Horseback riding - Having grown up with his family on a large plot of land, the Whybournes had a stable full of horses for Basil's convenience. He grew up knowing how to take care of them as well as ride, and has his own horse still there. There isn't much opportunity for riding in the middle of a crowded city, but Basil goes when he can and he still has a great love of horses and everything associated with them.
Cooking - He is rather adept at fending for himself, and cooking is no exception. Basil has done a great deal of cooking all throughout his childhood and teenage years, more often than not being the one to provide sustenance to his rather large family. He takes risks, often including ingredients that are questionable and possibly dangerous (such as puffer fish and blood clams), mostly because he likes taking risks in this sort of way (he doesn't ever consider it an actual risk).
Light and Sound - Basil is in college for journalism, but his passion for anything audio/visual has stemmed from several classes taken in high school. He was on the tech team for all of the school plays, as well as one or two in college, and is always found backstage or in the sound box, in control of all the lights and sounds for whatever production is occurring. This is his official job; he earns money by taking lighting gigs.
Virtues:
Truthful - Ever careful of how his words and actions are taken, Basil has taught himself to be respectful and honest and he does not lie. He fails to see the point in anything other than honesty; lies are both unbecoming and pointless, but this doesn't mean that he's cruel. When he finds no need to share the truth, he doesn't say anything at all, following the whole rule of "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything" as best he can.
Cautious - He's not reckless, nor quick to anger. He takes his time when coming across things, and he never dives into anything without a great deal of thought behind it. Basil is rational in every sense of the word, and will go to great lengths to make sure that whatever decision he makes is the right one.
Curious - He is a naturally curious person in general, both about people and about life. The interest he shows when speaking to others is often times entirely genuine, and he is a very sincere person all around. He enjoys very much being able to learn about whatever it is that he can, whether it's a person, place, or thing.
Flaws:
Pushy - Hand in hand with his natural tendency towards curiosity is Basil's inability to control himself sometimes in terms of experimenting. He's cautious and careful, but he will press harder and harder to learn what he can about something, sometimes to the point of being overbearing or irritating. He doesn't always understand when to let things go.
Brooding - He holds onto things, sometimes too hard and too much. He's not generally good at understanding when a good time to back off is, and he lapses into periods of sulking or intense broodiness when he doesn't get the knowledge he wants, or doesn't get what he wants out of life or someone else. It's a very childish habit, one he is mostly ignorant of.
Self-absorbed - The reason for Basil's ignorance and brooding is his failure to see beyond himself sometimes. He is often too intent on pursuing whatever it is that he's after that he doesn't notice anything else that's going on, too concerned with his own self and his own thoughts. Basil is not a bad person, he just is too wrapped up in his own head for his own good.
