Step two on the pamphlet, as he recalled, had involved hugging. Doyle peered down at the human he'd found, head tilting, and then he glanced around. Just more fog, nothing and nobody close enough to be watching. "Well, I won't tell anyone we skipped that part if you won't." She didn't move. With a loose shrug, he reached down to loop his arms under hers, lifting and beginning to drag her back the way he'd come. It was kind of slow-going, but hey, no one could say he hadn't done his part if he got this one back, right?
Strangely, he got back to the portal a lot quicker than he'd expected to. Maybe he'd exaggerated the distance in his mind? Another shrug and he put his mind to the task of shoving his charge through the portal. He stepped through after her, patting down his coat, and then froze. This was...not where he'd expected to be? The shadow man's head tilted to take in the sight of the vine-covered skyscraper, but soon enough he was flinching away. It hurt to look at.
Alarmed, he reached into a pocket, and then frantically switched to the other one when the ground began to shake. Where had he stowed the pamphlet? Clearly there was a step missing!

Doyle hastily attempted to smooth out the pamphlet, staring at it, and found nothing about portals to painful architecture on it. This wasn't making a lot of sense, and the human was still crumpled at his feet and completely no help in figuring this out, so- The shaking was getting worse, though, wasn't it? Uneasily, he turned to look for the source.
The creature was ridiculously tall, made of...vines? He couldn't tell what was holding it together or bringing it to life, couldn't even sense a bit of Fear in the thing. It looked a bit like a horse, didn't it? A giant angry abomination of a horse whose vines were reaching for him. Sure. He reached down for his human, red eyes glued to the beast.
"Alright, human, so apparently skipping steps is bad. Sorry about that, didn't have a clue. So what we're-"
We will consume you and your Fear will be ours.
Doyle double over with a groan, pained and confused. What was that thing? He nudged the brim of his hat up, pressing a hand to his forehead, and stared up at the creature as tendrils closed in. Abruptly he understood what they were, and the realization made him stagger again. Oh, no. Oh no no no, he had not signed up for this. He had to focus to return to a fully solid form when he reached for her again, but this time he scooped her up entirely.
"Back to what I was saying- What we're going to do now is run for our collective lives!"

As he ran, the creature chased. And behind them, the city seemed to explode into more vines. He couldn't afford to stare at them, or really do anything but keep running really, and then the fog was thickening again and he really couldn't afford that weakness now but- The shift settled over him as if he wasn't even wearing his pin. He adjusted to the bit of added height easily, glancing down at himself to nothing but the black of shadow. He wasn't going to complain about being in his natural form, of course, but he didn't think it boded well that the pin had failed so completely. It also didn't bode well that he'd run them to an empty stretch of highway with nowhere to hide apparently.
But wait! These were some kind of human cars, right? Shifting his grip on the woman, he hurried towards the closest one. It was a strangely shaped thing, and he didn't actually have high hopes for what it could do, but...well, beggars couldn't be choosers. Getting the human into the passenger was a hassle, and she'd probably gotten a bump on her head for all his trouble, but soon enough she was in, and he was in, and-
The moment he pressed the pedal he knew he'd made the best choice. Who knew humans made such fast cars?

With such a fast vehicle, staying ahead of the creature and its tendrils was more than easy. He could feel the new portal now, knew where he needed to go. "Just a bit longer, human, and we can tell everyone all about our exciting detour from the pamphlet guide. Assuming you ever wake up, that is." He pressed down on the pedal a bit harder, eager to get to that step that much quicker.
There it was! He slammed on the brakes, jerking to a sudden stop, and turned off the car before turning to reach in for his charge. It took a moment to get her out, but once she was, it was going to be simple enough to get-
And then there was a sound, a soft sort of gasping sound. Red eyes flickered down, and found the human staring back up at him with impossibly wide eyes. "Not again," she whispered, and while that was kind of an interesting reaction, he didn't have time to question it. She began to flail, fighting back with a strength that was frankly impressive for someone who hadn't even been conscious for the vast majority of their little adventure.
"Woah, hold on a minute, I-" She twisted and kicked away from him before he could finish, and he lost his grip. Renita crashed to the ground and tried to scramble away, but he got a hand on her arm. "Hey! We're almost to the portal!" A sharp tug brought her back another few steps, and he turned to haul her towards the portal. She fought back almost twice as hard in response. By the time the struggle ended, with her unconscious again and hopefully staying that way for a while, he turned to find the portal gone.
Being volunteered for things was less fun with every passing day, wasn't it?
