Fingers curled around her artifact. Not fastened to her arm like usual, but clutched between two weak hands. Her body coiled around it like a reptile to a heat source. She debated leaving for a while, just leaving. But it brought back memories of Merlin and the artifact was discarded in favor of a pillow she could press into her cheek.

Memories seemed to be the hot topic of the day today.

She waited, patiently, with some guitar riffs playing in the background. No Nikki Minaj or Jack's soft acoustics today; she wanted metal and brass, long guitar solos with no point and the crash of cymbals at the end.

It was eerily silent. At first she hadn't been sure why, but then she realized it was from the absence of Tenebrae. At least last time she'd gotten his words. He wasn't a talkative weapon by any means, but he still filled spaces with a quiet buzz, a small insult, a little voice. Now it was quiet, and it quieted her too.

Not long after he'd told her he'd be coming over, Jack had the absolute pleasure of having to deal with three people waking up at once: because that was just his sort of ******** luck these days, apparently. In a foul mood afterwards, he'd taken to stalking about on his jogging path to cool off until he felt more level-headed (or at the very least, more tired and inclined to lie down); he was going to need it.

Once he was at her door, he almost just walked straight in. But now he had to pause, consider it (had she locked the door?), and knock first, and it was just one more strange accommodation for Chel's current state.

"S'me," he announced before he produced his own version of the key and let himself in.

Had he just walked in she wouldn't have minded. Chel tried to remember to lock the door when she was out, but when she was in it was fair game for anyone.

Regardless, she noted he had a key. That was probably something she should have known.

Upon his arrival she did poke her head up from under the nest of pillows. She wasn't necessarily in a bad mood, in fact she even had a smile. But there was something off about it, a little dimmer than usual. "Hey." He looked pent up, like a coiled spring about to launch even if he was sweaty and clearly trying to keep his cool. "It can wait f'you wanna shower. You hungry? I think there's some snacks in that left cupboard."

Did he look worse than he thought? Damn it.

"Yeah, lemme just..." He kicked off his shoes at the entrance and went to go dump his bag on the couch. She looked better, at least. No feisty commentary or kiss, but he'd take it.

"How's non-infirmary life going?" he asked as he began to unpack his things: the usual that he brought to the lab, a borrowed runic laptop, charger, several folders and a dull-looking book.

"Very excitin'. Lots of looks and whispers," she gave it a little jazz hands, like that would spice up what she was saying.

All things she was used to. "You?" The laptop and bag all looked very fancy and important. Was his work something she should know about?

That was the worst part of it all. Doubt had set it and she felt the incessant need to question everything as though it had some importance in the grand scheme of things. His kicking off shoes at the entrance- was that a habit? The bag being on the couch- was that where he usually put it?

"Long day," he replied tiredly, sighing through his nose. "I'll be glad to get off my feet." There were things far more draining than the physical.

Still, it was nice to see the jazz hands. He couldn't help but perk a little.

"I can try to cook if the snacks won't cut it," Jack offered as he began to slip his shirt off on the way to the shower. And if she felt like hazarding it after getting next to nothing for quite a while. "Think there's enough to do mac n' cheese or something easy..."

Even with her memories gone, Chel was still in tact. There were still sarcastic quips and a lecherous look at his physique, even if what was bouncing around in her skull was something completely more frustrating.

"Sure why not," she told him without the usual jab at his cooking skills. "Go shower though. Nobody likes sweaty cheese."

He really needed to sort out what she did and didn't remember, because god damn it was weird not hearing an insult at the offer. Chel was rewarded with a sweaty cheese shirt being tossed at her before he hit the shower.

He emerged not long after, feeling a little better after a shower (quick and cleansing) but still weary; maybe they really would be saved from his cooking.

"You said you wanted to talk?" he prompted as he moved to the closet to grab some pajamas.

She hadn't said she wanted to talk.

She said she needed to talk.

"Yeah," she said, eyes following him around the room as she remained relatively limp in bed. Her first day back had her tired already, and her wounds still weren't fully healed so she didn't want to move them too much. She had the energy to be functional, but the attitude and time were missing.

She waited to see his actions first.

He gave her a few minutes in case it took time to wind up the nerve, slipping on an Alice in Chains shirt and boxers in the meantime. When she still didn't speak up after he'd toweled his head off a second time, he decided to take initiative.

Jack opened the fridge first to grab several water bottles as well as some snacks from their stash. The mac and cheese dream was starting to feel more and more like a polite offer than a legitimate one. "Anything in particular?" he asked as he moved to take a seat by her nest of pillows.

For once, Chel was fine with just snacks. She wasn't feeling all that hungry anyways.

Instead of speaking, she fumbled her hands through the blankets and sheets, looking for her phone she'd lost within their endless waves. When she finally found it, she held it up to him. It was open to their DM, somewhere far, far up in the conversation, but if Jack wanted to he could click around and see a DM open with Gretchen (recent) and Abbi, Dawson and Chris (less recent).

"Who are they." A statement, not a question. The first step towards solving a problem was having the balls to admit there was one.

Something methodical like this, he could handle. Maybe giving her information would trigger something.

He started by tapping Gretchen's photo, scooting so that he could angle it to let her see. "Gretchen, Death division trainee. Sometimes you let her shadow you. I know you're friends because you tried to suggest having a threesome to me once." He scoffed almost affectionately. "Robot sex or whatever."

Next was, "Dawson, but I call him Fatass since he is. You friendzoned him. Annoyingly cheerful.

"Abbi is..."
Jack had to think of how to put it. "She's like a bratty little sister-friend combo, but she's...a good person. I guess." He wasn't used to giving out all these compliments. "A good heart if nothing else."

And finally, "This is Chris, your cousin. You two are really close, though he pretty much hates my guts for a variety of reasons. But he really cares for you, so there's that."

Chel leaned forward as he talked and by the time he got to Abbi she had one arm around his waist, cheek against his thigh. The pictures ... were foreign. Names, personalities- they were all strangers.

"I ... don't have a cousin," she said quietly. "Feels like I woke up as the wrong person ..."

He almost forgot not to stroke her hair and instead touched her back.

"You're still you," he insisted. "But since I never asked: what do you remember exactly?"

"I don't remember anythin' 'cause I didn't forget nothin'," Chel said, glaring at his thigh like it was the source of all of her problems.

She couldn't explain the ridiculous frustration that came in not feeling like things were lost. She was as she was, as she always had been. It was like someone telling you you had a sister (or in her case, a cousin, a friend, a friendzoned ex) and not only thinking but knowing it wasn't true. It wasn't you.

"I had a dream though."
