They had camped out in Tale when he saw it, staring down upon him from the crest of an overlooking slope. It was an aldabuk; although he was new to Tale he had seen these creatures before, or at least tamed versions of them tagging along with foreign travelers.
This one, Ouen thought, was definitely wild. It had a great shaggy neck and arching horns, a dark brown-red hide with a few white spots along the flanks. He also noticed that it did not seem particularly pleased to see them. It pawed at the ground and lifted its neck to let out an angry bellow. For a while after, however, it did nothing else – and Ouen got to thinking that maybe it would accept the two of them hanging around if they didn’t make too much of a fuss.
But then the beast was charging, barreling down on their little camp before Ouen could even reach for this lance. Shenandoah twisted to his feet to snap and growl at the thing, but the aldabuk shot straight towards the shifter, not even taking any note. He lifted his lance but didn’t have time to aim the blade, and was left using the shaft to parry away the aldabuk’s mean horns. This went on for a while until the beast changed tactics – now twisting around and kicking with it’s hind legs.
Ouen stumbled backwards, dazed from a solid blow to his chest. He didn’t exactly feel like a rematch. He grabbed his satchel, left his dinner half-eaten on the ground, and followed Shenandoah’s retreating back to get the heck out of dodge.
