Rhys got her to a clearing first before he set her down and inspected her person first, then her pack to see if there was anything there he could use. He pocketed the radio and flashlight (which he tested and was glad to find in working condition) but left the rest, not really thinking anything else would be too useful if he ever got into a pinch. He had a headset, sure, but a radio seemed a good backup in case something happened to said headset. The flashlight would be helpful for more obvious reasons.
‹ She's out cold. What now? ›
'Thanks, miss obvious.'
‹ Answer, first. Then bite me. ›
Once again he knew she wasn't wrong, and that that was certainly the question. He still had to get her to the portal though, so the answer was about as obvious as the question.
With a quiet grunt he hoisted her over his shoulders into a fireman's carry, all the while hearing none-too-pleasant words coming from Zephira as he started the trek back toward the portal. He'd gotten pretty far, but it wasn't an impossible distance. She was light and he was used to weight-lifting anyway; it helped to think of the exercise as just like any other workout he'd ever done before.
Zephira was of no help at all because of all her chattering and the occasional warning to keep away from the shadowlings and undead. Thoughtful of her, which was rare but he was grateful all the same. Still, he did wish for her to shut up on occasion, particularly when he got winded and had to set the girl down again.
‹ Gonna give her a name? ›
'She was probably born with one.'
‹ Not what I asked. ›
Rhys glanced down at the girl, a little curious about her story despite himself, and ultimately gave a shrug. "I'll stick with calling her a civilian," he eventually said, earning him a snort from Zephira before she went quiet. He took that as his cue to get back to heading toward the portal, so he picked up his casualty again and started walking.
It didn't take too much longer for him to reach it, and when he did he carefully sent her through and and followed suit quickly after.

"Aw, what the <******** part of him expected to show up nearby some kind of a shelter where all the other hunters were rounding up knocked-out civilians and giving them the needed medical help. What they ported to was a long stretch abandoned highway, littered with abandoned cars of all makes and models. The civilian was still out cold, sprawled out on the concrete probably because of the trip through the portal. To his immediate left was a skyscraper, or what looked to be a skyscraper with some kind of vines completely wrapped around and choking it to death. The highest point he could see was shattered so he didn't imagine he was entirely wrong.
‹ Focus, meatbag. There could be another portal here. ›
'I know! Ju--'
He stopped mid-thought as the ground started to shake all around just as he peeled his attention away from the skyscraper. His eyes first turned forward, toward the highway, then behind him, which was when he saw it.
It was very obviously an it. A huge, horse-like creature it looked like. It was coming right for him, and fast. He froze for a minute, watched as vines started to unravel from it; the closer it got the less it looked like a horse…
"It is not natural for you to accept us?"
The voice brought him to his knees, eyes scrunched closed as a headache started to take him over. Images of people, thousands of them, flashing through his mind a mile a minute it felt like his head was about to explode. He felt his whole body going weak under the weight of it all--suffering in all its various form--all at once. It was blinding, and he cried out as he cradled his head in his hands.
‹ --eoffrey! Geoffrey! get up! Move it, you idiot! Run! ›
There was no way of knowing how long he'd been down, but Zephira's voice managed to get through and snap him out it. Quickly, or as quickly as he could manage, he got up and hoisted the girl over his shoulders again, then started running--no, sprinting--as far away as he could get from the thing.
At some point he summoned Zephira, who was hurling insults and swear words left and right, and slashed at the vines that came at him. If not for his parkour experience he likely would have stumbled and fallen over given all the obstacles, but he managed to dodge and slash well enough to minimize the damage done. He wasn't sure how much further he could go at this rate, though.

It was the adrenaline that likely kept him going. That and the crazy vine-horse on his tail. He didn't even care that the fog was slowly but surely getting thicker the further he ran. Nor that the skyscraper--hell, the city--was suddenly burst into vines. He didn't have time to process a "what in the hell" reaction, he just had to keep running. And run he did, as far as his legs could carry him he ran…
But the thicker the fog got the slower he moved, and at one point when he tried to slash he felt Zephira's weight in his hand suddenly vanish only to be replaced by the familiar length of leather around his neck.
'What the hell?!'
‹ It wasn't me, Geoff. ›
'Rh-- damn, just ******** it, for now. What happened?'
‹ Can't say, but I think I'm stuck like this. Just think, and fast. ›********>" he exclaimed and left it at that. Zephira went quiet as he ran through a small maze of cars, eyes darting from one to the other in hopes of finding something that might help him get the hell out of there even faster. Where better to find a means to escape than a highway full of abandoned cars, right?
It took a while but he finally found one, stupidly taking a second to admire the sleek, sexy exterior of a brand new Ferrari. He probably wouldn't get another chance to drive one--that was his excuse, okay--so he placed the civilian in the car and hopped into the driver's seat, chuckling sort of idiotically (and yes, Zephira called him on it) as he turned the ignition.

The Ferrari should have been crazy fast, the only problem was it was a stick shift and Rhys had never learned how to drive stick. He struggled to even get the car started, never mind actually getting it to go, but when he did it was still slow as all hell. That was more obvious because he was only on first gear. Switching from first to second, though, was epic fail and the engine stalled and the car froze. In the rear-view mirror he could see the horse gaining fast, and there he sat with a stalled ********, ********, ********!" he muttered as he worked on getting it started again. "They make this look so ********' easy in all those damn movies, I swear…"
It roared to life once again and this time he floored it, grinding the gears of the poor foreign sports cars but ultimately getting it to actually go, which was the goal.
‹ And here I thought you were gonna be your usual useless self, Geoff. I'm actually proud of you. ›
'Funny.'
‹ I try. Now-- ›
Her sentence cut off when he felt something slam right into the back of the car, causing him to sort of swerve a little, banging one side of the car and scratching it up something fierce against a line of other abandoned cars. How the girl he'd rescued was still asleep through this whole thing was beyond him. When he was finally in the clear again Rhys checked his mirror he saw that the horse was still gaining.
'How fast does that thing even go?!'
‹ Faster than you, clearly. ›
"Ah, bite me, Zeph!" And he floored it.

He was slowly but surely getting the hang of the manual transmission, seeing as the engine hadn't puttered and died again since the last time. Which was a relief. The thing was still giving chase but they were far enough ahead and he wasn't too worried that it'd catch up...not too worried, no. Rhy then focused on finding the portal and, much to his relief, he finally caught sight it in the distance. They'd close the gap within minutes so he started slowing down and, when they finally came up to it he hit the brakes and overshot it by a few feet.
"Damn!" he muttered.
‹ Nice work. You missed by ha-- ›
"Shut it, Zeph!" he shouted. There was no time to start another verbal exchange with his weapon, he needed to focus and her yapping never helped in that regard. She listened, thankfully; he figured she understood the gravity of their situation, though he wouldn't question it. Once they were fully stopped he got out and hoisted the girl out from the passenger seat then started booking it toward the portal with her on his back.
At least it seemed like they lost the thing, whatever it was, so his eyes were now solely on the portal now. He was actually going to make it, and with all the mishaps during the entire mission that was a miracle in and of itself.

They were nearly there when all of the sudden he felt the woman on his back start…squirming. When Rhys tried to turn his head he turned it right into an elbow, blinding him for a second and causing him to drop the girl by accident.
"Agh, damnit!" he yelled, though the sound was muffled by the hand that went to his now bleeding nose. He heard the sounds of shuffling feet and when he looked up he was watching her starting to run away. Another expletive quickly left his lips before he gave chase, easily tackling back down to the ground. She was screaming and kicking and yelling to get him off, but he wouldn't give. It helped that he was significantly bigger and bulkier than her, so he hoisted her over his shoulder again.
"I'm trying to help you!" he yelled, struggling to keep her on his shoulder.
"I didn't ask for your help!" was her retort, to which both he and Zephira huffed.
"Yeah, well you're getting it anyway. Now ju--"
"Put me down!" She started kicking and screaming so much that it made it difficult for him to walk, so he actually put her down then quickly apologized before he knocked her out again with a quick blow to the stomach. The silence that followed was incredibly welcome, and he quickly got her back into the trusty fireman's carry and headed back to the portal, right over…
"Where'd it go?" he asked aloud when he noticed that it wasn't where he'd last seen it. Rhys blinked and turned around, eyes narrowed and focused on finding that portal again. He did that for only a few seconds before he heard Zeph sigh.
‹ Oh, you have got to be joking. ›
A dull thunk was heard as Rhys kicked a nearby vehicle--the Ferrari, no less--in his frustration. He was stuck. He was screwed. At least until the found him…assuming they found him. The thought finally settled and he felt the usual anger and frustration take a vice-like grip on him. He kicked the car again, this time aiming for the side mirror and actually kicked it off of the car and sent it a few feet away. Not that it made him feel any better. He was still ******** class="spoiler-wrapper spoiler-hidden">
