Scimitar in hand, Marcus was debating how rough to give it to the new trainee. That and what to focus on. Overall, if this guy was mist, his best bet with Marcus it would be defending. It would be a fun first spar. Smirking, he spun his sword in hand, and motioned to his chest. "I want you to strike first. Show me what you can do, and we'll go from there. Sound good yeah?"

"Sounds good to me."
Rhys gave a nod as he took a step back to put some distance between them. Considering Marcus outranked him it was palatable to be given the first shot, so with both hands gripping the hilt of his sword he moved to close the gap.
Then tripped and wound up taking an unceremonious nosedive, landing with a loud thud and the muted clattering of his weapon across the ********: 40/40

Marcus did his best to maintain a straight face as the other man took a face plant and he somehow managed it. It was as good a shot as any to the trainee's credit. "Alright, now, I do want to point out, that in a real battle, you don't linger. Not even a second. The moment you don't connect you move to defend." Without missing a beat, Marcus thrust his sword downward, pulling it back up after making contact with the fear sheild. "Imagine getting pinned and having your shield drained simply by being prone and stuck. It's a fast way to die. Always think three moves ahead. Think not just how to win, but how to survive. Many encounters as you start off will test your resilience and reaction. You need to learn how to both anticipate and react to whatever is thrown at you." Two steps back. "Come at me again." HP: 60 DMG: 5

He flinched when the other's sword made contact, held his breath as it sent a dulled sort of pain through his body. It was...weird, but it hurt. It wasn't like he was just getting tackled on the field this time, it was a sword so he flinched. It was expected, but he still made a face at his own reaction.
"Makes sense," he said as he scrambled to his feet once he was able, and made a move to grab Zephira before he focused on Marcus again.
"No lingering, if you miss put up your guard right away. Learn to fight and survive," he muttered to himself. "Anticipate, react." It was starting to jumble a bit but with time he had a feeling he'd get the hang of it. Time, and lots of practice.
When he was instructed to strike again he did so. It was a quick step forward as he swung his blade upward and across the other man's chest.

It was a sudden change, and as the blade dug into his fear shield, Marcus thrust forward, his sword pulled upward quickly in succession. "Let the weapon help guide your movements. They are your greatest boon- they must act like an extension of yourself, because without them, you will die. You die, and they might die as well." Inside his head, Desidero was smiling. He had a few choice feelings on that subject. "Also, the second you have a charge, I want you to use it." He wanted to see what this guy was capable of. HP: 56 DMG: 4

He felt the other's sword make contact again, and he winced. He needed to shift his blade only slightly, this time taking a downward slash directly in front of him and apparently hitting air.
It was a little hard to focus on the fight and listen to what the more experienced hunter was imparting to him, but he tried. Zephira wasn't helping.

He huffed. Not what he said.
"Not sure my partner and I see eye to eye, just yet."

He couldn't help the snorted back laugh that managed to escape him. "That's not uncommon." In fact- "Desidero." Marcus said, motioning to the scimitar, "He's a vampire with a pervert streak a mild wide, and thinks I'd be better off not married, and sleeping with as many people as physically possible. He also wants me to let you know that, and I quote, 'that is a lie' and 'I just need to have a bit more of an open marriage.' Which is quite the opposite of what I define as loyal. That being said, your weapon's willingness to work with you is personal. You seem to be taking this spar seriously, but if they're being stubborn on something as simple as this? I can't help but think they might be holding you back." He dove at Rhys, blade spinning in an arch before coming down. "Never forget that even here, you are liable to be killed. All it takes is a well placed blade." HP: 56 DMG: 15 _ p a o cx terrible dice are terrible

It was a feeble attempt at a block with his sword, but the force of the attack pushed his weapon down and he felt Marcus's blade slash heavily down his shield. He was smirking though, mostly because of what Marcus said about his own weapon.
"It's probably a little from both sides," he said as he put a few steps between them. "I'm givin' it some more time. A month's not that long, right?"
