Lydia had been feeling rather distant for quite a while now, or more specifically, since the time she had become infected and had attacked a fellow hunter with intent to kill him. To cope with feelings of extreme remorse for her actions, however involuntary, she had thrown herself into dealing with copious amounts of paperwork, as it was one of her divisions main duties to do so. From the early dawning hours to very late in the evenings, this was how she had been living her life for weeks, while only allowing herself reprieve for one singular person, the patient and wonderful man she was thrilled to be able to call her boyfriend.

As time went by, she did begin to feel at least a little bit better, until the day came when she almost (but not quite) felt normal again. It was shortly after this that she decided she aught to reintegrate herself to more regular island life, and had sent a text to someone whom she knew she could be comfortable around, inviting him to meet her on the training grounds for a bit of friendly sparring.

With her weapon summoned and her fingers fiddling with the whips long tails, she chewed on her bottom lip while waiting for Oliver to arrive.

When Oliver arrived on the field, it with a sheepish smile.

"S-sorry, I ah... had to stay at the infirmary for a bit, wait my turn to get checked over," he stammered his usual nervous apologies. It had been awhile since he had last seen Lydia, perhaps not since before those giant vines on the island, the ones that brought with them viruses and violence. Oliver had suffered his own physical and emotional wounds that day, and had been coping in a similar manner. Overwork and isolation, the island's cure for all injuries.

It was the first time he had seen Lydia's weapon, and felt a moment's unease. He had never fought against a whip before. But it was a friendly match she had offered. He shouldn't have been worried, except it did remind him of vines...

The boy summoned his own axe, and nervously rubbed the back of his neck. "Um... I-I haven't uh...done any sparring lately... I might be a bit rusty."

She had known about the mission off island in Canada but had opted to stay out of it, not feeling that she was quite ready for action beyond what she could do there on deus just yet. Though she hadn't been there, she had heard her share of what had happened. One of the benefits of being a paper pusher was that she did get to peruse some of the reports as they trickled in.

When Oliver arrived, she offered him a wide smile, feeling genuinely happy to see him, though that smile quickly faltered when he mentioned having been in the infirmary.

"Oh! Oh dear, were you one of the ones out on that mission? Are you okay?" She moved hurriedly towards him, and tripped over an undone shoelace in the process, which caused her to stumble but, thankfully, not fall, so she was able to continue on and close the distance between them, concern etched on her face.

"I heard some things. It must have been dreadful being stuck there, when the portals failed, not knowing when you would be able to come home again." Her eyes darted from his face down his arms and body, and she quickly circled him, reaching out to touch a shoulder lightly, or to pinch at the cloth of his shirt or jacket, and tug on it, as if by doing so she could actually sense whether or not he was seriously injured.

"We can always postpone! You must be fraught with exhaustion, considering how stressful it must have all been! Oh, and what nightmares you likely had to face..." She shuddered, coming to stand in front of him again.

"We can certainly do this another time, if you would like."

Oliver nodded quickly, his cheeks starting to turn pink. "Y-yeah, I was, b-but I'm okay! I should be... um, at least.... Ah!"

He leapt forward as she stumbled, and ended up meeting her half way. "I-it was kinda scary, yeah, I-I... um..." Oliver paused as she circled around him. "I had to drive a car without a license though, and the civilian I found was at least twice my size... I-I'm okay though, not hurt or anything, really... I feel fine."

The kid waited to see if Lydia would give her official 'okay' for sparring, as though the infirmary stay was mostly a formality anyway. Where else did you keep an unconscious hunter until they woke up?

She would have loved to fuss over him more, possibly as a tactic to prolong this moment before the one where they would be raising their weapons against each other. No matter how friendly the spar, or how much it could teach her about how to wield Rorric properly, it was still all a bit awkward for her, and only served to remind her that her place wasn't always going to be of one who stays behind a desk piled high with documents and reports.

But she knew she needed to stop herself. He wasn't a child. Not a precious baby boy like she had once called him. He was her superior, an adult man, one who was nervous at times (such as now) but still proven to be strong and capable when it was needed.

"Well...If you're okay, than." She smiled again, but it did not light up her face quite like it once used to, and she let her hand drop back to her side, her other still clutching the handle of her whip. "I guess we should begin?"

She would wait for him to be ready before darting forward, an attempt at confidence made, and perhaps even succeeded, as she landed a sharp lash against his shield.

There were some benefits to be had when suffering from a near-constant nervous state. Oliver nodded and readied himself, but it was those finely tuned senses that picked up on Lydia's change in body language first. She was uncertain too, reluctant, but when she finally made up her mind the action was fast, and Oliver had no hope for dodging the sharp stinging whip.

He yelped, more in surprise than pain, his free arm raised to take the brunt of the attack. It was becoming a bad habit, readily sacrificing the limb to keep his body safe. That arm was growing scars faster than the rest of him.

"S-sorry!" he squeaked, retaliating with a slow swing of the axe. In many ways the massive weapon was unexpected for one so timid, judging by the way the kid cowered and stammered something small and equally flighty might have been more appropriate. But Jökul was heavy and devastating, slow to start, grounding Oliver firmly in his present circumstances and ensuring he had the determination to fight before any serious damage could be done.

The tails of her whip had found their mark and connected with far more force than she had anticipated, and she instantly felt bad even though she knew that Oliver's shield could surely take it, and that he had likely barely felt it at all beyond several light stings. She might have apologized herself, and even had her mouth open to do so, when her opponents axe swung around towards her, so instead all she managed was a flinch and a gasp as she raised her arm in defense, while flailing her whip at the same time, perhaps managing to graze his hand with one of the tails just a split second before the axe clipped into her shoulder.

And then he was the one apologizing to her, and she rapidly shook her head. "No, no! It's fine, I'm fine!" She said, all while retreating a couple of paces, feeling a sudden strong urge to put some distance between herself and that swinging blade.

Oliver relaxed slightly, despite the lash striking once more. It would be okay, fighting was literally what hunters were made for. Sparring was like practicing a sport. It might hurt a little, they would probably end up sore if they overdid things, but it was safe here on the training field. They could refine those attack movements here on the island so they would become automatic out in the field.

His slash was faster the second time, the axe building up momentum, and he quickly closed the distance Lydia had created. The air whistled slightly through the ridges in it's skeletal structure as it moved. The weapon was unapologetic, but Oliver had to struggle not to apologize once more.

Despite backing away, Lydia could not hope to avoid having Oliver's weapon collide into her, hard enough to send her tripping backwards several more steps, before landing on her rear end. She scrambled back to her feet quickly, however, only letting herself stay down for a second, not wanting to put herself at further disadvantage.

Her hands were shook slightly as she took in a deep breath, while reminding herself that this was okay, she was fine, that the axe smashing into her had only hurt for a moment. Rorric chattered away in her head, reassuring, giving advice, telling her when to move.

Now. Now!

Her step back towards Oliver hesitated, and then followed through, as she acted on pure adrenaline and barreled towards him (as much as one as small as her could barrel towards anyone), swinging her whip in a roundhouse when she was near, very near, hoping this time that being too close would make it harder for him to hit her again.

Oliver suddenly found himself backing up in a big hurry. He was reminded of a turning point in his gaming life, when he realized instead of dodging away from monsters, he would avoid their hits more often by dodging towards them. This time he was the monster. Lydia was too close, and he couldn't get a good swing.

Not only did the whip deliver a stinging blow, but he ended up clipping her with the long handle of the axe instead of the heavy blade. A poor retaliation on his part. He didn't have enough training to lash out with a free fist, and he probably couldn't have hit Lydia like that anyway, so he tried to back away and regain that optimal distance his axe favoured.

Her new strategy seemed to garner a favorable result, so Lydia was intent to stick with it, except that Oliver perhaps on to her, and was backing away with great haste. She attempted to follow, swinging her whip again, but this time the multi-tails only managed to graze him as he made his retreat, and she was left just out of reach once more.

Huffing out a breath that blew wayward strands of curly blue hair out of her eyes, she attempted to follow, stumbling and tripping over both her own two clumsy feet, and the laces on her boots that she still hadn't deemed necessary to tie back up.

Although he had geared up for a heavy swing, deemed necessary to just save face after his earlier distance errors, Oliver knew his friend's stumbles made for the perfect opening. But instead of letting the axe swing cleanly, his resolve faltered.

He pulled back slightly at the last minute, and darted backwards. There was no way he could take advantage of Lydia's untied laces. He could only hope she tied them up properly for missions, it would be a horrible situation if they were in real danger.

"Ah, a-are you... d-did you want to... uh..." He stammered nervously, eyeing the laces as he stepped back again.

Even with Oliver purposefully withdrawing his attack, the axe packed quite a wallop, and Lydia let out an undignified squeak as she was, again, thrown back.

"Hm?" She blinked, and straightened. "Oh! Oh no it's fine, really! See?" She made a show of running towards him again, whip held high.

....And then she tripped and landed in the dirt.

"Owwwwww...okay, okay. I'll tie them..." She slowly pushed herself into a sitting position to do just that.

She might have accidentally hit Oliver on the foot on her way down.

Oliver yelped and darted backwards. Once he was sure Lydia was more focused on shoelaces than the sparring match he rubbed his shin where that last smarting blow had struck. Her accidents were particularly painful today...

He waited until the laces were tied up, and she was more or less ready to resume. "O-okay, I'm gonna... um... Look out!" He warned, and with a mechanical click the axe blades shifted to resemble something more like a large, single-edged sword. Unlike it's previous form, it only took one hard swing for the weapon to reach a dangerous speed. And Oliver was too close to Lydia to miss.
