This is a private, solo RP for Nisshou H's Xerxes. The events in this story immediately follow the events I wrote for my entry into the contest I won him in. Please note that the mers mentioned in this RP are not the same ones as the ones in the contest. These are NPC mers.

The sun was setting and it was taking its sweet time doing it. Xerxes watched its procession through squinted eyes from his place on the beach of an utterly abandoned island. He hated the sun more and more each time it set because that meant it had been yet another day since he had been stranded there with no chance of rescue. There was food on the island, plenty of it with his only company being small animals, and even a small fresh water spring to keep him hydrated. All in all it was a nice place to be stranded but that didn’t mean he wanted to be there.

Xerxes had been tricked. It was shameful how easily he had been tricked too. He’d just been so enthralled to see creatures of myth brought to life that they’d blinded him to their real intentions. True it had only been the one mermaid that had dragged him out here under false pretenses but he had little doubt in his mind that the two had somehow been in cahoots anyway. They’d played him for a fool and he’d been trying to do the honorable thing. Xerxes snorted. Well he certainly wouldn’t be doing anything that stupid with mermaids again. They would be regarded with exactly as much suspicion as they deserved lest they do something far more dastardly than strand him on a deserted island next time.

The light was fading. It was time for Xerxes to stop glaring at his time measure and retreat to his shelter for the night. The mermaid that had brought him here would almost certainly be back in the morning and if he continued to be his charming self she may even let him leave the next day. He could only hope to be so fortunate.

Night had fallen once again and Xerxes still found himself stranded on the god awful dinky island that he’d been hoping to get off of just that morning. True to her routine the mare had come back at dawn for her weekly visit. She’d even brought him “treats” from the mainland. They had been made inedible thanks to the sea water but he had thanked the devilish mer-mare all the same. He’d done his best to be all smiles and flattery as the mare went about swimming and playing and telling stories just like they were both there of their own volition. He was really beginning to think that he had a chance of convincing her to let him go back but as soon as he broached the subject she balked.

You’ll just go back to my sister.” She had told him before blowing bubbles in the surf. It hadn’t mattered how much he protested her claims. There was no way he’d go back to her sister. If he had his way he’d never go within a hundred feet of a mermaid again. He’d honestly rather die. The mare was too far trapped in her own delusions to see the truth of things, though, and without another word she disappeared beneath the surface of the ocean with no promise to return next week as she normally gave him.

Xerxes could have beaten the slowly rising moon out of the sky if he could have reached it. Instead he settled for cursing the mer-mare’s existence loudly with colorful language that would have made his proper mother’s mane go white. He was so worked up that he didn’t hear the rustling of feathers or the soft clicking of something landing on the rocks behind him.

“Ya look like you’re in trouble.”

The sudden female voice startled him badly enough that he started choking on his own spittle. He whirled about to see who had spoken and found himself looking at a mare with a dusty pink mane and an amused smirk on her tan colored lips. There was a large red butterfly on her chest and a large silver ring attached to one of many cords around her throat. She looked relatively normal even if she did have a rogue’s smile. He cleared his throat.

“I am in a bit of a tight spot, yes.” He said keeping a close watch on her laughing eyes. “I’ve been stranded in this place and cannot get home. You see I’m from the manila-”

“Can you shrink?”

The mare interrupted him in the middle of his sentence, in the middle of his word even. She had no manners whatsoever but she was fair enough in looks if not in temper. He could abide some rudeness if she were to be helping him out of his pickle.

“Yes, I can shrink. Perhaps not as well as others with purer blood than mine but I am perfectly capa-”

“Good, hop on and hold on.”

Again he had been interrupted. He scowled slightly not liking the way she bossed him around but seeing as she was his only chance at salvation he abided. Focusing his energy he managed to make himself smaller and smaller until he was roughly the size of a small squirrel. It was the best he could do being only half flutter. In this size his tiny, frail wings were able to lift him into the air and onto the mare’s back. He hooked his forelegs into the cords at the mare’s neck and bit into another to secure himself and just in time too. Barely three seconds after he’d landed on the mare’s back she’d taken off again with a peal of wild laughter. He would have cursed her if she had not immediately turned to head back to his home. He was free from the island and the horrible mare and he would never see her or any of their kind again.

Getting back to the continent had been a wild ride. The weather conditions had been perfect, by all rights it should have been a smooth flight, provided of course that the mare giving him a ride hadn’t been a lunatic. She flew faster than Xerxes knew was possible and seemed to enjoy trying to make him upset his stomach all over her back with every lurching dive or turn she made. She had been laughing the entire way but Xerxes had kept his mouth firmly shut out of fear that he would bite his tongue off in the middle of lecturing the fool mare. She had been lovely enough that he’d been willing to trust her intentions and travel with her. He regretted that decision entirely up until they finally touched down.

Sluggishly he untangled his legs from the cords around the mare’s neck. He stood on her back for a moment trying to get his bearings again but it felt like the entire world was tilting about beneath him. He really was going to be sick after all. Moving far more quickly than he thought possible in his current state, Xerxes fluttered off the mare’s back and behind a large rock to offer him some privacy. Once there the contents of his stomach emptied onto the sandy ground until there was nothing left in his belly but bile.

When he had finished retching he emerged from his hiding place to find the mare still standing there. He thought, perhaps, that she was there to offer him some sympathy and an apology for her rough treatment. One look at her smug face told him that he was dead wrong. She quipped something about him not being much of a flyer. He forced himself to turn and leave with no word of thanks. It was better than staying; if he had stayed he would have spat on her good will and cursed her existence. Oh yes, she looked fair but he could see now that she was every bit as foul as his sister was, it was just hidden by a layer of beauty. He shook his head angrily. Why couldn’t these beauties come with a warning sign?
