He had been in alternate states of consciousness and unconsciousness so much that this time when he awoke, everything was still a blur. Peter was sure he was dead for certain, but for some reason he was not hurting, despite the bandages stained with dried blood indicating otherwise.

Where was he?

The highway stretched out in front and behind him, disappearing into the horizon with no end in sight.

Was he alone?

Peter looked around, scouring the pile up of cars around him.

… There was someone he wanted to see...

[Tower - Garden]

There was still time.

In the garden he waited, vines gatherings under the tree.

Here he waited, because knew he would find her.

Hello. A single vine crept up to caress the other. Glad to see you, as always.

It was against so many of the rules, and was probably extremely inadvisable aside from that, but Caroline couldn't help it. If she had forgotten something so important, then the ones who were not yet home might have forgotten where home was, so she was restless until she went looking. She told herself she wouldn't be gone long.

For a while, she found no sign of anyone, and hoped it meant that they would all be there when she returned. Preparing to turn around, she took one last look--and finally saw something moving through the haze.

"Who's there?" she called out, keeping her voice as low as she could.

-

[Tower - Garden]

'And you.' A single leaf curled over the vine that touched her; nothing else was properly gentle. 'I've learned a new meaning of see. Have you learned anything?'

The way she 'spoke' was so casual that it hardly seemed that she was not the same human woman she'd always been, but just a moment of contact proved how scarcely she was maintaining composure. She was still wound tightly into the shape of herself, but beyond her exterior was panic and uncertainty.

Not so different from before.

He could feel something move around him, but he wasn't sure. He couldn't be, after the last few days of madness and paranoia. Peter clutched his head as he tried to focus, falling back to old habits of rationalization. He didn't itch, nor was he feeling sick. Not infected, and not crazy.

Good.

The man took a few steps towards the cars, wondering if he could find a ride.

Then he heard her voice, but turned around to find nothing.

Imagining things again?

Memories at the hospital flooded back to him, how her voice had told him to do things, and how he had been wrong to blame her. The problem was with him.

Something brushed past, and this time he did not hesitate to retaliate.

And for the nth time that day, Peter found himself knocked out cold.

[Tower - Garden]

I too, have seen a few things,” his voice was gentle, and a few more vines moved in to wrap themselves around her form tenderly. “And I've learned a bit more about you too.

The vines that held onto her were not tight, but firm in their intention of not letting her go. He wasn't running away this time.

I am sorry,” he apologized for his words from before at the hospital, back when he could not understand, “You're not a monster, Caroline.

He continued to hold onto her, taking in her emotions of panic and uncertainty. “I'm afraid too,” he smiled. It didn't take form, but the signal was sent. “But now, not so much.

As soon as she began to approach the figure in the fog, Caroline learned exactly why this was both against the rules and extremely inadvisable. Unlike Peter, she froze when the imperceptible thing moved past her, immobilized by the panic of knowing something was there. Something was there and it was after her.

But it wasn't. She stood there, holding her breath for the inevitable, but it didn't return.

Her senses slowly returned, and as her mind filled with thoughts other than survive, she realized that the person wasn't standing where she'd last seen them. Any remnants of fear over the invisible creature were discarded, her focus now solely on reaching the body on the ground.

"Peter." The anger that she felt when she recognized him was completely and utterly hypocritical. She knelt beside him, cautiously shaking his shoulder. "Peter, can you hear me? Peter--wake up."

-

[Tower - Garden]

For him to touch her and hold he like this, even as they were, Caroline believed that he truly must have learned something more. At the very least, he seemed to understand a bit better - or had discovered some truth in what she'd consistently been trying to assert to him.

Her form shifted and tightened as she considered his apology and the words that came after it.

'I'm sorry too. I set her free.' She offered a flicker of a recent memory, of the remnants of her hands pulling the vines away from her daughter, of her being handed to someone more corporeal. 'But I don't feel so different. I don't know what I am.'

She brushed over the feeling of the smile, inspecting it curiously.

'How do I make you less fearful now? I make less sense to myself than I did before--and I thought that knowing would be different.'

He first became conscious of her voice, and if not for being shaken awake he would have passed it off as a dream. Peter opened his eyes, staring straight at her as he laid there.

Is this a dream?

His hand reached out to touch her, brushing her hair aside as he glanced her cheek.

It seemed real.

Hello,” he blinked. A smile. And then, a kiss.

- - -
[Tower - Garden]

You are Caroline.” Kercher, or Kendall, that didn't matter. “Perhaps not quite the Dean of the faculty, but a kind guardian of the university.” There was a laugh.

He paused, processing the memory of her daughter. “You've done well,” he affirmed gently.

Because,” he spoke after a while, “I can see you. And through you, I see me too. And the same must go otherwise.” They were not completely lost to Creation, yet. “I'm glad I met you.” The vines moved to stroke her form tenderly, as he moved in to close the distance.

And now that we know, what is there to fear? In this moment, I am me, and you are you. And whatever happens it the future will not erase this simple truth.

Well, he was certainly awake. And Caroline was fairly confident that he had a concussion.

Which she then irresponsibly took advantage of, if that did happen to be the case.

"Hello," she replied, once she decided that it was probably best to let him breathe. As her bright green eyes peered down at him, her hands planted on the ground right by each of his sides, she looked the part of a cat who had just caught a mouse.

"Why are you lost?" The question was part accusation, part curiosity. "Did you forget where your home is?"

-

[Tower - Garden]

Her discomfort was palpable as she adjusted to the feeling of these things being known, but eventually she settled, trusting that he was as accepting of it all as he seemed. Still, her form was just a little smaller, having made an attempt to shrink in on itself for the brief time she considered disappearing.

'Of everything you've said, I'm most happy that you can see how I see you. It wasn't fair.' The vines of her arm looped carefully around his, their ends snakelike as they ventured out beyond where she'd touched. 'You weren't being fair to you.'

She leaned against him in a way that felt like resting her head on his shoulder.

'In knowledge I only find more to fear and less to find. But one truth isn't so frightening. And I like your simple truth. So I would like to think of it now, and learn all of what it means.'

For a few moments all he could go was stare blankly at her with a smile plastered on his face.

That was definitely another knock out.

He made no attempt to break free from their current arrangement, content to lie there and enjoy the view.

Hm, so that you could find me?” he answered with a giggle. There was definitely a concussion, and something more in play here.

Home is where you are,” he answered more sincerely this time. He shifted to sit himself up, pulling her into an embrace in the process.

I guess we should head back, the children are waiting.

[Tower - Garden]
He could sense her discomfort, but continued to hold onto her patiently. He was still here, and nothing he knew would make him run away. Vines reached out to touch her form, coaxing her to relax.

I could say the same about you too,” the vines of his arm returned the gesture, “Forgive yourself too?

I suppose it is in our nature to fear having nothing more to know,” he drew her in, petting her comfortingly, “But when we find resolution... perhaps we could learn to embrace it.

Once again incapable of denying pleasures for the sake of being responsible, Caroline let the hug continue for as long as she could.

"Is where I--Peter, you don't even know what that means!" She scoffed and laughed, but seemed to take it as a compliment, keeping one arm wrapped around him as she moved to stand with him.

"Good thing I found you. Out here. Lost. Forgetting about home." Mindful of his injured state, she gave him a gentle nudge. "They'd miss you. We all would."

[Tower - Garden ]

His efforts to soothe her began to work, as she took each shared portion of his calm to dilute her fears within it. Most of her began to lessen the intensity of their inward pull on themselves, bringing her gradually to a more accepting state, more willing to consider what he was saying to her.

She was silent for a while, and even her 'thoughts' were hardly more than a low hum. Each touch was noted, and she responded each time with something akin to a small ping of appreciation.

'Forgive myself.' It was clear she had never considered it. Before now, she hadn't felt much like she'd done something wrong. 'All right. For me, you will be fair to yourself. For you, I will be fair to myself. Then it's for ourselves, and for each other. Does that resolve things well enough?'

He remained thoughtfully silent when they got to their feet. “They all grow up eventually,” he gave a wry smile. There was a strange feeling of a chapter being turned, and the next question was where were they all going to go from here. As each year passed, he would say goodbye to old faces, and greet hello to new ones. It was a poignant feeling.

Peter had somehow trudged his way to one of the cars lying by the highway, picking out a particular one with 9s on its number plate.

You might like this one,” he laughed, opening the door for her before settling in.

The ignition key was left in the key slot, but he refrained from turning it yet. There was just one thing...

Caroline, I-” he paused to fumble for something in his pockets.

For You.

He didn't need her to choose, it was enough for her just to remember him. Peter looked away as quickly as he handed it to her, starting the car up in the meantime. The radio sputters to life as they began to drive.

Their time was nearing an end, but he betrayed no emotions of sadness. He could feel himself slipping away, even as he entwined his vines with hers.

I promise.

And that was enough.
