[Step 2]
Well, okay. Pelagion didn't think he had gotten too far from the portal. The instruction manual made it clear that this was a piece of chocolate ice scream cake – he just had to get the human to the portal. Cool. No problem.
Pelagion hefted the scrawny human onto his shoulder and started carrying him, fireman style. The fog was gross and blocked his vision, but his sword glinted enough in the crappy light to give him a sense of what was forward and what was not.
Pelagion was not at full strength, he was pretty sure, but he wrote it off as, well, first time in the human world and he hadn't done his workouts since he left home. He was so glad to not do those anymore – he'd never seen why he should bother.
Finally, there was the portal, bleh and lonely as ever. For a moment, Pelagion hesitated – did he want to go through? He didn't want to just go back, did he? Not after a paltry look at the human world? Didn't he want to see more?
But then again the portal didn't go home, it went to another city, a not-under-horrible-disaster city. That sounded like a pretty good plan to him. With a grunt of exertion, he threw the human through, and went through himself.
This was not a nice human city, this was not a good place at all. Pelagion put his hands on his cloaked hips and looked out over a highway that was very much not where he started and not where he was going.
And that was a building covered in vines. A big building. Lots of vines. Now, vines were not an uncommon part of Halloween architecture, but even the cyclopean buildings didn't make Pelagion's head hurt when he looked. That was just messed up.
“Well, lets not be here, then.” he said, picking up the human. It was probably best not to leave him.
But as he turned away, the world began to shake. “********!” he exclaimed, managing to keep his balance, “Is this an earthquake?!”
Really, human world, really? His first time and an earthquake?
But it was not an earthquake. It was a thing. A really big, really messed up thing, that looked like some kind of horse. And, oddly enough, Pelagion did not want to pet the horse.

“Oh s**t.” The color drained from Pelagion's not particularly colorful face.
We will consume you and your fear will be ours.
He gasped in pain as his head felt like it was about to split open. He had never felt anything like this before, this rending, screaming, horrible, terrible longing... Fear. Not the right kind of fear. Very bad, not good, terror kind of fear.
Upon seeing the tendrils, upon feeling their confusion and agony and terrible loss ricocheting through his body and shaking him to his core, Pelagion knew exactly where he was going and what he was doing – He picked up the human and NOPED out of there as fast as he could. He didn't want to look back and see it. He didn't want it to be chasing him.
But he knew it ********!” he cursed. What had he gotten himself into?!
Pelagion was running with the human but there was no where to run to. This highway went on forever, and Pelagion just... couldn't. The fog thickened around him, making him gasp with exertion. He needed to rest... he couldn't rest. The young illusionist didn't need to look back to know that the thing was coming, still coming, and he did not want to be caught by it... not at all... and he certainly didn't want to leave this human for the horse thing. Pel just wasn't that kind of guy.
But what could he do, fight?
Jack, no.
And then he saw it...
A moldy-a** car.
PERFECT.
He could totally hide there, and maybe with a few illusion tricks he could manage it. Maybe the horrible thing wouldn't even see them.
Pelagion opened the door and shoved the human into the backseat before getting into the passenger's seat and closing the door.
*jingle*
The reaper looked down.
Were those... keys? Pelagion stared at them for a moment, and then he had the perfect idea. It was a crazy idea, but it might just work.
He took off his coat and tossed it over the human before stretching his hands and giving his impressive hair a good shake.
To Jack with hiding.
He turned the key and felt the engine roar, a wild, terrified, exhilerated grin (or perhaps grimace) on his face.
“Yeeeeeeeee!” Pelagion shrieked as the car shot off down the highway, gripping the wheel very tightly as the not-quite-Fear-thing thundered along behind him. Had he ever done this before? No. He hadn't. But clearly he was going to start now.
The car was a beast, it's motor its heart, and Pelagion could feel it roar and buck and bound. It was a powerful feeling for the reaper as he heard, beyond the wall, the wind whoosh by... what a rush!
His rush was short lived, as a massive vine – wreathed in grasping, half-formed hands – reached for him, crying out, wanting him.
Nnnnnope.
Pelagion turned quickly, the wheels of the rickety old car shrieking as he sped away, it's metal coat screaming as the hands clawed the exterior, trying to get through... trying to get him.
“Gaaaaaah!”
He did not want to be gotten!

Pelagion could feel the creature behind him. He could hear it. He could sense it...
We will consume you. You will be ours. You cannot resist. You cannot escape...
It thundered along the long road. He could see it in the mirror, a terror of hooves and green and wrong-ness. “No you wont!” he shouted, stepping as hard as he could on the gas pedal. Something in the engine clicked, and if this wasn't a boring human engine, he could have sworn that it had become posessed... posession would have been preferable. At least then he would have been ready for the sudden intense burst of speed that the car put on.
The outside streaked into a grey blinding blur. The pressure of the car's movement, plastered his face into a desperate grimace as he just kept going ahead, trying to not steer off the road, trying to keep going...
Because he could also feel the portal, not too far away. Close enough to drive to... if the damn thing would stop following him.
Oddly, though, he felt it's presence fade away as the distance between them increased. The portal loomed, suddenly, out of the fog and he screeched to a sudden, skidding halt...

Pelagion opened the car door and got out, barely able to keep standing from shaking. He felt an interesting mixture of exhilerated, terrified, and relieved. It wasn't a bad mix, though the reaper was pretty sure it was one he wanted to feel infrequently.
He dragged the human out of the car, making sure they were wrapped up nicely in the cloak because it was cold here and it was just a nice thing to do. He lifted them over his shoulder and walked towards the portal – since he was here and feeling pretty jazzed up right now, a little trip around this other human city would be fun, wouldn't it? He was kind of looking forward to it...
…
If Pelagion listened to freaky voices in midair, he might have had a warning. If he could really have heard it as anything more than a rustle of wind, then maybe he would have known things were about to get weird.
”What are you really capable of, Shaun” crooned the shadowy voice. Pelagion ignored it, or didn't hear it. It was hard to say.
But the sleeping human did.
Suddenly, they bucked and kicked, twisting in an admirably flexible way as they hit Pelagion in the head and, suddenly, began strangling him.
“Wh...” Pelagion fought the human off, but they were strong, far stronger then they should be. He was pretty sure that their eyes were supposed to be open, and not shut, when they fought, but that was not his concern as he wrestled the human away.
What was, was the portal.
It suddenly flickered out.
“s**t.” he said, even as the human fell, limp and properly unconcious again, to the ground. He stared at where the portal had been.
