It hadn't exactly been gentle, but it had been necessary, certainly. Zeke had let it go for a while, months, but it had reached a point now where the Mist was actually growing concerned for the Life's health. Sure, he got him to eat, more so now than ever before, but those meals were spread far in between, and Zeke was pretty sure Ever wasn't taking enough breaks from his research to hit the majority of his daily meals. He'd noticed the man slimming again, and it was time to drag him away from his books and back into something resembling a normal adult routine including meals and sleeping. So no, it hadn't been gentle. Zeke had more or less thrown the Lifer over his shoulder and marched him out onto the training field, enduring or ignoring any protests, be they verbal or physical.

Ever had far too much sense to do something stupid like kick or scream or struggle: instead, with a huffing sigh and another long look toward his work, he just went limp in Zeke's grasp, sprawled out over his shoulder with his hands hanging about his thighs. Six feet of slightly-grumpy, not-exactly-thrilled intermediate hunter. He blinked a few times as they approached the field, glasses still on -- crookedly -- and he struggled to get them off so they wouldn't fall. "I do come out here, you know." Sometimes. Mostly to watch, these days.

"Not nearly enough," he countered smoothly, giving Ever's thigh a small squeeze. "Works important, but so is this." He bent, setting the Lifer on his feet again, hand lingering until he was steady. "Besides, when's the last time we threw down?" Brows arched as she grinned at him. "I believe there was a wager involved, and you won." Maybe it should have pricked at his pride, but it didn't. The Mist definitely hadn't minded losing that fight. Still, that didn't mean they couldn't have a rematch.

Ever swayed absently on his feet, blinking around them at the training fields like he didn't quite know where he was. After a moment, he smoothed hair back out of his face and, in one smooth motion, summoned his weapon. He still looked a bit distracted as he shifted his grip on Amory's sheath, twisted the blade around in his hand, and considered Zeke. Wagers. Tempting, though his mind probably didn't go where the other man would want. Instead, he thought about getting uninterrupted time, a cease to the sudden burst of nagging. "Uh huh. I remember." At least there was a faint quirk of a smile behind it.

"We could make another wager." It was casual, came with a small curl of lips as Zeke watched him summon Amory and finally focus on him. Lagertha followed a moment after, larger and heavy in his hand, and he gave her a quick twirl that made her chain rattle. "You win, I'll leave you to your work for a whole seventy-two hours." It was the absolute longest the Mist was willing to leave Ever to his own devices, knowing the Lifer had a tendency to get into his work to such a degree that he missed meals and sleeping. As far as he knew Ever hadn't quite gone that long without either, but long enough that he kept popping in to drag him away. Much to the taller man's chagrin. "But if I win, you have to take a break." He grinned. "Seventy-two hours away from the books." The axe came up in his hand, pointing at the Life. "Maybe we'll head off island. Do something fun."

It got a very long pause out of Ever, his head tipped to the side and his eyes narrowed like he wasn't entirely sure whether Zeke was on the straight and narrow -- or if there was something up his sleeve, some kind of ace that would be pulled out at the last second. It set him a little off-balance, a frown playing around the edges of his mouth while he watched the other man. "...okay." He shifted his hand around Amory's grip, and adjusted his own stance just a little in preparation. "Sounds like a plan."

Zeke just smiled back at him, a lazy curl of lips as he waited for Ever to agree to the proposed wager. When he did, answer slow, the Mist had to laugh. "It's almost like you didn't trust me." Lager that laughed, high and wild, and Zeke fell into action, charging forward. Ever didn't look quite awake yet though, so instead of a hard swing of the axe, he whipped the chain around to hit the Life on the thigh with the broken handle at the end of it. He still looked out of it, yes -- blinking at Zeke as he approached and certainly not quick enough to get out of the way of that whipping chain, to move to safety. It only nipped at him, though, one brief twitch across him, stinging but not enough to do any real damage... And in return, he smacked Zeke a good one across the back of his thighs with the sheath of his own weapon, twisting away as he passed. "I have kicked your a** at this thoroughly, you know. More than once." HP: 48 DMG: 6 CHG: 1/3

That stung a bit. Zeke winced, laughing lightly as he jerked back and out of range of Ever and his duel wielded weapon. One thing he had to give the other man credit for, he knew how to handle the blade and sheath in a practical and effective way. The blonde fought better than expected, he always had, and the Mist seldom had to worry about him in a battle. "I guess you don't have anything to worry about, then." The stakes of their wager weren't terribly high, not really. Some Zeke wanted, but also something the brunette didn't mind giving away. This was, as usual, just a bit of fun that also served a practical purpose. Still smiling, the shorter man lunged again, this time bringing the ax up in a wide, sweeping arch across the other man's torso. Not close enough to do much damage to his shield, but close enough to touch. HP: 44 DMG: 2 CHG: 2/3

It brought Zeke close enough that, before he pulled away, Ever looped an arm through his elbow and kept him there, to drag the razor sharp edge of his sword up across the other man's shield. Now, at least, he was awake; still just a bit distracted, considering Zeke's face just a moment too long before he let go. "You shouldn't make bets with me., I think." HP: 46 DMG: 5 CHG: 2/3

The loop of their arms made him pause, briefly, brow arching before the sharp slid of the dagger made him wince, sucking a breath past his teeth as he meet dark eyes before Ever was letting him go. Stepping back, he brought the axe up again. "Oh? And why is that?" If his intentions were winning every time, clearly he'd put forth more of an effort to train. HP: 39 DMG;REALLY BRO? "You don't hold up well under the pressure." Ever said it cheerfully, at least: no bite, and he stepped back to match Zeke's posture, head cocked to the side and weapon held up in both of his own hands. The chain rocked, absently, between them as he raised his eyebrows in challenge. "You have no head game." With a straight face, even. HP: 46 DMG: 0 CHG: 2/3

Zeke snorted. "It's not always about winning." At least not on the practice field. It was hard for him to take it seriously, even when they made their wagers, because it wasn't real. Which was, of course, an awful perspective to have. That being said, when he wanted to, when it counted, Zeke knew his way around his weapon just fine. Smile melting into a smirk, the Mist let the handle of his axe slid through his fingers to hit the ground. Then, all at ounce, he jerked it up and around by the chain, swinging it at the other man at full force. HP: 39 DMG: 12 CHG: 3/3

It hit him hard enough that, all at once, Ever lost his footing -- going down in a tumble and a twist that just about knocked the breath out of him entirely. It was sheer luck, more than anything else, that let him hook his own weapon out [chain and all] to catch Zeke around the ankle, trying to drag the other man down with him. Not that hard, but maybe hard enough. HP: 34 DMG: 4 CHG: 3/3

Brows rose as Ever tumbled back, eyes widening just a touch. Surprised, perhaps, or impressed, but gone all at once with a sharp yank to his ankle to wasn't expected in the least. He sent him down in a stumble, butt and elbow hitting the ground hard, and he grunted before it turned into a laugh. The bounce back up was damn near effortless; rolling back against the patched grass before springing up in a practiced curve to land on his feet. "Of course, you haven't been doing much winning since I ranked up." It carried a slight bit, a teasing challenge that matched the smug grin directed down at the other man. "I'd get back up, if I were you." They had their shields, the wards in the fields to protect them. Zeke didn't have to worry about hurting Ever seriously. It meant kicking a man while he was down wasn't quite as underhanded. He didn't kick him, but he did shift his grip on Lagertha to wrap his hand around the whole handle, swinging the broken one around before bringing it down against the blonde's shield.
