Evan had left Zack's house before he and his guest had awakened, but he didn't particularly have anywhere to go. It was just one of those 'be out of the house before they woke up and there was that weird morning chit-chat'. Which wasn't uncommon of him; he generally stuck to his own schedule.
…After he made breakfast.
He didn't know what time they were going to wake up at, but he figured they wouldn’t sleep in for too long after the house smelled strongly of bacon and pancakes.
Still, he hadn't stayed to find out; he barely managed to turn off the stove before he was on his way, and he'd really sort of just puttered around between then and a reasonable time to go into work.
So, there he was cleaning an already almost spotless kitchen, preparing for them to open. He heard one of the doors earlier and assumed people were slowly filing in for their shift, but he was happy in his own little domain.
Nice, safe little kitchen, where he didn't have to think about all those giggles, or all those kissing noises, or…
He sighed and scrubbed the counter harder, trying to wipe away a smudge that didn't exist.

Cambria couldn’t wipe the smile from her face. That date had gone better than she had been expecting...and it was just so nice to be able to just focus on enjoying herself without the implications of other sides and her being some sort of terrible person for liking someone…it was just…complicated…but this hadn’t been complicated.
She liked simple, that was for sure.
The breakfast that had been in the kitchen had been delicious, no doubt made by Evan…though the one in question was nowhere to be found…oh well.
She had to go into work, sadly without Zack today as he had the day off…so to work she went. Low and behold…There was Evan. Cambria’s smile grew and she waved. “Hey there, stranger. Thanks for breakfast this morning, it was amazing! Dinner was fantastic last night as well, did you sleep okay?”
Nothing could spoil this mood she was in. She liked this.

The praise to his cooking didn’t go unappreciated, and Evan chanced a quick smile before focusing his attention back on his smudge. "Yeah," he said slowly. "I slept okay."
He was no stranger to the couch, and it was better than some of the other places he'd been found sleeping. Ultimately it was a nice, safe place to sleep, and Zack had expensive taste so it was comfortable to boot.
Cambria, of course, seemed to be in a much better mood than he was in, but he couldn’t blame her. She'd had a good night (or, at least, he'd assumed from what noises and giggles he heard escape through the cracks of the room), and good nights with Zack sort of had that affect on people. He might have slept better if those noises weren't permeating his thoughts, but—sure—after he'd zonked out, he'd slept great. Like a rock.
A few seconds ticked by before Evan realized that the socially polite thing to do was ask the same question to her, so he sputtered, "—And you?"
He wasn't looking at her again, still scrubbing the counter; he didn't have anything against her, just…
All of this was still a little overwhelming.

“Well, my night was really nice. I slept very well, thank you.” She glanced around, then grabbed her apron from the hook on the wall, tying it around her waist with a sigh. “Are you ready for today? I’m hoping to get all the tips since Zack’s off…I always make bank when he’s not here. Maybe we should try to get him fired, what do you say, Ev. We should run this place, don’t you think?”
Cambria looked over at him, wiggling her eyebrows. Sure she was joking…but from a money standpoint…not having Zack around would be fantastic. She liked money…he could always get another job at another bar and together they could have so much money and it would be great.
Right? Right.
“Seriously, what do you say? We can work on an evil plan.”

Evan laughed hesitantly, not quite sure what to say on the matter. "…I don't know, he make a lot more than I do. If he lost his job here, I don't know if he could find another one that pays as well. And then we'd both be out on the street if he couldn’t make rent, so…"
He knew she wasn't serious (probably), but still could have kicked himself. What did he say? He wasn't good at evil plans or scheming, but he didn't want her to think he was stupid or a jerk.
Socializing was so hard, especially when it was with a girl you were pretty sure you had been mostly dumped for. Not that he had anything against her—what did she know?
It's not like anyone had been particularly forthcoming with information.
He half turned to offer her a weak smile, but he knew he probably wasn't making anything better. "…You could probably run this place just fine, though. Everyone seems to listen to you, already. But if anything ever happens and you start running things, don't change my kitchen. You can do whatever you want wherever you want, but this place is mine. And don't fire me, I need this place."

Cambria just blinked, trying to figure out if she should laugh at his joking…or give the poor thing a hug because he wasn’t joking. She chose to do both, a small chuckle, and a hand reached out to grip his shoulder gently.
“If I ever took over this place with my crazy mad skills, I know I wouldn’t want anyone else in my kitchen. Or, your kitchen, whatever. You are what gives this place the great reviews on the food, I just give it the great reviews with the service…so together, this place is totally ours…”
She gave another smile, then shrugged. “It was just a joke you know. I don’t want to get Zack fired so.”
This poor kid really didn’t have many skills in the being friendly department, did he? That was kind of sad, he was so nice.

Evan watched her for a second, glanced at her hand, and then mimicked her smile for a brief second. He seemed to want to believe her, but whatever was holding him back seemed to be a powerful force. He nodded, though turned away just slightly. "People don't come here for the food."
But that wasn't the note he wanted to leave it on, so he drew in a breath and pulled on the smile for another second, glancing over his shoulder before turning back to the counter he was cleaning. "I know it was a joke. And I got it, it was funny. It's just. You know, long night. I didn't sleep so well, so I don't think I'm on my A-game. Sorry. I feel like we only ever talk when I'm making a fool of myself."

“Well…” Cambria glanced around and tried to find something to say. Finally she just nodded. “Well, since I won’t be there tonight, hopefully you can get a good night’s sleep. I’m sorry that I added to you not being on you’re a-game. And I think you’re a great guy, Evan so…so don’t worry about even thinking about making a fool of yourself. I’d like to be friends so…one day we’ll hang out, okay?”
She gathered the rest of her supplies for the day and glanced back at him as she was heading to the front of the restaurant. “Just so you know, Ev. I came here for the food. I thought it was amazing and delicious so, don’t say nobody comes here for the food, because that’s a lie, friend.”
With that Cambria disappeared into the front and said no more. There wasn’t much more that needed to be said so…that was that.
