They arrived on the top level of the labyrinth, surrounded by a garden of glowing blue flowers and bathed in sunlight that filtered through the lake above their heads. "Seasons on Mercury tend to be dramatic," she said, dropping Mont Blanc's hand and releasing her hold on Mendel's collar. He wandered away, body language relaxed, and went to go sniff a spray of hyacinths. "Or... days and nights, anyway. It's a bit reversed. Orbits are weird." "You'll be safe as long as you're with me," she said, waving for him to follow her, "but we should go down to level seven and get you keyed into the security system." Just in case. She was already the girl with the carnivorous wonder - but she was doing her best to put that behind her. Leaning against the elevator call button, Mistral gave the other squire an expectant look. "So, what do you think?" she asked. "I haven't done a great deal of traveling, but my impression so far is that Mercury tends to be a little bit heavy on the obvious technology. I'm not sure if everywhere else is less advanced, or just more subtle. The Silver Millennium was a galaxy-spanning empire, after all. It had to be at least a little bit Star Wars." The elevator slid open. "After you."

The moment they arrived and Mont Blonc got a glimpse of those flowers, his eyes widened and his heart swelled. Without even meaning to, he was drawn back to his first meeting with Aegir, back when they'd joked about the possibilities of his mountain being a field of flowers. It felt so long ago, now - "Oh my goodness, " he breathed out as he took in the sight of them. He longed to get a closer look, but Mistral was moving, and when it came to safety, that was kind of a priority.
At her question, his smile said how he felt before he could even piece the words together. "It's absolutely gorgeous. - and you're right - my friend, Aegir - " Star Wars made him think back to Star Trek, to the plethora of paraphernalia he had strewn all throughout his apartment. "I don't know if you know him, h-he's the senshi of silence - he would love this, I think." He fidgeted a bit, looking down and then back up again, laughing softly. "My wonder's not half as stunning as this, to be honest." When it came to plant life or technology, none of it compared.
It was on the elevator that he finally found the courage to ask, bubbles of anxiety rising and falling in his gut. "E-excuse me, Mistral... I don't want to be rude, but... if it wo-wouldn't be too much of a problem - I don't know how your wonder functions, but - if there any chance we could - perhaps, maybe - could I possibly - you could say n-no, s-so don't feel obligated, please - but please - could I have some of those flowers, perhaps?" He felt so rude asking. But he knew Nadia would love them, and with the slight shift in his and Colin's relationship, it - it would be nice if he could finally bring him back a space flower, wouldn't it?

The elevator moved slowly, and its cables groaned but not in a particularly concerning way. "Since you asked so nicely," she said, smiling gently at him. Mistral wasn't going to agonize over Mont Blanc's stuttering or the cause thereof - maybe he was just a naturally nervous person. He hadn't seemed familiar with her history amongst the knights, and she would wait. "Yes. We can come back up once we finish in the lab, and I'll give you some fresh cuttings. Lucky girl - or boy. I don't judge." The elevator rumbled to a stop. "Keep close to my side," instructed Mistral as they stepped off. "The scientists here were... prolific when it came to setting traps. Chaos was invading. They wanted to keep people away from their research... As far as I can tell, though, the labyrinth was never breached. Just buried and forgotten about." She showed him the most direct route to the security room. The security pilar had retracted at some point, tucked away by whatever magic kept her wonder running. Mistral brushed her hand over the wall panel emblazoned with her wonder's winged Mercury sigil, and the console rose out of the floor. "Put your hand over the palm-print," she instructed. "That will give you clearance to access the lower floors of the labyrinth. Careful, though. Um. It bites. Runs the clearances off blood. DNA and magic."

At the offer of fresh cuttings, his smile was bright and warm, almost boyish - although at the remark, his cheeks burned and the smile became more coy, his glance diverted downwards at the floor, winding his fingers together before him and fiddling with his pen. How did he even begin to explain the situation? Little of both, one girlfriend and one best friend turned lover? God, it'd be a nightmare just explaining it to Kyle. "You're most kind, Mistral. Thank you."
Mont Blonc did not need to be told twice. "That makes sense. Depending on what they were researching, it may have been... very dangerous if chaos found it, yes?" he offered tentatively, quietly; this was a very rare opportunity, after all, seeing someone else's wonder. He wanted to seem engaged, because he was, and standing there idle and quiet wasn't about to convey what he needed.
Without hesitation, he placed his hand on the palm print as she said - and then just as he did, registered what she said about biting. "Oh. Um." His face paled a little, and yet he blushed at the same time, fidgeting a bit again as he glanced at her. "S-so - the bite's normal o-or - ? - does it need to bite me?" Oh no.

There was a pneumatic his, and a needle plunged into the palm of Mont Blanc's hand. It retracted slowly. A hologram, slightly glitched, wearing the regalia of a knight of Mistral, her dark hair unbound and hanging to mid-back, appeared. "Squire of Saturn," it said, in its dead creator's voice. "Welcome to the halls of Mistral." "My mother," said Mistral, a pang of sadness catching in her throat. "An echo. Not the genuine article. Thank you, Raziele. You're dismissed." The hologram blinked out. The security pilar retracted into the floor. "Let's go back to the elevator," Mistral said brightly, forcing away thoughts of how things might have been if her own wonder were like Babylon, and she'd had an ancestor to guide her. I wouldn't be Asimov. I wouldn't be me. "I use the deepest lab. It's the best stocked, and I have the most memories there - Mendel, don't stand so close. You'll trip me." Her dog, who'd been circling her legs, fell into position slightly to her rear and to her left. Mistral lead the way back to the elevator, sticking to the same path they'd taken before. "Too many ghosts," she said quietly. "And I can't go to six at all." She hit the call button, and the doors slid neatly open. "There was a... a massacre here," Mistral said quietly, following Mont Blanc into the elevator. "Graft versus host. I brought a team of knights in to help me find things in the labyrinth. I'm fragile - I can't walk for that long, or run, or climb - but they could. The labyrinth thought they were invaders. I couldn't have known, but - I also should have. I was just a page. I didn't know what this place was capable of. Most Wonders can't kill you on a lark."

Mont Blonc, by reflex, gave a short, soft yelp as the needle broke skin, biting his lower lip hard as it pulled away. (It wasn't really so bad, just unexpected - and coupled with a mild phobia of needles, it was just a bad combination.) The start he gave at the sight of the hologram was milder, because really, in a place like this, a hologram wasn't wholly unexpected - it could've just as easily been that or lasers making 'pew pew' noises. And it knew him, which was actually pretty cool.
What did surprise him was what Mistral said, his eyes widening a fraction, chest tightening at the sadness in her voice. "Your - " He cut himself off. Some part of him wished he could do something to reassure her, but he certainly didn't know her well enough yet, and his cheeks flushed at the thought. "I'm sorry, " he offered instead, quietly, and knew it seemed lame in comparison to what someone with more grace and articulation would've said. But he felt compelled to try and say something.
The squire nodded, mutely, and followed Mistral along without a word of complaint, casting an adoring glance at the dog who trailed so close to her. He'd never really considered it, the feasibility of bringing animals to their wonders - not that any animals would really do so well on his, to be honest -
"G-ghosts?" he echoed softly, trying to keep his voice level - speaking of his mountain. Although when she spoke more, it made more and more sense... albeit, more sense didn't mean comforting. "Oh... " So that would be why her wonder had a reputation. Clearly.
He resisted the urge to ask if it was safe to be here now; he doubted she would be bringing him where she was if it wasn't, or he really hoped so anyway. Mont Blonc assumed that string of questions was one she probably got a lot, and didn't really feel like putting her through the same old song and dance. It was probably hard enough for her as it was, considering. "You're right. There's no way you could have known," he offered instead, flashing her a tentative smile. "It's brave of you to come back, I mean - after something like that." He hadn't wanted to go back to his; really, he still didn't plan to any time in the near future. Of all the things Mont Blonc considered himself, 'brave' wasn't exactly one of them.
His smile grew milder, softer. "I don't want you to think I don't think you're capable, Mistral," he started tentatively; things like this were tricky. "But you mentioned being fragile, and - just - if you need any help, please let me know? I'll be more than happy to, considering all the trouble you're going to for me." The blush resumed, dark and wide-spread against his pale cheeks; he really didn't want her thinking it was some kind of pity move or something.

The elevator moved just as slowly as before, and Mistral leaned slightly against the wall in the way people leaned when they were trying to not let on that they were tired. "Thank you for the offer," she said. It was tempting to take him up on it. Her wonder would pose him no danger now that he was keyed into the security system, and it would be difficult to get others to come back here any time soon. "That's very generous. I'll keep you in mind." The elevator doors slid open, revealing the lab beyond. Mistral had been doing her best to cart all her trash back to earth, but this part of her wonder was clearly lived-in. There was a kettle on one of the benches, resting on a hotplate that was clearly of ancient Mercurean design. Another bench had been taken over as a makeshift pantry - Mistral appeared to eat a lot of cereal, and her dog, a lot of kibble. "Go ahead and pull the blueprints up," she told Mont Blanc, indicating a table not currently pulling double-duty. "I'll get the materials we need." She walked away, headed for the cabinets at the far end of the room. Her dog, apparently off high alert now that they were "home," took the opportunity to circle Mont Blanc's legs, sniffing frenetically at his pants and shoes. "You can pet him now," called Mistral as she pulled things out of the cabinets. She'd seen the looks the other squire had been giving Mendel. "I mean, he's a service dog, so thank you for waiting? But now's a good time."

Mont Blonc smile brightened, relieved that she hadn't taken it the wrong way at all. "Please do, " he coaxed gently, and really, he'd be more than happy to be of use to someone.
To be honest, as beautiful as the flowers had been, this was probably his favorite place on her wonder so far... if just because cozy, lived-in places tended to be his favorite thing besides nature itself. "Yes Mistral, " he said, warmly and more than willingly, doing as she asked of him without so much as batting an eye. In his chest, his heart gave an excited thump - it felt so wonderful, really, finally accomplishing something. Even something like this, it - he'd spent so long just kind of tripping over something that -
The offer had his eyes widening, and his smile was almost boyish in its eagerness as he gasped out, "Really? I - oh, thank you, " he gasped out enthusiastically, easing down onto the floor so he could offer his hands to the dog and hopefully get some good, eager petting in once he was sure the dog was alright with it. "If you don't mind me asking - how long have you had him? His name's Mendel, isn't it?"
