uneventful and he stepped into the Catfe with a smile on his face and his hands stuffed into the pockets of his red hoodie; he was dressed comfortably in soft, worn fabrics so he could hang out and concentrate on the cats, not worry about other things.

Elliot wasn’t an entirely unfamiliar face since he’d at least peeked in a few times since his hire, though really Colin was just a friendly person and wouldn’t have had a problem interacting with him even if he were 1) not an employee of the business 2) on the clock. Colin really was just generally that friendly and open. Once he’d checked in and made a bit of small talk, Colin headed towards the back where he was assured Quenton was waiting. “Hi!” Hugging Quenton wasn’t an option, as he was seated and had a cat in his lap, but the danseur thought about it. “You guys look comfortable.”

Smiling, the danseur came close and carefully settled himself onto the couch with Quenton and the cat. “Hey fur-face, quite the purr you’ve got there.” The temptation to just reach out and pet was resisted not because he didn’t want to do so, but to give the fluffball the option of observing - and smelling - him beforehand. “So, who’s this fluffy fellow? He's - er, she's? - gorgeous.”

Waiting was never an object in the presence of cats. Time passed uncounted, but for gentle strokes of mottled orange-black ruff. Then Colin appeared at the door like the sun given a body and every ounce of electron energy to burn off in the next hour.

"Tortoiseshell colouration genes are carried on the X chromosome, so most are female. In the rare case that a tortoiseshell is male, he has three chromosomes: two X's and a Y. This is Montague, who has been born to this husky, female frame. " Quenton flatted both his hands on the puffy flanks and wiggled the cat lightly by her center of gravity. Montague showed no signs of offense at this treatment, instead increasing the purring rumble and hand contact and squeezing her eyes pleasantly.

"She's three years old, spayed. She was given to the shelter by the family of her previous owner, an elderly man, who died last year. All shots had. Almost entirely an indoor life, though she accompanied the gentlemen outdoors for gardening. We have other cats, of course, but she seemed a good possible first try. While you're being very polite and proper, like yourself, she doesn't need so much introduction." As Colin was seated, Quenton lifted the cat from her lean on himself and set her laying, like a well-pleased sack, on Colin's lap. She sniffed at the danseur's hands. Then licked his pants once before rolling to be upside down.

"And, naturally, you can rename the cats. This one isn't so bad, but usually those the shelter gives are mind-numbingly insipid. "

"How have you been?"

The technical response given his question of the cat’s gender from Quenton was interesting and not at all surprising; he absorbed what he was told with a smile and a nod, long used to the manner in which his friend spoke and acted. “Seems really easy going.”

With Montague placed into his lap, Colin’s smile went degrees brighter. She was a warmly purring weight pinning his thighs and soft under hands that smoothed belly fluff and tickled at visible toe beans. “Cat’s are fantastic, aren’t they? Aren’t you?” Yes, he was cooing at the cat, but who wouldn’t with such an inviting set up? He gave her bared chin some scritches, amused by the way her paws flexed and tail thumped against his jeans. Not as fluffy as Faust, but still a rounded fluff-ball, I wonder what Ash would think of her.

“I can imagine.” Insipid. Good word for it. Shelters were usually more interested in quickly processing animals to get them out onto the adoption floor than deep contemplation of names; Colin had heard they often just picked names in batches depending on the amount of animals. Really though, Montague wasn’t the worst…he would probably change the name of whatever cat he got, just because, but if not…some names were certainly better than others. “When we were little, we had a cat from the shelter they called Tijuana. My sister renamed her Kitty.” It had been a long time ago and the cat had only lived a few years with them before they’d had to have her put down.

“I’ve been pretty good, I’m only dancing one show this season, so I’ve got more down time. And I’m not being an idiot anymore.” Of course, Colin was still pushing himself, but no more than any other principle danseur would have…and he certainly wasn’t being an utter idiot as he’d been when Hver had tattled and sicced Quenton on him. Sitting so still was difficult, so the danseur picked Montague up and cuddled her to his chest, bouncing his leg a bit now that he was free to do so.

“What about you? Seems like business is going well.”

"She is, which I thought a plus for someone who might be in and out a lot, and who might have company over on occasion- she gets along with the other cats fine, but is fine being alone as well. Smart enough to entertain herself with shadows, window sitting, bird watching, dust bunny chasing. Dumb enough that being alone won't end in toilets flushed a hundred times, phones answered by cats, or sudden house renovation due to a feline stuck in a wall. "

"She hasn't shown any tendency to gorge on food left out, either. Her weight is mostly a factor of too much sunbathing and not enough playing chase. " The report of lessened idiocy was entertaining, if all the more that Colin had deemed it necessary to include so specifically. Like holding up a certificate of reprieve to a jailer to prove pardon had been given in the certainty that physical evidence and word were not enough. Maybe they aren't. The friendship has been damaged in that way, because of me. It is a small price, the better assurance that he is healthy and a greater statistic to survive a fight. Not a surety. There is no surety in this game the universe plays with us. "Honestly, I like cats a bit hefty. But you could work out with your own new furry overlord if they needed a diet or not. "

"The novelty period has worn off, but business remains very good. Being walking distance from the university was a perfect choice. We have more holistic and dietary-specific options than mainline coffee shops, and there's the cats. So competition has been almost a non-problem. As far as the students and professors seem concerned, if they're spending four dollars for a latte anyway they'd rather do it someplace with stringent concerns for the environment, fair trade, and some fluffy entertainment. If I can find a third staff member, there's been a lot of requests for extended hours into the late night for study sessions. It might be something to do limitedly, such as during the two weeks of midterms and the two of finals. I'll have to see. "

Quenton leaned to the table and opened the portfolio there that had scrapbooked pages of each of the current cats and paged along to a marmalade looking car with white socks on two of its feet as well as a white mustache marking. " would you like a feather teaser to play? She'll cuddle for hours given the chance- so if you want to see her play you'd have to convince her of it. Or did you want to meet another? This one here, Charlie, was the other one I thought a good possibility for you."

Quenton had clearly thought about what sort of cat would work best in the sort of environment Colin could provide (probably more for the benefit of the cat than Colin) but it was still pleasing that his extremely capable friend had his - and the kitty's - back. "That's important, especially with my cousin living with me right now. He's a really nice guy though, so I don't think this one--" Colin gently jiggled Montague's fuzzy belly with one hand, "Will have much of a problem with him either." The mental images sliding through Colin's mind at the various scenarios Quenton put forth set the curly haired danseur to laughing into the cat's soft belly. "Having a cat answering the phone wouldn't be so bad, but I think my landlords would prefer no impromptu 'renovations'.

Their relationship had changed, but Colin wasn't upset with the changes - if anything, he was grateful for what Quenton had done for him (to him?), even if the doing meant he'd been a goddamned idiot to earn it. And he certainly didn't seem to feel any animosity or even trepidation around the scarred proprietor of the Catfe. "Well, I think she's wonderful as she is...and if she's healthy like this..." He saw no reason to put her on a diet, though maybe his new feline overlord would slim up with attention from two handsome men? "If she loses weight playing, that's fine, but I think I'd be sad if she lost too much fluff."

Hearing about the Catfe's success, even past the 'honey-moon' period, made Colin smile brightly and rubbed his cheek against Montague's fur, marveling at the softness and the low rumbling purr. "If I can help at any time, just let me know." It really was too bad he couldn't offer to be one of Quenton's staff, but dance was his life and while he was one-hundred percent willing to help his friend out, he wasn't about to trade careers. It's so amazing to me, I know such successful, amazing people. How did I get so lucky? Is this how Björn felt? A bit in awe that someone like this could be a confidant?

"I'd love to meet him, for the sake of meeting and playing with another cat, but really...I think I've fallen in love with this lovely lady." Shouldn't I give the other cat a chance? He's adorable looking, with that mustache! But she feels like the right weight in my arms, and her little squinchey face is irresistable. Quenton felt either of these two could be a good match... While Colin was unsure about whether or not he should give the handsome Charlie a try, playing with Montague could definitely be a fun proposition, so at the very least he'd take Quenton up on the feather toy. "Let's see if I can convince her to play a bit. Are the feather toys something she's been interested in? What about kickers?" As it stood, Montague didn't seem inclined to do more than lay in Colin's arms, paws spreading and closing against his shirt and the air as she purred upside-down in Quenton's direction as though he too should be giving her affection.

Which, of course, he should have been doing. The useless human.

“Far be it from me to impede on her when she has you in her tractor beam. “ A quick reach was all that was needed practically anywhere in the CatFe, with a lean, and Quenton offered out a turkey-feather teaser for Colin’s use.

“Did you want to take her home today, which you can, adopt but pick up tomorrow or later this week, or some other arrangement? The adoptions paperwork and process is dictated by the shelters who provide our puffs. It's $50 for cats older than 2, and $75 for younger ones. None of our cats are younger than 10 weeks. It can all be done with a tablet. Verification of home ownership or if you rent we will need a copy of your lease stating that your landlord permits you to have pets along with your landlord’s signature and contact information. “

“That is all to assure that the animals aren't going to be abandoned. All adopters must complete an application form, which will credit check you, all adopters must be at least 21 years of age. If you have any animals already in your household, they must be spayed or neutered and have proof papers of vaccinations. All household members must be present prior to the finalization of an adoption, so if you have roommates they will need to confirm approval. Adoptions can only be approved to households within a 75 mile radius of our address, further locations would have to inquire with the shelters themselves. "

"We have little one-sheets on each of the cats, things like favorite toys, preferred foods and treats, and information about where they came from if they had prior owners. " A quick turn to the correct page for Montague, and pulling it out, provided that her favorite toy was the peak-a-prize puzzle. “She’s played with kickers, but usually only for immediately after they’re tossed on the floor. Then after she’s kicked them they are ‘dead’ until you or someone manually picks them up and tosses them again. “

" Each adoption comes with a beginner’s checklist and a soft-side, messenger-style sport carrier if you'd like one. Or we have temporary, recyclable cardboard carriers for take homes. “

Was that a Star Trek joke he detected? Colin grinned over at Quenton while setting Montague down in his lap to see if perhaps he could get the fluffy feline to engage in play rather than snuggles. It was uncertain, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t try, or that he would be upset when the calico only lazily batted at it and gave him more of those ‘come hither-and-pet-me’ looks.

As the danseur wiggled the teaser, Quenton spoke about the more practical side of things: how the adoption would go, when Colin wanted to bring his new girlfriend home…all that fun stuff. “I think it’d be best if we did the paperwork today and she came home with me tomorrow…that’ll give me time to set everything up.” And to gush about Montague to Khaleel. The adoption fee wasn’t anything to worry about, and really he had everything he’d need already at his apartment…but still. “Whatever’s necessary, it’s not a problem.” He already had a copy of his lease updated with permission to have up to two cats (mostly because Colin rather often had Mauvian houseguests).

“Do I need to get Khaleel here? He’s technically only staying on my couch until he gets his own place, but it wouldn’t be a problem to bring him up tomorrow to sign things. We have talked and he's excited about having a cat to share my couch with.”

There was quite a bit of information coming at him, but it wasn’t as though he hadn’t expected this - he’d even done some research online beforehand, wanting to know the sorts of things he’d need to adopt a cat and give it a good home. “Oh wonderful, I’ll pick one of these up tonight then, so she’ll have it when she comes home tomorrow.” The listing on food and treats was also useful since at the moment he had only a small bag of Halo-brand kibble (buying a large amount before knowing what sort of cat would be coming home with him, or what allergies/needs said kitty might have had seemed ridiculous).

“The carrier would be good, I wanted to wait on buying one until I knew how big it’d need to be.” Montague pinned the teaser down with paw and then head, rolling her belly back up to Colin for affection, which he gladly gave. “That’s a lot to remember, you go through this every time someone wants to adopt a cat? Incredible.” No matter how many times he was reminded just how smart his friend was, it always struck the danseur as something incredible and worth commentary, possibly because each time he had to pause to think about how lucky he was to have a friend like Quenton.

I think with filling of papers talk, we can probably move to close soon? :3

"Since he's not on the lease, he's not legally able to make decisions about the upkeep and space, so there's no need to involve him in the process officially. You've already talked, and have confirmation as far as social obligations, and that's enough for courtesy sake. " Quenton stood carefully, so as not to startle Montague.

"I'll get the necessities from the front for filling out. Maybe you'll be spared a hand for the purpose instead of petting. It isn't any more complicated remembering the logistics than any other service industry. Going through it each time makes it easier to recall, really. "

"I can bring some drinks back as well. " A cousin on a couch was an unexpected boon for social living, but as the dancer mentioned, it was a temporary arrangement. Having a cat around would help buffer the loss for the overt, energetic man. She might not be a person, but she could well be the Queen of his domain in short time, and eclipse many negative, depressive pathways with a good purr and whiskered demands. He hoped.
