Personality: Akio is a little brat, who loves doing things that will benefit his own self. He's selfish and arrogant, and enjoys a lot of shenanigans that may or may not end in the failure of another human being. He likes to manipulate people, using the people around him to his advantage. And though he is an outright arse, he will every so often show a side of him that is more gentle or kinder. When something that he does care about shows signs of being in danger, he will fight until the end.
Bio: Akio Kawaguchi had his whole life figured out. He knew it in absolutes. He knew where he was going to work, he knew where he was going to live, he knew what he was going to do with the rest of his life, he even knew who he was going to marry. And, with everything so laid out before him, he was actually very happy.
Born and bred for the engineering lifestyle, Akio was set up for success in said field. Homeschooled since the time he could read, both his parents taught him exactly what he would need to know to fit neatly in his father’s tech company. He would do exactly what his father would be doing long down the line, creating and engineering medical robots as well as ensuring the safety of his home town: Sapporo. See, the small now village was kept safe due to the Kawaguchi family’s Baiter engineered dog, Momoko, and his grandmother Aki, a Baiter. With the aid of the medical bots, the family was actually very well known among Baiter itself, as well as the tech industry. Problem was, Katsu Kawaguchi never taught his son English while home schooling him, a poor choice that gave Akio a small drawback from the very beginning.
However, as a kid ke had a small group of friends who all loved to gather together, all of whom spoke Japanese with him to help him out. Among this small group of children was his best friend Kaede, and his soon crush Kimiko. These three hung out together constantly, and soon were more than just a group of friends. By the age of 13, Akio finally gathered the courage to ask out Kimiko. With beautiful childish flair, Akio asked her out with stuttering words and bright red cheeks, only for her to excitedly leap into his arms and never let go.
The three were then inseparable, even going into Shanghai University together. By this point, Kimiko and Akio shared an apartment near the campus, Kaede living in student housing (despide Akio offering to pay for her to have an apartment). While at the Uni, he finally was able to successfully learn English (with a great deal of trouble), and even meet a new friend. Mirai Sekai was a seamless new addition to their small group, especially after Kimiko basically saved her from the excruciating eyes of one of their more annoying teachers. Thus, the next couple years were spent bonding over karaoke, drinking together after finals, study groups, and nights of games.
Finally, when Akio was about 22, he felt like it was then important to do something that was on his heart for a long time. Propose to Kim. He had plotted with Kaede to set up the perfect date, making it just right. And finally, after months of planning, on December 1st, 3836 Akio proposed to Kimiko, and she said yes. The ring was stunning, too. He had both Kaede and Mirai help him pick one out for Kim. Mirai was Kim’s best friend by this point, and Kaede was his. It was only fitting that he would bring them along. After all, they were going to be in the wedding party.
Unfortunately, however, he only ever had the joy of fulfilling his wish of marrying his girl. They had only been engaged for seven months, in full swing of planning the big event, when they went out on one final date to celebrate Akio’s 23rd birthday. The day was planned out beautifully. They were to go out for breakfast, go explore the nearby ruins of Kunshan - a place they weren’t technically supposed to be in - have a picnic, then head back home to Sapporo to have dinner with both of their families. Sadly, they only made it to the exploration phase of the day.
Breakfast went swimmingly, of course, them sitting around their apartment with a fancy breakfast layout and warm cups of coffee. Then, about an hour after letting their stomachs settled, they headed out. It was peaceful, for the most part. The nice calm Sunday combined with the thrill of an adventure to a forbidden place made the day truly special. It was just outside of the city they lived in but it was also unprotected and dangerous. And that was where they made the gravest of errors. While the two were exploring, Akio found a pile of rubble to walk through, shouting something about looking for old parts to tinker with or show his father. The noise was loud enough to draw the attention of a straggling Daggerspine which was part of a larger group of AI being drawn out by a Baiter. The Daggerspine broke off from the group, sensing that these lone civilians would be a wonderful midday snack, going in for the attack almost immediately.
It attacked Kimiko first, taking her out almost instantly as she walked towards Akio. It slid its needle like fingers cleanly through her chest while Akio watched in horror and could do nothing. She died before his eyes and he was unable to even move. Akio was frozen in place, unable to speak or move out of absolute fear. The Daggerspine looked at him with its small glowing eyes, very clearly pleased with itself. Clearly, Akio was its next target.
Akio doesn’t remember much of what happened next. From what he was told, the Daggerspine attacked him, swiping him across the face which knocked him onto the ground, knocking him out instantly. Lucky him, the Baiter had found the stray Daggerspine and killed it before the young man was killed as well. The Baiter saved Akio’s life, but was unable to retrieve Kim’s body from the wreckage.
When he woke up, his fiance was gone and replaced by an everlasting headache and trauma. From there, Akio was sent into a downward spiral of depression, alcoholism, heroin abuse, and copious amounts of sex with random strangers. Finally, after several months of self harm and drug abuse, he finally OD’d and was sent to rehab, where he finally made the decision to become a Baiter. It was the ultimate form of wiping his slate clean. Nobody had to know what he had been through, just as he didn’t have to know what anybody else went through. It took him two long years of rehab, self harm, withdrawals, training, and pain but he finally worked up the courage to take the Half exam. Hopefully it would be as good of a decision as he thought it would be.
