Quote:
[ The grand dining room ]: A beautiful table spans the center of the room, marble tiling mostly in tact. It seems almost surreal to see such a normal human, albeit luxurious, area in the center of this all. There is food on the table, but it is long rotting. It seems someone has set aside some earl grey tea as well.

You see the ripped page of a picture book and it reads as the following:

Two vine-made figures convened in the same room, though not at the same time. It was Adelaide who happened upon the other late, her head still buzzing with the memories of those who had once been in a cage, her brow furrowed. Thorns pressed against one another like teeth clenched. This was her destiny, her fate, but it did not mean she suffered it lightly.

(Time heals all wounds, but who said they had time? Even now she could feel herself slipping, if she was not constantly vigilant.)

The other figure was quiet, smaller, more condensed and more recognizable as human. She traced the torn page before her not with vines but with fingers, because she couldn't simply give up what she had known even for a new form. When Adelaide drew near, the slithering noise of leaves and thorns on marble wood startled her to back away.

"Relax, kid," Adelaide said. She...was a kid, right? Looked short enough at least. Noting the torn page, she grew curious. "What are you looking at?"

The other one was silent, though it wasn't as if she was afforded complete privacy anymore. There were wallflowers in her eyes, small and almost drooping things. Sighing, Adelaide picked up the page and read it for herself.

Quote:
There once was a serpent and it was very lonely. "Why was I created?", the serpent asked itself. "For what reason do I exist?" It had no understanding of beginning nor end, and because of it it developed a terrible hunger. It ate the sun and moon and everything in the sky.

Huh. More strange clues, she guessed.

"Any idea who left this here?"

The kid (the girl, she corrected) was quiet still, but at least this time she gave a shrug.

"Figures."

Well, if it was torn out, that had to mean there was a whole book, right? And if it was about a serpent..."Feh," Adelaide murmured to herself before speaking up. "Hey, kid, did you find any more pages like this?"

The girl shook her head.

"Well, there's probably more around here somewhere. Help me look." It was a fancy room to be sure, but it didn't have a lot of nooks and crannies to really hide things in. It was a damn shame about the food, though; she wondered who had been here before.

Eventually she caught sight of a page and plucked it up. "Over here, got something." (It was only right to share, she supposed.)

Quote:
Consumed by hunger again, the serpent wandered the world. Whatever it ate would immediately come out of its gashed sides. The oceans and lands ran thick with green, and the humans took pity on the serpent, offering eventually to fill its wounds with leaves and branches.

Adelaide squinted. "Think it's out of order," she observed, tapping the corner page written 3. The first page had been appropriately labeled as page 1. Time to go searching around some more.

"Why would they fill it with leaves and crap?" It was the first time the other one had spoken up since she had first gotten there.

"Eh, it sounds like a fable, right? Child's picture book. s**t doesn't always make sense, but I guess it's because the snake ate everything else."

The girl remained skeptical (after all, it was said to have eaten the sun and the moon as well, so why would trees get left out of all things?) but continued her search. She was the one to uncover the missing second page for them.

Quote:
Eventually the gods took notice of this serpent and sliced it into thousands of pieces. It did not die, but simply writhed as every part of it was released. As time passed, all the pieces eventually gathered together again, but where it was severed there would be thick wounds, forever bleeding green.

"So, what, they killed it just 'cause it didn't know better?" the girl accused. "Bullshit."

"Gods suck like that, mon chou. Ever heard of Zeus? He used to ******** anything that moved and a few that didn't. It's kind of their schtick to be flawed."

(( rolled a 4 on page 2 but putting info here ))

The last page was found relatively quickly, as if begging to be joined with the rest.

Quote:
The serpent was thankful, and blessed upon those few humans its gift of knowledge and the hunger for the beginning and the end. At last, having returned to it's original glory, it parted upon them one final knowledge, when it is time to accept their own end for another beginning. It was then that the serpent consumed itself, and while it's shape was that of a serpent, it's form was that of a concept. From the concept, there was nothing left but the leaves and branches, which began new life of its own.

Well, that was a little head scratcher. What was the final bit of knowledge given at death exactly? But Adelaide frowned as the concept of a neverending circle came back. Were they always going to get haunted by it?

"Feh. Thanks for helping, kid," she told the girl as she put the pages in order back on the table.

"Taysia. It's Taysia."
