Ugh what a horrible day. Her back ached and her head and honestly just about everything ached.
Granny escaped the chaos for just a few rounds at a game. Simple. She would like to bring her grandsons over to play this game one day.
Except probably not here. a different mall, far away. She was beginning to hate it here. Too many bad memories.
She dreamed instead of a better future. Maybe one where her grand kids spent a week with her, and she baked apple pies, and made a nice chicken dinner. Where she broke out the apple sauce and vanilla ice cream. Where they sat around drinking mountain do together as they played the night away.
Where a nice fireplace warmed the hands and heart while hot chocolate warmed their stomachs.
Perhaps she was just remembering that day years ago went hey went up to that old cabin. the dish soap was gone but they had a beautiful view of the frozen lake. It wasn't frozen enough to play on but the kids walked along the edge anyways.
Winter was coming, the trees were turning and loosing their leaves. She wished she could go out more to see it. The only real reminders were the costumes lined up in the ticket booth.
She sighed and stretched. ok that was enough. She was ready to hit things.

Once the balls started coming her dreams of home drifted away. Instead she batted on after another into bucket after bucket. She was good yeah, but not good enough to fight those things forever.
Maybe not good enough to ever make it home. She may never again see those quiet days where the hardest thing was not burning the chocolate. And the most fretful decisions were which turkey to take home for thanksgiving.
But hell if she didn't keep trying for it.
