Not too far from the city, there's an easily accessible stream in the woods.
People occasionally come here to fish or swim, but it is mostly abandoned.

Elin Dera

What am I missing?

Elin turned the glowing stone over in her hands. She cleared her throat and responded, "Me? I'm afraid of some things, but big-a** trees is not one of them." She made sure not to stumble over any protruding objects on the ground, but her eyes were fixed on the blueish glow of the rock. Sure, the ginger-haired girl had held them before, but each one was a little different, and they'd always mystified her. It was just a light source or a rock to most, but she very much liked them. She recalled that she had a small drawstring bag among her things that held many shards she'd collected from the underground, on the ground, or from vendors who found smaller pieces to be of no worth.

As the two girls walked side-by-side in the bluish hue of the stones, Wren noticed Elin staring almost lovingly into the light hers was producing. The brunette held hers up higher to examine it, this one being somewhat larger than others she'd handled before.

She eyed its sharp edges closely, getting a strange feeling that it's shape was familiar to her somehow. The longer she focused on the glowing stone, the more she felt like she'd seen it before. She tried to hide the perplexed look on her face, walking somewhat slower now. "Huh," she breathed out, reaching with her free hand to touch the gem around her neck, eyes widening a bit. "That's odd.."

Elin noted Wren slowing down. This didn't really bother her until her friend stopped, which quickly forced her to do the same, as going ahead alone would likely get her lost. She started pocketing her hair clips, deciding that having her hair down would be fine for the water. The girl turned her head to see Wren holding the stone and her necklace mixed with her expression, causing her brow to furrow. ". . . What is it?"

Wren held the stone further away from her abdomen and cupped her hand around her necklace. It was.. it was glowing faintly! Had it absorbed the light from the illuminated stone? "Elin! Do you see this?" she exclaimed, moving her hand away from her necklace to make the small stone visible. It was indeed glowing lightly, casting a soft bluish hue over the dark brown fabric of her sweater.

"I.. I think my rock may be one of these!" It was so odd that she had never noticed before, having used the torch stones many times on night expeditions. "Why doesn't it glow indefinitely like the others, though?" she looked up at Elin, eyes wide and confused. She hadn't been introduced to the glowing rocks until she was in her second year of training, and was almost certain they weren't available for most civilian use before that time. How had her mother attained one? Her mind raced with questions, brow furrowed.

"Holy crap...!" Earth crunched under her feet at she came over to Wren, holding her own stone close to it then taking it away, watching the light grow even brighter before returning to a normal glow. "This is definitely one of the stones. They only hold energy for a few hours, a few days max, if there isn't enough together in one place. It's like a little secret on its own. They tend to be hard to just get in that size and shape. Not exactly a common jewelry component."

"My mom gave this to me just before she died. I think that was something like three or four years before the military was mass-distributing these," Wren hesitated, watching Elin hold her stone up near her necklace and then move it away, studying the glow.

"Do you know anything about where these came from? I know you aren't supposed to talk about classified stuff but-" she looked down. "If this thing is supposed to be protecting me, what do you think makes it different from the other stones?" Maybe it sounded silly, but her mother had seemed so promising and sure when she told Wren the stone would keep her safe. She'd believed it, deep down.

Her thick, long eyelashes caught the light of the glow. "Wren..." She looked at the stone. Some of the upper-class had tried to buy it as fancy jewelry, but that lasted a short time, as they were disappointed by the need to recharge the smaller stones. "I just haven't really seen any in that shape, before." Elin held her own stone close to herself. "I've had a dream where my body began to turn into this stuff. It's...not a normal substance. But-- how about this," There was a glint in her eyes, smiling a little. "I get into the Survey Corps, and we can go somewhere private...then I'll tell you what I know. It's not much, but...it's something to look forward to, right?"

Wren grinned at Elin through the glow and gave a quick nod. "Next scheduled expedition is a few months from now. We'll have plenty of time to talk about stuff like this while we train, right?" She touched her necklace again briefly before holding her stone forward and beginning to walk again. She pictured Elin, encased in the glowing stones, lit up like a star in the sky. She'd draw that, rather than the redhead in a dress, she decided.

She could see the clearing that opened into the riverbank, and the sound of the running water was becoming more audible. She smiled, feeling excited that she was out, not alone, and had things to look forward to. "Thanks, Elin. For.. for being up on the wall yesterday. I'm glad we met." Her cheeks reddened some, eyes shifting to the slightly grassy cobble beneath them, which was still down-trodden by horse drawn carts. The canopy of trees prevented much sunlight from reaching the forest floor, so the grass that grew on the path never managed to get very tall.

"Hopefully they don't shift that timing according to me. But yes, we should have time, I imagine." She followed close to Wren, wondering about their connections to the lovely rocks.

The water was almost black, and the sound of the water flowing was quiet and smooth-sounding. It was peaceful, and she was sure that she saw a blink or two from a few fireflies. Elin gave Wren a light and playful shove in the arm. "What is this, a date? C'mon, I would've had to stop you from disturbing the peace by walking everywhere eventually, anyways..." She turned aside, her own cheeks heating a little, holding the stone to her heart. "I'm glad I met you, too." She closed her eyes and exhaled softly.

Wren laughed, steadying herself from swaying when Elin gave her a joking push. "A date? Maybe," she winked, setting her satchel down and placing her torch stone carefully atop it.

Jogging up to where the grass gave way to slabs of rock that spilled out over the riverbed, she sighed at the familiar sight. The riverbed was crested with smaller pebbles and sparse aquatic foliage that danced with the current. Climbing up onto the ledge of rocks, she looked over the rippling surface of the water with childlike wonder. The sky was crystal clear and the abundance of glittering stars were reflected brightly on the shifting tides, making the river look alive with light and motion. A few fireflies buzzed around the area, offering glints of light against the dark background of the forest.

She smiled brightly, turning back to look at her friend. "Hey, if I didn't walk everywhere you wouldn't have a place to swim," she giggled, hopping down to return to the clearing area. "Wanna make a fire?" she asked, kneeling down to dig around in her bag and pulling out the small box of matches she'd snatched from the tobacco pouch on the way out. "There's plenty of firewood around," she added, glancing around the area. Dead branches lined the edge of the forest, dry and weathered. "We can use the dry rocks on the shore to make a fire bed."

She went ahead collecting branches and left Elin to gather the rocks. Once they had everything together she picked a spot near the side of the river and began forming a circle with the stones and propping the branches up in a conical shape. After adjusting the wood to her liking, she lit a match and carefully dropped it down into the centre of the pile. After a moment or two, the branches began to ignite and the fire cast an orange glow over the surrounding grass.

With the chilly night time breeze, the warmth was a relief and would help them to dry off after they were done swimming. She wiped her hands on the front of her jeans and excused herself into the shadows to put on her shorts. Upon returning to the fire, she pulled her thick sweater over her head and dropped it into the grass next to her bag, along with her jeans. "First one in smells like Titan breath," she called, giggling.

She hurried after Wren. "Well,it'd actually technically be the third date." Elin placed her glowing stone on a large rock, relatively near Wren's things. Since she'd warmed up on the way there, she took off her pants and set them down on the rock, placing the glowing rock on top. With the large shirt looking almost like a dress, it gave her a more feminine, slightly child-like appearance.

"A fire here would be a fine idea, indeed." The girl began gathering dry rocks. She would be embarrassed by the idea of 'maybe' a date, but they'd joked about it enough for Elin to regard most of it as just the two of them giving sass to one another. When her friend returned, she helped dig out and set up the fire pit, standing back as the fire began.

Fire. Another source of light that intrigued her so. It wasn't until Wren called to her that she turned away from it, pulling off her top to reveal her swimsuit. From her muscle tone, it was hard to see how she could really be all that rusty. "Oi, is that a challenge for a race?" The foxy girl wondered how cool the water might be.

Wren paused to adjust the straps of her bra, having grown a bit since she'd last worn it. "Some third date, huh?" she grinned, gesturing around the peaceful setting. She shrugged at Elin's question, rolling her eyes to the side to glance at the rock peak she'd climbed up on to look over the water before. "A race, hm?" she raised an eyebrow, smirking at the idea.

Before giving it much more thought, the tawny-haired woman darted off to the side, leaping up the rock face and diving off in a matter of seconds. The water engulfed her, and the cool contact on her skin was enough to cause goosebumps to erupt over her flesh. She surfaced after a few moments, pushing her thick bangs back and laughing briskly. "Ah, the water's great!" she sighed, digging her toes between the smooth pebbles of the riverbed. The deepest point only came up to Wren's shoulders, so there wasn't much danger since even the current wasn't very swift.

Elin looked alarmed, then scowled. "Really makin' me look bad, there." She followed the route to the rock face, climbing up and jumping in, submerging herself. When she did surface, she had to pull some hair away from her face, slowly pushing herself against the current. "Cold." The ginger was up to her neck, chin touching the fresh-smelling water, and decided to bend her legs slightly so she was almost up to her nose, hair swirling around her face under the water in tendrils.

Wren laughed as Elin plummeted into the cool water. "Hey, you didn't have to give me the idea," she joked, splashing a bit of water at the girl. She looked back over the rocks at the fire, surrounded by their belongings. She had done this before, with her squad during training. One of the guys had told them a scary story and the other two girls ended up scared out of their wits at every little sound that came out of the forest. Wren, along with the guys, had laughed at them, but made sure to keep their minds off of it on the walk back to base. She missed those days.

Ducking back beneath the water, Wren anchored her fingers into the dirt and held herself under, opening her eyes to look up at the sky through the water. The stars and clouds were distorted, looking abstract in the ripples on the surface. She let go and pushed herself back up once she couldn't hold her breath anymore and gasped once she surfaced. "Too cold for you?" She grinned, pushing her hair out of her face again.
