Duke shared a trait that many foals seemed to have at some point: Curiosity. It was something that helped keep the mind of the young angeni-kalona half breed captivated and occupied. It allowed him to fill his mind with a single thought and idea that needed to be checked out completely. So when he discovered an odd path several days ago while following his father and sibling around, he had logged it in his memory as a priority; something that needed to be further investigated. And only days later, seeing that his dad was preoccupied with herb gathering or some sort of medic thing that Duke did not fully understand the importance of, the small foal informed his dad that he was heading back to camp to get some rest, and feeling sly, Duke instead headed off to explore where that magical, mysterious path led. It was, from what he could tell from a quick glance, a fresh and fairly new trail that had been formed only days prior to the discovery, and now getting his first chance to slip away, he eagerly seized the opportunity and decided to check it out.
It was evening when he found the trail again. By this time it had been several hours since he departed – he could not help but think about his father and how he might be reacting by now, finally realizing that the foal was missing. Probably fretting about it. And Prometheus.. Ha, they probably are just rolling their eyes. Or maybe mad at me for not taking them along, he thought to himself. He flicked his ear, trying to ignore the guilt building up in him for not including his sibling in this little mini adventure. It was too late to turn back now, though! And there would always be next time, he reassured himself. Trotting along the path, it became increasingly more and more narrow until he could barely fit on it. He could only assume by its crudeness that it was made by some nearby kawani. Perhaps they were going to expand on it? Or that it was still being worked on? Not that it mattered too much.
The path veered off from the lands that he and his adopted family currently inhabited and into more unfamiliar territory. Not that this was an issue for Duke; young and naïve, he had confused ignorance with bravery and was happy to pursue the road into possible hostile territory. The sky started to darken, as if warning him it was time to head back, but he was fearless! He would see this to the end! And sure enough, in no time, the road ended abruptly and left him in stranded in some sort of flatland area. Instead of turning back and heading home, the foal was eager to get a look around and find some sort of rhyme or reason for the road’s end. It was like a mystery he was eager to unravel and figure out.
