No, but seriously, I think the idea was; 1 gold means one new member. Easy way to keep track.

good point but couldnt you just divide the total gold by the entry fee to find out how many members there are?

At some point, that won't work. Besides, rumour has it that it's inaccurate at times. There's always a glitch or bug or malfunction.
