Kari looked down at the human she had found. She certainly looked to be in bad shape. Judging from the bloodstains originating from her eyes and the plethora of cuts on her body, she had been through a few tussles. She also looked incredibly tired and worn from the dirt in her hair, the rips in her clothes, and the bags under her eyes. "Humans are surprisingly resilient," Kari commented in slight awe. She'd always heard people calling humans 'weak' and 'cowardly', but she didn't think that someone who was weak or cowardly would be able to take this extent of damage and continue on. Picking up the woman's arm and looping it around her neck, Kari began hauling her victim towards the portal. "Jeez... could you have been any farther away?," the reaper griped as she fought to keep her feet on the uneven terrain. Even though she complained, she would still do it. She wasn't a ghoul who would leave a job unfinished once she set her mind to something, and this situation was no different. Eventually, the pair made it to the portal. Hefting the woman onto her shoulders once more to assure her grip, Kari hoisted herself and her victim in. As she felt the tingly sensation of the portal, Kari hoped that the book had been correct about the portals being safe for human transportation. She would hate to have done all that work just to end up with a disfigured corpse. As she touched down on the other side, she looked up to find...
...an area she was not expecting.
"What is this?," the ghoul pondered in confusion. They were supposed to have been transported to a safe area! This didn't look even remotely safe! Looking back and forth, Kari gathered that she was on some long stretch of road. Next to them was a tall skyscraper covered in vines. Kari's gaze didn't linger on it for long since her head ached the more she stared, but she wasn't allowed to proceed when the ground began rattling beneath her.
Turning once more as a crash sounded behind her, she was met with the sight of a giant... horse? Something was definitely wrong with it though, if the gross bubbles riddling its skin alongside the roses and thorns adorning it were any indication. "Oh wonderful, it has grabby vines," groaned the reaper sarcastically as it began to grow clawed appendages.
Anything else she had to say was cut off by a whisper that made her rock on her feet, her head pounding in time with her heartbeat:
We will consume you and your Fear will be ours.
Wait... were the vines... other victims? Was it going to try to eat her?
"I am not becoming part of that," she said as she turned on the heels of her boots and took off as fast as she could, dragging her unconscious human with her. Luckily, the fog seemed to thin out, so she was able to muster some strength, but the question was whether it would be enough. The lethargy had been replaced with waves of nausea, making the reaper's stomach flip with every footfall.
"Any time you want to wake up and run for yourself would be wonderful!," Kari yelled to the dead weight on her shoulder.

Kari gasped and wheezed, the diseased horse still following in hot pursuit. As she ran, something caught her eye. A red, lean-looking car that was missing its roof. She remembered from her father's stories of his travels to the human world that there was a name for these things... a convertible. What it converted into, she didn't know... but she did remember one thing that her father appreciated about them: that convertibles were fast. Hefting the woman's body into the rightmost seat while taking the left, Kari started tinkering. "Come on... work... please..."As she turned a tiny knob with a keychain next to the wheel, the car revved to life. Now she was in business! She was slowly rolling forward, but she needed to go fast! It was supposed to go fast, did she need to do something else? More tinkering led to the reaper reeling back against the seat as her foot pressed down on a pedal. Latching onto the wheel, Kari was just barely able to avoid another car as she whizzed down the road. The hose was close, but Kari was beginning to outpace it now. She could do this.

A grinding noise and a thud against the back of the car sent Kari and the woman nearly a foot into the air, causing the car to momentarily lose control as the pair were jostled around like ping pong balls.

Pushing the pedal as hard as she could, Kari wanted to cry at the sight of the portal a fair distance away. Making a beeline towards it, she was a bit dismayed when the portal was too small to fit the car.
Screeching to a stop in front of it, the reaper hopped out and rounded the car to pull out the human. They were so close, Kari could almost taste it!

Before Kari could do more than hoist the limp body from the car, it began stirring, then suddenly grabbed her, throwing the reaper to the ground. The woman was awake? Why was it attacking her? Did it think it was trying to hurt her?
"Hey! You... s-stop! I... I'm... would you..! OW!"
Kari rolled across the ground along with the victim, now trying to push them away as they kicked and clawed a her.
"Stupid... I'M TRYING TO HELP YOU!," she finally roared as she reeled back and punched the woman. The blow shocked her target to the point of falling unconscious once more. The attack had halted the woman's assault, though it was too little too late. As Kari turned back to the portal while the woman sat nursing her cheek in confusion, her heart sank at the lack of a portal.
"We missed it... we're stuck," Kari groaned. She wanted to deny it, but the lack of evidence to suggest otherwise was damning.
"Our chance to escape is gone." The air grew heavy in the following silence.
