She was composed of strange and contorted plants and yet that wasn't the strangest thing that had happened to her in these last few days. Her life had become a strange and ever changing place where she could never tell what lay around each corner. Her only constant companion through it all had been Ras and she had grown to rely on him, without him here with her, she felt hollow and hopeless, at a loss with what to do with herself.

So she did the only logical thing, she looked for him, because he had to be somewhere in here and she had to hope he would know her and would be known to her when she found him. She could only tell herself that he'd be here because surely fate wasn't that cruel, surely if there was any sort of fate in the world it would bring them together again what had to be this one last time.

And it was the last time wasn't it? There wasn't anything human of her left to go back to, this was just the breath of freedom before she became part of that twisted seething mass of "us" and lost who she was entirely. She didn't want to, but it felt like an inevitability, like no matter how fast she ran it would catch up, she was made of it and owed everything to it.

She wandered because first she wanted to find him but instead found a dining room, vast and splendid, set for a dinner long rotted. She investigated it, touching the festered food which did not disgust her the way it should have and wondering why in such a strange place they had even set up such a meal and who it had been for. Perhaps Ras would have come here to scavenge she thought hopefully.

But it seemed he hadn't come here at all.

Still, on the floor by the table there was a piece of paper, torn from what seemed like a picture book which told a story, seemingly from a children's novel or something akin to it.

Quote:

Page 4: The serpent was thankful, and blessed upon those few humans its gift of knowledge and the hunger for the beginning and the end. At last, having returned to it's original glory, it parted upon them one final knowledge, when it is time to accept their own end for another beginning. It was then that the serpent consumed itself, and while it's shape was that of a serpent, it's form was that of a concept. From the concept, there was nothing left but the leaves and branches, which began new life of its own.

She puzzled over the words, curious what it could mean and moreover what it could mean for her, here at the end of her own story, uncertain that there ever would be a new beginning.

Gilda looked over the next page, tattered and torn but still legible.

Quote:

Page 1: There once was a serpent and it was very lonely. "Why was I created?", the serpent asked itself. "For what reason do I exist?" It had no understanding of beginning nor end, and because of it it developed a terrible hunger. It ate the sun and moon and everything in the sky.

She felt the same way as the serpent had once, she understood its hunger for understanding. She felt like her choice of career had reflected it too, like she'd openly been searching for the answers to questions that perhaps she would never find the answers to.

It didn't mean she'd ever stop.

A series of careful flowers crept over Gilda's hand, where she leaned against the table. He read the strange (and to him, meaningless) book over her shoulder. The petals were hesitant, brushing questioningly against her vines.

Is it you? he asked.

Gilda was a creature not of flowers but sharp leaves and spines, all branched horns and wild twisted branches that reached up like antlers. She nodded and there was a rustle of long slender leaves as she turned to look at the figure who had touched her.

There was a moment when she eyed him and wasn't sure how she knew she was even dealing with a him, inclining her strange horned head to one side.

"Ras?" she asked, and she wasn't sure why she thought of him first of all.

"Thank God. You're here too. I thought..." He embraced her, the flowers bending their heavy heads and intertwining with her vines, both of them less...solid than usual.

THe intertwining happened thoughtlessly and easily.

"I keep disobeying you," he whispered, "I keep getting lost. I've been having dreams...am I still dreaming?"

She twisted back, the automatic response to being near him, almost falling into him in relief, she had been all coiled tension and the fear of losing herself but when it came to him she didn't mind what she lost, so long as she gained him.

He made her feel strong, as if she could handle even this.

"Does it matter if we are dreaming any longer?" she asked. "If we are it is together."

Her grip tightened around him, her strong branches seizing his petals and twisting tight around them, not enough to destroy them but enough to make them bow and bend in her grip. "I will not pretend you weren't naughty, that you didn't disobey by being separated. But you are here now and so am I."

"I don't want to be part of it. I don't belong to them. I only belong to you. Oh, what have they done, your body," Ras mourned, drawing back to stroke and curl his flowers, submissively bowed, around her vines.

As if somewhere there was blood and skin, still.

"What's left of us? I dreamed- oh, terrible things, I did terrible things... in your name, I'd never k-killed anybody before. But I... I had so much. But all I could think of was avenging what- what they had done to you. Did you see the doors? And then..." he softened, "there was a Kingdom. A beautiful kingdom," he bent to bring the petals of his lips to her hand.

"Gilda," he said the word, and he knew it was often forbidden, but went on, "After, if you ever wanted to- if, I mean, if it had all...if we find our way back again. You...you wouldn't have to lose your credentials. It's...it's just me, it's my identity. I took...I don't have them with me. Y-you remember Daniel, he was killed near the beginning. They have...folders. His social security number- I could be different. I could change. I could be him, and then..."
