The walk with Ciel had been reassuring, but Evan was still making heads and tails of things. They had snuck into the kitchen, away from the crowded bar.
Evan seemed significantly more comfortable in his own kitchen; once the doors were closed he slung his bag back down on the ground and began to pull out a few pans.
He paused when Ciel sat on the counter and wrinkled his nose, but said nothing of it.
"I'm still figuring out what I want to ask you about, you know, that other stuff, but...let me start with an easy one. Do you want grilled cheese and some soup? That's a quick one, fifteen minutes. There's still a lot of ingredients lying around. --Oh, or do you want some chili instead of soup? That's nice and warm. And it's been going all day so it oughta be good by now," he said, going over to a little crock pot and peering into it.Aurelius Ambrosius Please let me know if this is okay!

Kyuseisha no Hikari It looks good to me heart Under normal circumstances Ciel would have probably realized it was a bit rude to just sit on a counter like that but she was still in her patrolling mindset and wasn't really thinking about manners.
"Chili sounds good." She said with a smile.
"Just ask what ever comes to mind. I'll answer to the best of my knowledge." She replied.

Evan nodded; he moved to fetch a serving bowl and cutlery and scooped out a good portion of chili before presenting it to her. He moved back to the stove and got it turned on before bustling about and getting materials for a grilled cheese.
Though there was a very industrial looking refrigerator, full still of raw ingredients, he produced a can of Dr. Pepper, looked at it thoughtfully, and then asked, "—Do you want one? We have other drinks, too, but this is my stash so we wouldn't have to go out to the bar for anything."
He didn't necessarily wait for an answer and stood in front of the fridge as he waited for an answer, but asked a string of more important questions—ones he had been mulling over. "Where do you come from? I mean, all that magic stuff. And who decides if you get to be all…fancy and magical? Can it happen to anyone or do you have to be, you know. Special?"

"Sure." She said in response to the drink offer.
She mulled his questions over in her head for a bit. "Well the simplest answer is that we all come from earth, normal people just like you before we awaken to our powers. The more complex answer is that a thousand years ago knights and senshi were spread throughout galaxy protecting many civilizations throughout the stars however a terrible rebellion was started on Earth by the Negaverse and the galaxy ultimately fell. However now we're reawakening here on Earth to fight that ancient battle again." She wondered if she was making sense.
"As for who gets to decide who gets to be powered. Well that depends on which type of powered person you're asking about. Guardians cats are tasked with finding and awakening potential senshi, so I guess you could say they decide who gets to be a senshi. For knights we have a force that powers us called the Code. I don't understand completely how it works but it is what gives us our power and what decides when a potential knight should be awaken." She answered before thinking for a moment. "I'm not the very knowledgeable on the subject but as I understand it the Negaverse higher ups decided who they want to drag into their organization, that or they forcibly corrupt a knight or senshi into serving them."
"Yes and no. You do have to be special on a certain level." She paused this was going to be complicated to explain. "Ok so every living creature has what's called a star seed, think of them like a literal metaphor for your soul. You can never see or touch it but there is a crystal inside of you that the negaverse has the ability to corrupt and that royals of order have the ability to purify. So some people have a true star seed, these are the people who have the potential to be awakened as a senshi or knight. These people are either the reincarnation of a knight or senshi who died a thousand years ago or they are the descendant of said knight. I fall into that category." She paused.
"However no one can really know who has the potential. Up until about six months ago I was just a normal teenager but then I was sent my weapon by the code and became a page. So for all intents and purpose it can happen to anyone. Tomorrow you could see a floating object and if you touch it you'd become a page or a talking cat could show up and give you a wand to make you into a senshi." She said with a chuckle.

Too much information. Way too much.
Evan regretted not asking smaller questions and he listened intently, even after he gave her a soda, even after he opened his own (and chugged nearly half of it in a second), and even after he went back to the stove to resume cooking.
Finally, and cautiously, he spoke. "I met a Guardian Cat. But she didn't say anything, so probably…not." He didn't know if he sounded disappointed or happy; on one hand there was always the hope to be something…greater. Stronger. Better.
He wouldn't have minded that.
But then the rest of it just seemed to muddle his brain.
"And I'm not related to anyone famous, so I doubt I'd inherit any magical…descendant stuff. The reincarnated stuff…you can be reincarnated? Is that like, for everyone? If I died, I don't know…if that dog—youma," he corrected, "—If that youma got me, earlier, would I be reincarnated? Even if I'm not—you know. Special?"

She took a sip of the soda she was handed. She watched him cooking and listened to his response.
"I wouldn't take that as a confirmation of anything. Guardian cats can be corrupted by the negaverse. If you ran into one of their cat's then I would imagine it wouldn't awaken you even if you had the potential." She said with a shrug.
"You wouldn't know if you were a descendant, trust me. You can be most unassuming average person and still carry an ancient knight's bloodline." She explained.
"Yes....and no. If all it did was kill you then your starseed would be returned to the galaxy cauldron and you'd be reincarnated. Unfortunately not all youma are content to feast on flesh, some devour starseeds as well. Thats part of why they're so dangerous and why knights and senshi work so hard to try and protect people from them." She solemnly. She tried not to think of it but she did sometimes wonder if her parents were at least allowed reincarnation or if that damned youma had denied them even that.
"But to answer you question yes all starseeds ideally get reincarnated, now normal starseeds have no access to their past life memories like 'special' starseeds do. Actually my particular order of knights, cosmos knights, were once tasked with guiding starseeds on their journey to reincarnation.

A cold wave of dread spread through Evan, from his feet upwards. He kept a stern expression as he tended to the grilled cheese, but it was difficult for him to process that information. Just when he was starting to be somewhat reassured, that maybe even if you died it wouldn't be all bad…
Then it was all bad.
Rebirth…sounded frightening, if you had a sense of self worth. To lose everything you were and become someone else? …It might not be so bad if you got to remember who you were. But to have that—to have even a future as someone new—taken from you, because of one of those monsters…
Well then, it almost seemed better to take your own life than to let them take everything. He shuddered and shifted positions, chewing on the inside of his cheek as he thought. In an effort to distract himself from the morbid subject of death, he thought it might be better to focus on life. Even a distant one.
"So…everyone had a past life? Even me, if I'm just plain old boring, normal, me? …And some Knight—like you—would have…made sure that that me, or, the soul…got to go be reborn? What about Karma, is that a real thing?"

Evan's reaction to her information did not go unnoticed by Ciel. She felt bad for him, though she hadn't even told him the worst information. There were fates worse than even oblivion.
"No not necessarily, some souls are freshly made. For example I did not have a past life that I know of. But all souls have the potential to be reborn." She explained.
"Don't sell your self so short. Even if you don't have a true starseed that doesn't make your life any less important. All life is precious and everyone has the potential to do great things regardless of if they have powers or not." She said unhappy with how he seemed to devalue his life in the face of the truth about the universe.
"Yes, for example my ancestor Theseus, the last knight of Hyperborea before me. One of his duties was showing souls the way to their rebirth at the cauldron."
She couldn't help but giggle at his next question. "I'm not a god, I don't know the inner working of the universe so I can't tell you whether karma is real. My princess, Sailor Cosmos, might know but I don't. Personally though, I'd like hope karma is real, that there is some sort of universal balance and that the people who do evil will face some kind of punishment."

He didn't seem very reassured when she delivered her pep talk, but he stayed silent and focused on the food he was preparing. Without looking up, he reached for a paper plate, snagged it, and then scooped the grilled cheese on top of it before sliding it over.
"If karma was real, things might make a little more sense. I mean," he was quiet for another second and then began the process of cleanup. "What type of punishment would you wish on them?"
Of course there was the matter of a princess, but if he was already taking in the concept of souls and magic, what was so hard to believe about a princess? He'd already gotten his fair share of answers and now that the confusion and novelty of it all was wearing off he realized he had so much to process that he was almost become numb to things. He wanted to learn more, but even just asking felt exhausting.
He was grateful all the same, and pulled the pan off of the stove to let it cool before he turned to face the girl again. He watched her expectantly, less for an answer and more out of a desire to see what she thought of the food.

She froze a bit at his question. 'What type of punishment', she had never given it much thought. What would she want to happen to Painite or which ever agent released the youma that killed her parent. "Something bad." She mumbled. "Sorry I haven't given it much thought." She admitted.
"I'm sorry I'm sure this is alot to take in at once." She said realizing just how much information she had dumped on him tonight. She had acquired that information over months so it didn't seem like much to her but he was probably drowning in information right now.
When he took the pan off the stove she got off of the counter and wandered over to look at it. "La nourriture semble délieuse. I can't wait to try it."

For all the information that she had dropped on him, he seemed to relax almost immediately when she expressed interest in trying it. Food was how he kept himself grounded to everything, from the preparation to serving. Evan looked over to her with a brief, hopeful little smile and then prepared a plate before sliding it over. "Then go ahead, dig in.
He stepped back, this time taking the opportunity to start scrubbing at the dishes quickly. "I mean, it's the least I can do. Well. No, I mean, I could do more if I tried, probably, but I don't even know what to do. I kind of have a headache, but I'm happy to be alive and I owe that to you. And…"
He was quiet for a minute. "…It's okay to wish bad things to happen to people, I think. If they're bad enough. I wish I could hand out some karma to some people that seem to have slipped through the cracks, but." He flashed a quick, half-hearted smile that faded almost as soon as it had appeared. "Oh well. I don't have the guts to do anything about them, anyway, I guess."

Kyuseisha no Hikari I think we can start bringing this to a close if thats ok with you "Miam!" She said as she accepted his invitation and started to dig into the chili. She listened to him calmly as she continued eating.
"C’est délicieux." She said as she finished. "Merci, look maybe it won't mean much coming from me but I think you're doing fine. Not everyone is meant for fighting, it'd be a scary world if they were. You seem like you've found your calling and if I may say so you seem pretty talented at it."
"I should probably get back to patrol." She said powering up back into Hyperborea. "I'll try to drop by this area every so often to check in."

Evan seemed a bit worried when she said she was going to head out, but it was more the prospect of walking home alone and running into another youma than it was anything else. He hated walking by himself, even now more than ever, but he absolutely could not impose more on this girl. "Oh," he said instead, and nodded. "Well, yeah. Drop by whenever. I'll cook you up something. So let me know if you ever have any requests. Do you like—do you want to swap phone numbers or something? I mean."
He shifted positions somewhat awkwardly, as though it were incredibly difficult for him to ask any more of her. "…Maybe I could pack you up some to-go dinners some time, for when you're…you know. Working late. And maybe, I mean, if you wanted, I could bother you for. I don't know, coming by and taking care of monsters or something if I see them?"
He sounded hopeful but gruff, as though he were used to the answer 'no' and didn't want to get his hopes up—but there was an undeniable undertone of slight desperation.
Evan wasn't equipped to fight monsters, and if Hyperborea hadn't been around, maybe he wouldn't have been either.

Kyuseisha no Hikari Sorry this is so late, wrap on your post She noticed the worried look on Evan face "I'll eliminate any youma still in this area so you shouldn't have to worry about them." She assured the man. "I can sense their presences so I'll know if there are any near here."
She smiled apologetically at his request for her phone number. "While I wouldn't be opposed to giving you my number, I don't really have my cell on me in this form." She explained holding up her ring hand and tapping the surface of her signet ring. "Knights communicate by magic rings and I don't think a normal phone can connect. Though maybe ask a senshi if you meet one, I believe they get magic cell phones."
She smiled warmly at his second request. "Sure hat sounds nice though next time you have to let me pay for it." She said with a laugh as she opened the door.
"Au revoir Evan. Stay safe." She said leaping up to a nearby rooftop and disappearing into the night.

Evan was dually more worried and more relaxed when she left—both for totally different reasons. Right now, he was relieved to be alone so he could just shut down and worry about his own problems without trying to remember how to be socially acceptable, but now he was worried about her—and about what might happened to him if she was gone, or to her if she was out, actively engaging in battles with monsters.
Either way, he had too much to think about and a headache was already rumbling through his skull.
Still, he looked forward to seeing her again.
