Good times were not in Evan's past, present or future. Bad luck followed him like a curse, and he'd half a mind that it must have just been his own awful karma biting him in the a**.

…Except, he wasn't as worried about Karma biting his a** as he was about the giant dog following him, nipping at his heels and charging full speed. It should have had Evan multiple times now, but his only saving grace was the fact that he was small and fast, and this thing ran like it didn't know how to use its legs. Weaving through alleyways, it was slamming into the walls left in right, struggling to make turns and keep up with the teenager.

It was late enough that everything in the area was closed, or he might have been able to hide inside somewhere—anywhere—but that was his luck as well.

…As was the fact that he had run out of alleyway to weave through, and he was going to lose his only advantage. He could see trees and benches in the distance, and though there were a few lit lamps, they weren’t going to save him.

He couldn’t see any people, and he couldn't even call for help. Every breath he took was a desperate gasp for air, and even when he'd tried to scream, his throat had closed up. He was terrified, and all he could think about was how in a few seconds he was going to be dog food.

But he kept running, even though his legs felt like logs and his chest felt full of water and black was edging into the corners of his vision.

Because, maybe something would scare the dog off.

Only, it wasn't a dog. He just didn't know what a youma was, or what it was after. He didn’t know that while it looked like a dog, and acted like a dog, it was something worse. And if he'd tried to fight it? He'd have never stood a chance.

It was rare that Hyperborea's patrols took her up on the roofs of businesses but there she was this night. Honestly she wasn't sure why she didn't patrol from roof top more often, it gave her a much better view of her surroundings.

A pang of chaos aura warned her of a nearby youma. She tried to narrow in on it following the aura to the edge of a roof. Looking down she saw the source of the aura, a weird dog-looking youma and some poor civilian being chased down by the monster.

She summoned her bow and aimed down at the monster, as she pulled back on her bow string a silver starlight arrow appeared. She tried to wait until the man with the black and red hair had put enough distance between the two of them before firing. Once she did fire her arrow hit it's mark. The dog monster was enveloped by a bright explosion of silver starlight.

Hyperborea watched for a second the silver reflecting in her amethyst eyes before she dispelled her magic revealing a blinded dog youma, she banished her bow and activated her aspect. As she was enveloped by the silver starlight sheen of cosmos she leapt down to where the youma was stumbling about.

She did not wast time with the monster she rolled over it's back grabbing it around the waist and using the momentum of her roll she threw the monster into the wall of a near by building. Once the creature smashed into the wall Hyperborea fell upon the creature pummeling it as it howled in pain from the touch of her aspect until all that was left of it was dust. It had tried to fight back but aside from a few scratches and cuts it had managed to give her it was no match for the squire and soon enough the fight was over.

As she looked over the youma's intended target, he didn't looks so good. His breathing was ragged and he looked like he was about to pass out. What she wouldn't give to be able to transfer energy like Babylon at this moment, still she would do what she could for the civilian. She walked over to him and placed her hands on both his cheeks leaving her aspect on. It helped with Alexa so I hope this helps him too. "Pardonnes moi, this should help you feel calmer. Are you ok? Did the youma manage hurt you anywhere." She inquired.

Hyperborea's magic
Her bow fires an arrow of starlight that explodes like a flash bang (though slightly less powerful), channeling time is 30 secs.

Cosmos Aspect
The silvery sheen of starlight covers the Knights of the Cosmos, and their touch is just as heavenly. It's warm and pleasant to most, but acidic and painful to corrupted beings. For the followers of Chaos, physical contact with one of these Knights feels like a mild chemical burn: although it does little in the way of damage, it's hard to tolerate it.

I wasn't sure if you wanted the youma fight to last for a few post or not, if you do just let me know and I can edit it.

The civilian she had rescued seemed stunned; much of the past few seconds were a blur in his mind. One minute he was certain he'd be dead, and the next minute there had been a burst of light (a bomb? A flare?). The next, he was staring at some colorful woman pummeling a dog. And she hit it so damn hard it turned to dust.

But there was no blood.

He wasn't sure if that scared him or reassured him.

Talking cats flashed in his mind, but the thought was fleeting and lacked reassurance.

"What?" he blurted; he took a step back from her instinctively. He was paranoid enough about running into people after dark, but this was too much for him.

Whatever blessing her aspect might have bestowed upon him was lost when he recoiled. Her touch wasn't painful, but he was a bundle of nerves and emotions. If he was hurt, he couldn't tell, and he didn't have the focus to give himself a quick check.

Instead, he stared at her with wide eyes and took another hasty step backwards, nearly stumbling over his own feet. "—The what? —What did you just do?" he asked, voice trembling and uncertain. He was preparing to run again, and might have if his legs didn't choose that instant to go out.

He collapsed atop of them in a flustered heap but made no effort to pull himself back up. Instead, he clutched his bag closer to him and stared up at the Knight with a gaze that, for all its fear, demanded answers.

Hyperborea's mind began to panic when the civilian backed out of her touch. Had she done something wrong. A look of worry crossed her face as the man's legs collapsed under him. No, no, no! I'll do more harm then good if I scare him into hurting himself. She thought to herself.

"Please don't be afraid, I'm not going to hurt you!" She pleaded.

"Do you mean what I did to the dog monster? That's called a youma, I dusted it...err killed it basically. They're monsters that feed on normal people but if you hit them enough they turn to dust." She thought for a moment. "Or do you mean my touch? Its magic, a sort of blessing that makes my touch warm and gentle to normal people but painful to monsters like that."

She bit her lip, she sounded crazy. It was the situation with Verona all over again, but it was the truth... the truth just happened to be insane. "I'm sorry this is all probably hard to believe. But I am a knight, a squire of Cosmos to be exact. I mean you no harm."

She tried to think of something. "I am called Hyperborea." She said offering her hand hoping introductions might make the situation seem less crazy for the civilian.

Evan stared up at her in blank rapture; the tell tale signs of a blossoming panic attack were rapidly erupting. His eyes were wide and he was totally frozen, sans the sudden chest heaving and rapid, uneven breathing--and then he blinked, shuddered, and stopped. He curled into himself a big and groaned, forehead on he knees for a second and then he sat up to look at her again.

He had met a talking cat not so long ago. This shouldn't have been so traumatizing. Well. Except, then, nothing had been trying to eat him.

While he couldn't speak, he nodded blankly at her so she could at least understand that he understood, even if it was minimally.

"I don't understand half of what you said," he confessed a long moment later, with a soft and uncertain voice. But he understood that she said she didn't want to hurt him (which was arguably not something you could trust, but she had saved him from that dog...thing. Whatever she had called it.

He didn't seem to want to take her hand but reluctantly, mechanically, he did.

He did not offer his name, either out of wariness or because he was too overwhelmed. His eyes never left her face and he seemed to be expecting some attack even after he had reached up to shake her hand; he asked, "What do you mean 'Normal people?' You say that like you aren't normal."

She wasn't, obviously, but he was struggling to understand. 'Can you...can you go over that again, please?"

She was really worried when he started having a the tell-tale signs of a panic attack. She had experienced a few of those herself and knew how terrible they were. So she was glad when he actually responded to her.

"I'm sorry I know that its alot to take in, and most of it is hard to believe." She said in a calm voice. She knew she didn't need to tell this civilian anything but she worried that if he was left in the dark he would wind up in more danger.

"No I'm not normal, at least not when I'm like this. Do you watch anime? You know magical girls, I'm sort of like that, able to transform and become stronger. When I become a knight, I'm stronger and faster and more agile than a normal human that's why I was able to fight that dog monster. I also have access to magic, That's why I have this glow." She said as she touched the face of her signet ring and willed her aspect to disappear to demonstrate.

She summoned her bow and drew back the bow string to make her starlight arrow appear. "This is my weapon, it fires arrows of starlight. That's what caused the bright flash light earlier." She explained as she relaxed her bow string letting the arrow disappear.

"It's my job to protect innocent people like you from monsters like that." She said gesturing to where the youma had been.

"Myself and other knights fight against an evil group called the Negaverse, they're the ones who made that monster." She decided not to bring up senshi since her explanation was already confusing enough.

"Does that make sense? Maybe we should find some place to sit down, I'll answer any questions you have if it helps." She said motioning to the nearby benches.

He nodded, but there wasn't really any indication what he was agreeing too. He pushed himself up, still clutching at his bag, and shuffled over to a bench.

"...I met a cat," he said hesitantly. "Who talked. She was criticizing me for not knowing anything. But she's a black cat so go figure I cross paths with her and then get bad luck, huh?"

It was a rhetorical question and he was still mulling over the information. He avoided looking at her for a few seconds, but he seemed to need the reassurance that she was there and not some figment of his imagination.

Half the things she said still made no sense, but bits and pieces were working. The last magical creature he'd met had belittled him for thinking it was a hoax so he didn't try to ask again and just went with it.

"Okay," he said somewhat mutely, like he was already detached from the situation.

He had a dozen other questions. A hundred. A part of him wanted to understand and a part of him wanted to forget. He looked at her, hands wringing nervously, and asked, "What am I supposed to do now?"

It wasn't a self-centered or accusatory question--just a confused one. Like he knew he wasn't going to go home the same person no matter what happened and he just wanted to make sure he knew what he'd gotten himself into.

She sat down beside him on the bench.

"The creature you met was a mauvian, we also call them guardian cats." She explained. "They don't always have the most agreeable personalities. She shouldn't have criticized you though, we all start off confused and uninformed whether powered or civilian."

"Guardian cats serve Senshi, they're magical warriors who fight alongside us knights." She explained, though she did wonder if the Mauvian in question served white moon or if they were corrupted.

When he asked his next question she had to pause, she rubbed the back of her head trying to think of an answer.

"Well, that's not an easy question. Really you can do what you like, I'm not going to restrain you and the negaverse doesn't know you exist so really you're free to go." She paused. "But if you want my advice, go back home and don't go out at night. Evil things lurk in the shadows and night time isn't safe for an ill-prepared human. If you remember that danger exists in Destiny City you're already more prepared than most."

"I know it's dangerous at night. It's dangerous any time. I know there's evil." His voice shook; "I've known that before your youma or negawhatever showed up. You don't have to tell me about it."

For a second he looked bitter and accusatory but then he just slunk against the back of the bench and sighed. He looked tired and apologetic a second later.

"I'm sorry," he said slowly. "Thank you for getting rid of that thing. I know there's no way I could have done what you did. It would have eaten me alive. I don't even like going outside. Not in the late afternoon, or evening or night if early morning. I just don't have that option with work, you know? But I get it. I promise, I know it's dangerous. If I could stay inside forever, I would."

He seemed genuine and shaken, still, but he was warming up to the girl next to him now that his adrenaline was waning.

"I just thought in the city you only had to worry about bad people, you know? Muggers, gangsters, murderers..." He shrugged meekly. "You can have nightmares enough about them, without throwing monsters into the mix. I used to not go outside without someone with me. But they called me a baby and it got stupid to wait somewhere for a ride or a walking buddy so I had to suck it up." He didn't know why he was running his mouth and when he caught himself he clammed up and hastily finished, "But you can't live your life waiting on someone else to have your back, and you can't hide from the night. If I could, I would, but thanks for getting me out of trouble tonight. I--I don't know how to thank you. Do you want dinner or something? I can make you a good dinner to thank you. Anything you want."

Talking about food was the most energy he'd managed to show, and his eyes seemed to light up; that was something he could root himself to, and it seemed to put him in a bit of a better mood.

"Je suis désolé. I don't mean to be the bearer of bad new." She bit her lip, she wondered if it was right to share this. "It's just, I've lost people to those monsters. People I loved dearly, I just don't want to see more innocent blood spilled."

"But you're right you can't live in fear. Just try to be safe and stick to places with lots of people." She said with a shrug and gave a sympathetic smile.

When he offered to cook her dinner she had a genuinely delighted smile on her face. It had been months since she'd had an actual home cooked meal. "Merci, I'd love to have some dinner. I'll take you up on your offer." She said as she powered down to Ciel.

She was wearing a sleeveless white hoodie, jean shorts, and white combat boots. Her golden locket and earrings gleamed in the dim light.

To a certain extent she knew that going to have dinner with some strange man she just meet was a bad idea. But he seemed like a good person and even if she was wrong she could always power up to Hyperborea and easily deal with him.

"You know there alot of bad things out there, but there are also alot of wonderful things. There is beauty in the universe that most people couldn't even dream of." She said as she looked up at the stars. "I have a place up there." She said pointing towards the sky. "A beautiful city amongst the stars. I could show it too you if you want. After dinner of course." She offered with a smile.

Evan looked perplexed with her transformation and tilted his head, noting, "You look different. Like, not the same person at all."

He didn't dwell on it and instead tried to remember this new face.

"Maybe," he said of her offer, but seemed a but self conscious and wary of whatever deep space mumbo jumbo was going on about.

Dinner was far easier to talk about. "I can take you to the restaurant I work at. Well--it's a bar," he said, apologetic again, "But if you head back there with me..."

He stood and drew in a shaky breath before settling himself, and the. Turned towards where he had just run from. "I'll make you something. And maybe we could talk a little more about this...? I don't...I mean, clearly you are something not normal, but I don't get...how that all works. I'd like to know. A little. If--if you're okay with that? I don't know what's off limits and I--"

He froze and then jutted out a hand. "I'm sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Evan. And I'm very grateful to meet you. And I'm sorry if I was rude. I was just...just a little shaken."

"It's magic, it protects my identity from enemies." She explained.

She hoped he would take her up on her offer, seeing wonders were really an amazing experience. "I hope you do and I promise it's completely safe."

She was a little disappointed it wasn't actually going to be home cooked but then again restaurant food was still good. "Um my age isn't going to be an issue right, if we're going to a bar?" She asked.

"I'll be happy to explain as best I can. Like I said I'll answer any questions, and if there is question I'm not comfortable answering I'll let you know. But feel free to ask whatever's on your mind." She assured him.

She shook the offered hand. "My civilian name is Ciel. No need to worry it's understandable given your situation. Most people are unnerved by their first encounter with youma."

Ciel got up and waited for Evan to show her the way to his bar.

"Your age will be fine," he said with confidence. "It's my kitchen."

He was territorial, clearly, and protective of it. "But the kitchen closes earlier than the bar. It's closed now, but it's my kitchen. No ones going to fight me if I wanna use it. Besides, the boss went home and I'm crashing with the bartender, so..."

He shrugged. "I'll whip you up something good. But you'll know where the place is after I show you, so if you're ever out, you know, saving people...and you get hungry. Well, you let me know. If you ever get bored and wanna double check to make sure I get home safely, I'll feed you. And trust me," he looked her in the eyes, "you'll come back for my food. Everyone does."

He kept walking towards the restaurant, anxious and jumpy and dying every shadow. He stayed close to her, and while he had plenty of questions he was saving them--for the privacy, and safety--of his kitchen.

"I'll stop by when I can, and I'll see if some of my knight and senshi friends can check in on your restaurant every so often." She reassured him.

"Though if you're offering to treat me each time, I'm gonna have to decline. I appreciate the offer but I'd feel bad if I didn't pay you for your cooking, I'm fairly wealthy so its not an issue." She said. It was a personal policy not to accept handouts, after all what good was her money if she didn't spend it.

As they walked Ciel was oblivious to the shadows. Her patrols had taken any fear of the dark things lurking in the city away and she knew she could always become Hyperborea if things did go south.

However she wasn't oblivious to Evan's nervousness. She tried to make small talk with him about his bussiness and other mundane things to keep his mind off of it.

Once they'd reached his kitchen Ciel followed him in and walked over to a clear counter hefting herself up to sit on it. "Ok we're alone, fire away with the questions." She said figuring he had been holding back on the questions because he wanted to wait till they reached the kitchen.

Evan was happy for the distracting conversation--glad for her confidence. Even when they reached the bar and slipped into the kitchen he didn't seem like he was ready to ask the big questions. But she was comfortable with him and he was in his safe zone and...what could go wrong?
