He could tell the fog was... doing something to him. It licked along his bones and made him cold from the inside out. Even Jannisari chittered uneasily in his head. Horace missed her, sometimes, but she no longer spoke to him. Maybe she had nothing more to say. He shook his head and began to work, scanning his surroundings as he slowly picked his way across the desolate, foggy landscape.

Ah, a boy. Possibly fourteen, Horace thought. He rubbed his face. Sighing, he gathered the boy up in a fireman's carry. He wasn't too far from the portal/ Just a retrieve and dump mission. Doable. Horace felt the ache that meant tired lived in his bones. He just had to get them to the portal, dump him through, dump himself through. Then do it again, and again.

The portal cast a blue light across his cheekbones and he heaved the kid off of his shoulders. Stumbling a little, he stepped through.

"We're not in ******** Kansas anymore, Toto." He patted the boy he'd 'rescued' absently on the head. Of course.... this made him Dorothy. After a moment's pause. Horace shrugged. He'd take it. At least Dorothy got sweet shoes and made friends and gave the tin man a heart. Horace frowned and stopped thinking about that.

He had work to do.

Luckily, (or unluckily), distraction arrived with shuddering steps. It neighed out of the fog like some horse of the apocalypse, tall and towering and overgrown with vines. He frowned, debating summoning.

It is not natural for you to accept us?

The voice echoed in his head with the force of migraines. Horace's stomach heaved, his vision blanked, and he almost dropped his civilian burden. One things was sure - he didn't want to accept that thing any time soon. Especially because the word 'accept' only brought to mind rather explicit things. Ugh. Horace paused, debating, but his priority had to be saving the civilian.

He ran.

Horace ran, feet beating out a steady tattoo against the pavement. The buildings, the post boxes, everything behind burst into vines, their green lengths flowing out of any cracks like thing fingers. He did not look back, and instead fond himself on a stretch of long-abandoned highway. The radio crackled to life, giving him a promise of portals to come. Horace cursed and ducked into the first car he saw, flinging the boy into the passenger's seat.

Cool, it still had keys!

Horace started the engine and it turned over once, twice, then ran. He executed a neat exit of the current haphazard parallel parking pileup. And then, Horace ******** floored it.

5. A 2010 Mercedes-Benz convertible. Seriously?! At least it moves really fast and you get to feel the (foggy) wind blowing at your hair while a terrible monstrosity chases after you! (SPEED VALUE +5)

Horace continued to haul a** even after the beast had faded from the rear view mirror. He drove quickly, but with surprising precision, considering h hadn't driven in nearly a year, and soon enough they arrived. Horace lifted Dazs out carefully, feeling him stir.

"Hey, you feeling alright? I can-" He was cut off by a sloppily aimed punch to the nose. Horace grappled with the boy and, by the time he'd once again gone limp in Horace's arm... the portal was gone. <********.
