Barth did not normally seek out this sort of thing, but on the privacy of their own property, he minded less.
The physical activity portion could, unfortunately, not be avoided, although Barth planned on doing his best. The brisk October breeze, which had begun to take a cold turn towards true 1st October weather, moved unhindered over the moors. He was here because of scientific curiousity, and although nothing might come of it, there was always the faint promise that something could.
"Alright," Barth said nervously, dressed in less than his best, since he was prepared (if necessary) for things to get...scuffed. "Let's err...keep this friendly." A bed of writhing thorns arched in anticipation at Barth's feet. Barth's claws were folded behind his back. He eyed Zar, several paces away.
The way he talked was still a bit sore, and slower than usual.

Zar was dress likewise in more expendable attire, though of course nothing which one could go so far as to call practical, he eyed the thorns with a bright and keen sort of attentiveness.
"Friendly?" he repeated, licking his lips thoughtfully, "That would be a novel concept wouldn't it? I'll consider it."
He did not shift, but instead moved forward to close the distance, sweeping his tail around Barth in a sinuous curve, not tightly, but tight enough it was a deliberate effort to goad the thorns themselves. By now the pain from the piercing was merely a dull ache and had moved into the realm of more pleasantly distracting than particularly debilitating.

The thorns did respond.
Zar was, at least, familiar with their brand of restraint, although they seemed...marginally tighter than he was used to. They did not pull Zar away, however.
Barth was close enough that his arm was trapped between both their chests. He tapped Zar with a clawtip idly.
"You know, I used to have to do this with my claws. ...And it usually ended up with me...impaled on something."

The bite of the thorns always simply spurred Zar onwards, even when they bit and restrained him, he simply tensed his muscles and resisted the tug of their strength, endeavouring with a great deal of effort to look as if they did not bother him at all.
Close enough to Barth that the oddly sweet and pleasant smell of his breath was discernible, he grinned and bared several of his very long canines. "Impalement is a look that suits you." he said.
His own claws twisted around and seized the other demon's side as if preparing for some grim waltz. The grip was not gentle. "Perhaps you should do a little more manual labour."

"Oh," Barth melted tragically, "tsk, don't kid about that."
The thorns kept up a steady and coiling pressure, teasing Zar's already tense muscles.
"We are in a very dire state, you know. We only have one staff member. And I do hate to see you and Calder untended."

Zar rolled his eyes. "I have yet to meet anyone capable of tending me. Calder perhaps, but I have far more complex needs than even he is capable of."
He seemed in no hurry to push the stakes, enjoying the thorns and the shallow breathing they elicited.
"You will simply have to get your own hands dirty."

"You think so? I think this match is turning out to be a shade friendlier than I had anticipated."
The thorns eased in return, slipping to caress Zar's throat and behind his long and floppy ears.
Barth smiled close to Zar's shoulder.
"Would you prefer teeth to claws?"

Zar exhaled in a shuddering hiss that was the word yes contorted and drawn out like some whispered incantation, tangling into a low growl in his throat.
There was an instant of stilled calm. "I can be lesssss friendly, if you'd like." he said.
And then threw his coils around the other demon and tightened them with the kind of pressure that would have crushed a lesser creature's ribcage.

Barth winced and hissed as Zar turned the pressure up considerably, and Barth's thorns too clenched in return sympathy.
"I like friendly," Barth wheedled, "No, friendly is...is great."

"No. I like unfriendly." he hissed in satisfaction, "You asssked." He twisted his coils tighter and angled his head to sink his fangs firmly into Barth's shoulder, arching his tongue into any blood he managed to draw.

"Nngh, z-Zar," Barth gasped, and the blood nursed quickly and smoothly from his shoulder. He was not very good at struggling personally, although he did wiggle some, but it was the vines that became more aggressive in wrapping around Zar and hauling him backwards.
Mixed up in the vines was something else. There was a hiss, a sliding of scales, and something long and unexpected slithered past Zar's cheek.

Zar took an almost vampiric interest in licking at Barth's shoulder, savouring the cloying taste of his fear and only relinquished his hold when the vines pulled tightly enough about his throat and pulled him back enough that he was forced to let go. He licked his lips as he did so though, pupils wide and strange as he stared at the cut he'd created.
He sunk his talons deeply into Barth's flesh for grip and was about to bite again when he noticed the snake and was completely derailed.
"What..." he said, this hiss tapping into some primal instinct deep in his fear, perking his ears at it and craning to see. "Wasss that?"
He did not even notice the answering swell of fear in himself, his own snake appearing at their feet, long and sinuous, intertwined with his tail and entangling itself in the vines and twisting about its opposite.

Barth stumbled back with the modicrum of space afforded him, clasping his bleeding shoulder. He eyed the dark viper as it cut between both of them, then circled lazily in the air.
"Ah. That's it."
He touched his claw to his tongue, tasting what Zar had been so enthusiastically dining on earlier. "I hope it wasn't the blood that did it. But I felt..." he looked at Zar, "a building excitement as we exchanged fear. Didn't you? Very interesting."
Barth hissed about his shoulder again, then took a seat in the wet earth. The viper slid over to Zar's neck, rubbing against his upper body like a cat, then twisting down to his legs.
"Did you really have to bite quite so hard?"

Zar's own snake lazily arched and looped into the air in pursuit of the viper, its attention fixed on the other serpent with the same sort of absolute focus which Zar still levelled at Barth himself on the ground below it.
"I felt it too, just by the way." he said in a tone that was void of its usual uncertain self consciousness, a tone laden with very definitive direction and confidence rarely seen in Zar. "And I don't actually think that it was the blood, after all, I hardly spilled a drop of my own." There was something wolfish in the way he smiled at the other demon at the mention of the excitement involved. "It was certainly different than the usual sort, I would wager there are very good odds that it is anchored in the artifacts."
Idly he reached up to stroke the dark viper as it passed across his neck, possessive of it already as much as he was possessive of the Sloth demon it was clearly a part of.
"And yes. I did." he said. "It is no more than you quite deserve. You likely deserved quite a lot worse for the sins I am not even aware of yet."
He made his way over to where Barth sat, his tail loosely embracing or simply tenderly touching the viper whenever he passed it on the way. Arriving, he sat not on the grubby ground but on Barth's sprawled fom instead, straddling his lap on his knees, hooves folded behind him. His own python looped around overhead and nestled across Barth's shoulders like a very literal sort of feather boa, at the very least mercifully light in its spectral nature.
"Perhaps I will even bite you again." he mused as he leaned over, his lips inclined close to the still raw injury.
