Fall was the time for pumpkins, changing leaves, cooler weather, and migrating birds. Out of all the things fall was known for the little girl sitting alone cared about was the migrating birds. Abby would face the cold depths of winter to observed the birds but luckily for the young girl.... This particular fall day was quite pleasant.
The sun was bright in a nearly cloudless sky. The temperature was warm and lovely, it was light jacket weather and judging by the number of people out and about Abby wasn't the only one who thought so. Then again it might have something to do with it being the first clear Saturday after a week and a half of rain. Abby didn't mind the rain as much as the rest of the city, rather it made her homesick. Even after all this time Abby still wanted to return to England. Every night she wished on a star, dreaming about returning to her own country, her mother still alive, but each morning she was still in her own bed and tears staining her pillow. Frankly she was giving up hope.
Even after everything that had happened to her Abby felt no more at 'home' in this city as a bird would in the ocean. She sighed and turned her eyes towards the sky where she could see a few shapes soaring higher and higher. They were too far away to make out but the longing to be just like them settled in her very soul, making her feel heavy...... And warm...... And wet???
Abby glanced down and squealed in disgust as she saw Sherlock's drooling head in her lap. The large dog had come into his own and now looked even more like a wolf as he did at the gangly adolescent stage. "Sherlock get off!" She gently pushed him off and fished out napkins from her bright blue jacket. Luckily the material didn't really leak or the fussy girl would have been really peeved. As it was she ended up win a fist full of slobber filled napkins, still better than the other kind of 'gift' she had to take care off. But that was all part of the responsibility of owning a dog and since Sherlock was a pup from her friend back in England he really was worth all the slobber and doggy breath. Besides he was such a good companion. She smiled and gave the dog a quick ear rub before tossing the napkins in a trash can, "come on Sherlock let's go find some bread so we can feed some birds."
