The hunting party was staying in a village for a time, restocking and recuperating from the strenuous Blood Moon hunts. There'd been dragons and monsters and all sorts of wonderful beasts to hunt. Not nearly enough though Laesara thought, shaking out her hunting clothes as she hung them out to air, The bloodlust in my heart is not yet sated... but it could, at least, wait until after her bath.

Water felt good on sweat-grimed skin and, though the inn didn't have much to offer in the way of luxury, it provided what it could to it's noble guests and Laesara and her father didn't mind a little bit of roughing it.

After her bath, she checked her bandages (a few minor injuries, scrapes, and abrasions here and there) and dressed in slightly nicer travel clothes, and then took a walk. Of course, her weapon and bonded were with her, but she did not anticipate trouble in this idyllic little village with its modest expanses of farmland...

That is, of course, until some of the crops began to move. At first, Laesara thought it was just the rustling of the wind, and leaned against a fence to watch... but then, she realized they were approaching with malicious intent.

“Well.” she commented, amused, as she took out her boomerang and watched their approach, “That's new.”

She'd decided she wasn't interested in taking on any more of Mother's chores for her mate. Days spanned, and Luka felt a blossoming disconnect for her father. He'd scorned her- told her the things she thought were wrong, that it wasn't becoming of a beautiful young woman to pretend, or perhaps worst of all and his most recent offense; that she was a liar. She said she'd seen dragons, told him, quite excitably in fact, that she'd slain dragons. Nyro did not believe her. In the great span of his imagination, her father had come to the conclusion that she'd stolen them from her mother, of all people. It was hardly Luka's fault if he was a boring, plain, insufferable old man who couldn't fathom that his one and only daughter was clearly also a gifted fighter.

If nothing else, this should be well within the realm of possibility. The most noble of ladies were always capable of defending their kingdoms, and so she had. Superbly. The thanks she received? Being told she was a thief and a liar.

Luka could not deal with Nyro right now, and her mother's assurances that he didn't 'mean' anything by it were not as heartwarming as they ought to have been.

Instead, Luka wandered away from her home, away from Ashen City, toward no real destination. Her feet carried her where they would, and the young Orderite busied herself with mimicking bird calls, giving shapes to patterns of light as they fell through the tree leaves and landed on the ground, and hopping from stone to stone so that the grassy "river" path would not sweep her away.

There was a small and quaint farming village an hour's walk to the south. Mama preferred to pick up produce here rather than in the city. She claimed they tasted fresher and didn't have a sooty aftertaste. Luka traveled with her many times to collect provisions for the kingdom. Without so much as realizing it, she found herself strolling along the outskirts of a low wooden fence guarding a decent expanse of deep green shrubbery that frolicked in the wind. It didn't immediately strike her as odd until a splash of bright orange moved in, combat-ready.

Luka blinked and tipped her head. It was a girl. Or a woman. With a boomerang and a purple lizard creature. Even as she slipped through the gap in the fence and moved to approach, she could tell this would be how another of her 'lies' began.

As a ranged warrior, faced with moving, animated produce, Laesara saw a perfect (if strange) opportunity for target practice. “Hold, Aestival.” she commanded her bonded, who practically vibrated at her side. There were many vines about the field, and what if Aestival became tangled in them? Or if the creatures controlled vines? That would be very difficult to manage. ”Hold” he did so reluctantly. She could feel him straining against her will, longing to charge forward and lay into the vines with his claws and fangs. It is only a matter of time before he can no longer resist that urge she knew... so she would have to level the playing field before he decided to make himself into a pumpkin pie.

Her weapon cackled at the terrible joke as she threw it, arcing it through the field and right into one of the creature's bulbous heads. It smashed through the vegetation, spewing a plant-y mimicry of gore across the field in the form of pumpkin guts and seeds and green sap, before cutting through a few of the vines on it's return. One down... Laesara thought, as her boomerang returned to her hand. How many to go? It was hard to tell as they approached, vines dragging. Did she count by head or by cluster?

Either way, this was quite fun.

Aestival thrashed as her boomerang struck the plant beast, longing to tear it apart, plant or no. In his frustration, he caught sight of their observer, his tail lashing in uncertainty. She appeared to be approaching – help or harm? The beast turned to face her – away from his tantalizing distraction – and barked a challenge. “Who goes there?”

Laesara ignored him and prepared for another throw...

Luka blinked in startlement. The lizard creature- it spoke. Her brows shot up, a smile tugging the corner of her lips, despite the older woman swinging about a weapon and attacking common shrubbery just ahead. Delightful! And yet- Also peculiar. She tipped her head. What even was the purple creature? Too small to be a dragon, unless it was an infant. It kind of looked like one. Though she'd never heard of dragons speaking the common tongue.

She dipped lower and hedged a few paces closer before reaching out her hand. Not close enough to touch, but hopefully not so far that it would discourage the scaly specimen from approaching her. It had sounded so on-edge. Surely not because of her. It wasn't as if Luka would do it any harm.

"Hello," she murmured softly, as though she were speaking to a small child. Her fingers stretched out a bit closer. "You don't have to sound so rude. My name is Luka. I live... close enough to here to say I know the area well enough." She tipped her head back to fix questioning salmon-irises on Lae. "I haven't ever seen fighting plants before."

Aestival, of course, needed to do his due diligence. Warily, he sniffed at her outstretched hand, finding nothing suspicious or threatening. He haruumphed a sound of allowance. “I am not rude.” he said, by way of explanation. “I protect my mistress.”

As if I need protecting. Laesara thought, allowing herself the wisp of – perhaps foolish – pride as the boomerang crashed, easily, through the plants again. She caught it on it's return, turning briefly to the newcomer. “Nor have I.” she said, regarding the still-advancing mass of plants, “I suspect that it is the blood moon's doing, of course – it empowers strange things.” She threw again. Yes. Strange and fascinating things. This throw was not so effective, bruising what appeared to be a... Laesara could not identify the plant's species through the vines. The boomerang returned. “I take it, Ms. Luka, that this is not a usual occurance?” She threw again – another good strike. “I am Laesara W...” she paused, contemplating briefly, a sudden thought occurring to her.

Maybe, just maybe... she thought, It would be nice to take off the mask. If there was any time that she could drop her noble air, this would be it – killing pumpkins was not a noble sort of hunt. “Laesara.” she said, feigning that her pause was only to focus on catching the boomerang. In truth, it required little focus – Jiae was tethered to her, quite literally, via their bond and via actual magic. Laesara could not miss a catch if she tried. She turned. “But you may call me Lae. And he is Aestival, my bonded.”

Aestival nodded his assent, sitting back on his haunches, practically writhing in impatience.

“Have you a weapon?” she asked Luka, smiling friendlily, “I'm afraid I cannot offer you mine – it's bonded – but if you would like some target practice, I wouldn't want to destroy all of your targets before you had a go.”

'Aestival.' It was a strange name for a strange creature, but Luka decided she quite liked the idea of a baby dragon 'bonded' to follow her around and protect her. It called Laesara its 'mistress,' and somehow this seemed acceptable too. She wondered if she'd be allowed to touch it. Somehow, the little beast didn't exactly seem enthused by her. So with a quiet scoff of her own, Luka let her hand drop away and rose back to her full height. She was likely only half as much in age of the other woman, and her size showed it.

She crossed her arms behind her back, blinking up at Lae unwaveringly and fearlessly. The plants were strange, but they might not even be dangerous. They were just garden vegetables, after all. And if they were something to be feared, than the dawn-haired woman was doing a good job at keeping them at bay. There wasn't much Luka could do to aid her efforts, and after scrutinizing the 'enemy' through narrowed eyes, decided that much didn't matter. "No, not usually, I suppose." Though maybe they only attacked things that looked dangerous, like baby dragons. They didn't have need to attack a young Orderite girl.

She wondered if one day, she might also attack plants as 'target practice.' "No," Luka huffed softly. "My daddy doesn't think I'm ready for one. But I-" She glanced around, found a short stick a few feet away, and ran to claim it. "-I think I'm more than ready!" She pointed her stick towards the 'enemy' at hand. "I am Luka Lafier, a dark witch. And the Blood Moon gives me power too! Zap!" She shouted at the spot Lae's boomerang had just mangled a pile of vines.
