Images flash before her eyes. Her mundane days as a simple English teacher, whiling away the hours with lectures and grading papers. The day her world came to an end upon that lonely rooftop where she bawled her eyes out until she had no tears left. The day she had found sanctuary at Emerston University, picking out her number four jersey with a sense of purpose. Her faction leaders... Scott... Autumn... various people she had grown to care for.
Everything would come to an end soon. Nothing else matter besides the simple euphoria that seemed to envelop the woman...
A strange feeling stirred within her. A tiny voiced, pleading to fight. Slowly, the voice grew louder and more clear. What did it mean? Her memories were...?
Matilda awoke to find nothing. She was nothing. At least, she could see nothing when she looked down at herself. What had become of her? Could she really be considered human now? Panic rose as she tried to flail, hoping that something would happen.
That something appeared in the form of vines wrapping around her. At first, she tried to ward off the vines, only to find they weren't harming her. They were giving her what she wanted: a body. As the final tendrils creep into place, Matilda took a few delicate steps. It was difficult, but she could move around freely with her newly crafted body. She had to try to find her own, though.
Edging forward, it wasn't long before she came across something familiar. Was this her body? No... this was someone else... this was the being that had saved her on the highway. Only her eyelids and nose could be seen past her blue scarf over her face while the rest of her body was being consumed by the vines around her as she slept.
Reaching down, the woman was mildly surprised when the growths drifted away from her touch. Would they listen to her? Reaching in further, she pulled the nightmare out. She seemed so small, how had she managed to tote Matilda around so easily?
Matilda had to get her away. The nightmare wasn't safe here. Trudging through the corridor, she gave silent thanks that the vines seemed to respond to her wishes, creating a path for her. As she climbed down the stairs, she found it harder to maintain her form. Still, she pressed on, if only to give the small one in her arms a chance to survive.
As she reached the bottom, figures could be seen in the fog. They were friends of the nightmare, surely they would help her.
Using the last bits of her strength and willpower, Matilda held the small nightmare out to the figures. They reached for her and took her from Matilda's unraveling arms. She couldn't stay, she had to go back. At least she had completed her task and had gotten the nightmare to safety. Her kindness had been repaid.
Looking around, Matilda took in the view of what would be her final home. She knew that she wasn't long for this world before she became a mindless cog again. At least she could make use of the time she had left to explore, and possibly find some closure.
