Megan walked the highway with every nerve on edge; there wasn’t a lot around, but undying could spring up out of nowhere at basically any time. She was walking away from that huge pileup she’d seen when she woke up, sticking to the wide open expanse of road as she walked along the centre line. This way she’d at least see anything coming from the brush. This was probably the way back to town… if she was wrong she’d just have to turn around.

She didn’t travel all that far before she bumped into something. But when she looked, there was nothing. At least, nothing visible. She stuck out her hand tentatively and found odd resistance in the air in front of her, and an ethereal whinnying sent her jumping back with her weapon drawn. Was this enemy… invisible? What the hell? She was already paranoid of things that simply moved fast, how was she supposed to defend herself against something you can’t even hope to see coming?

She flailed her weapon wildly, hoping to make contact with something as she backed away from where she’d felt the thing. At first there was nothing, only the sound of her footsteps and her breathing and the whistle of her rod sailing through the air in increasingly panicked strokes. How was she going to survive this one? No one was even around to come help. She didn’t even know how big this thing was. She was suddenly bowled over by something, landing hard on the ground before she felt it kicking at her. Each impact sent her tumbling back to the asphalt; she didn’t even know which direction her attacker was striking from as it pummeled her into the ground.

It was a miracle she was able to hold on to her rod through the onslaught. A hard kick to her side dropped her hard on her back and she took a swing on a hunch. She felt the rod connect, heard the thing scream, and then, nothing. She struggled to her feet and flailed her rod in every direction she could for a few moments just to be sure it was gone. She’d taken a hell of a beating and she was in bad shape. What even was that?

She stumbled around the area in an injured haze before something shiny caught her eye. A needle? With thread? Maybe if she could just pull herself back to base, she might get a close enough look at it to determine what to do with it. Hopefully it could be sterilized to sew up a couple of the bad cuts. Her entire body hurt and she wasn’t in any condition to fight anything anymore. Hopefully there wouldn’t be any more undying on her way back.
